I use the 50" Apollo regularly for location shooting with a studio strobe but have used it with my speedlights on occasion.

Likes:
1) Collapses like an umbrella so it travels easy and sets up super quick.

2) You can use this with any kind of light: strobes, power packs, speedlights, etc.

2) Provides great light. The price is right for what it is.

Dislikes:
1) Should come with at least a cardboard tube for storage. You'll need to find one- try a mailing store- otherwise you're going to break it if you travel with it.

2) If you use it hard (set up and tear down daily) the zippers will eventually blow. You can keep using it but I'm just sayin'. Wish it were a little more rugged but for the price I'm not complaining. If you keep it set up in your studio it will last forever.

3) There is very little ability to tilt the box up or down. 95% of the time I use it on a boom or with an assistant had holding it on a pole- both of which work fine.

NOTE: You should understand that you need to tear away the velcro front of the box to adjust the power of your light. Don't freak out. You'll get really fast at this after a while. While it is a bit of a pain that's the trade off you make to get a softbox you can use with any kind of light. (strobe, speedlight, flor, etc.)

You'll also need a cold-shoe fitting for a light stand to hold your strobe. They cost around $15.

Overall a highly versatile piece of gear for the price. Treat it gentle and work with its quirks and you'll be digging it.

The good:Creates a beautiful, soft light. Fits through the AB umbrella portion. Good feathering. Nice size. Easy to set up. Easy to tear down. The bad:For the $ this is SUPER flimsy, and doesn't come with a carrying case or even a simple drawstring storage bag (guess Westcott is being extra stingy). For the $ a bag should be included. It is not NEARLY as nice of quality as the Paul C Buff modifiers... but it was the size I needed. The "umbrella" portion (the frame of the box) of the soft box is plastic which means it isn't nearly as durable as my Paul C Buff, which is made from metal.

Produces beautiful soft light but because of the tapered pole for the umbrella it makes it hard to use at certain angles.

Comments about Westcott Recessed Mega JS Apollo (50 x 50"):

I purchased this softbox and opened it for the first time and it did seem to be flimsy. I noticed that the umbrella rod holder was made of plastic and I just didn't see it holding up long for professional use unless you have a studio and set it up and leave it up. I can't see this lasting long if you take it up and down each photo shoot. So I bought this to add to my wedding gear hoping to replace 2 separate lights. I didn't test this prior to my wedding this weekend because I thought it was just a soft box and I would adjust accordingly so no big deal. Well I had this setup on a boom with my Bolt vb-22 and positioned it above as my key light. the building had nothing but huge windows behind the alter and wedding was on bright sunny day so I did not need any additional lights  (but HSS (high speed sync) did come in handy). After I took my first shot I noticed how well I really liked the lights. I used this for all my photos except during ceremony (of course). I really love this softbox light. It is really big and gets heavy when attaching it to a boom. If you plan to use this with a boom I would recommend a high quality stand or an assistant to hold it.
Although the light is great I did have some trouble with the soft box. As I was tearing it down the box the plastic red locking knob or pin came loose and fell on floor and I had to locate it. I didn't have time to try to figure out how it went back on so I just put it in my bag and I will have to figure out later. After that happened I finally got the box to close and then the plastic cap on the top of the umbrella popped off and went rolling down the isle with everyone watching (and some even chasing after it). Once I got it back I tried to put it back on and it looks like it just screws on but the threads are plastic and will not screw back on so I put it in my bag as well and hopefully a little hot glue will keep it from happening  again.
Even though this soft box puts off some gorgeous lighting I really don't think it is going to hold up long. Westcott should quit trying to cut corners and produce quality gear that will last. AND QUIT USING PLASTIC rod holders for your top of the line products.  Yes I would recommend this to any photographer but with issues I had just on the first professional use I could not give it 5 stars. 5 STARS Yes for the results but build quality may be 3 STARS so maybe overall 4 STARS. I just hope it holds up. Time will tell..

Comments about Westcott Recessed Mega JS Apollo (50 x 50"):

I purchased one of these soft boxes a year ago. The first one was mailed to me in the product box without another layer of protection. Because this unit is essentially an umbrella and because shipping services handle packages so well, the first unit arrived wet and shaped like a banana. The umbrella was completely bent. I contacted B&H and they took it back with zero problems. But, I did have to use my time and energy to drop it off to the shipping service.

I got the credit from the return and purchased another of these units. I opened the umbrella to prepare for use only to find that one of the pressed (aluminum?) rivets was missing on one of the arms of the umbrella. The unit will not stay open without this rivet. After already dealing with one return, I decided to just make it work. I ran a small piece of wire through the hole where the rivet was supposed to be. It works now, but overall it was quite a hassle with both shipping and the lack of quality control of the unit.

An amazing softbox. Use it with one, two or three Speedlites. A great all-around light modifier to have in your toolbox.

This si great if you want a massive light source.  I used it with 2 or 3 speed lights, a C-stand, a triple flash/umbrella mount, a Paul C Buff baby boom arm is very useful if you want to be able to tilt the soft box.

Poor design can't use it even with a boom. Will not zip up completely at the bottom due to light stand. I sent it back.

I love the concept of a large portable modifier, so this was right up my alley. It is extremely easy to put up and take down, but I have to admit it's a bit of a pain to get your light set up inside the softbox.

Just used it for a 2 day on-location commercial photo shoot.
The light was soft and flattering and the pictures look amazing.
Well worth the cost, And 1 speedlight was enough for use indoors.
