Manfrotto 1004BAC Light Stands Rock!

A couple of years ago I bought four 13' Manfrotto 3078 light stands to support my Profoto Compact 600R monoblocks. I recently acquired two more Profoto Compact monoblocks - this time the 300R, and went to B&H looking for two more 3078 stands because I had such good luck with them. Being a creature of habit, I was disappointed to find that Manfrotto had discontinued the 3078 and replaced it with the 1004BAC. Under duress, I ordered two of the 1004BAC stands for my new Profoto monoblocks and boy was I blown away! They've added air cushoning to them, so the stand doesn't just collapse under the weight of the light when you loosen a collar. Also, they've come up with this amazing "fold flat" design that allows the stands to be stacked on each other, requiring a lot less apace in my light stand bag. Now for the bad news . . . I like my new 1004BAC stands so much that I want to replace my old 3078 stands even though there is nothing wrong with them!

Love these stands for portability and strength. However, the biggest reason I bought these was for the ability to lock them together. While they worked excellent for a while, the cheap plastic clips that control the main feature of locking these together are VERY weak .. they broke after very little use. I do not abuse any of my equipment. They plastic is simply cheap and not the quality I would expect from Manfrotto

This is my second of these and they're great! I love my c stands, but a lot of times they're too heavy and instead I bring these. Well built and sturdy, and I love that they click together for transport. If I had anything bad to say it's just that they have a large footprint when set up, but it's never been a big problem.

I recently purchased two stands and reviewing the comments other people had written. I already had a Manfrotto tripod and have always been impressed by the quality of the product. Again I was not disappointed with the Air-Cushion stands easy to operate.

Comments about Manfrotto Alu Master Air-Cushioned Stand (Black, 12'):

I debated c-stands or these, and I chose these because they are a little lighter and for their stacking ability.  I don't have a lot of help and do mostly location work so this fits for me well.  To big to use when roving around, but when I set up in a church or something they work great.   I only use two, but they lock together and are pretty easy to carry.  They're beefy and a little heavy, though not as much as c-stands.

They clip together, super sturdy, and have adapters built-in

Comments about Manfrotto Alu Master Air-Cushioned Stand (Black, 12'):

Super sturdy, fold flat, link together solidly, have 1/4" and 3/8" adapters, and air cushion prevents damaged lights. If they were a bit lighter, they would be even more perfect. As-is they are just perfect.

Awesome quality and very sturdy. You pay for it, but when they last a lifetime who cares. I have hand me down Bogen stands (Long Before Manfrotto) that are older than me and they get used every day.

Great stand for location shoots

Comments about Manfrotto Alu Master Air-Cushioned Stand (Black, 12'):

Bought these to hold Profoto heads on location as I was toting around heavy duty C-stands that weigh 3 times what these do. The trade off is the C-stands don't budge and feel much more sturdy as they should given the weight. However, these have a decent footprint for good stability and are relatively solid given their light weight. I'd prefer to have a super clamp with a j-hook on it attached to the stand with the generator hooked on or alternatively a sand bag as these feel top-heavy to me when fully extended. My sandbags have a clip on them so I can easily attach it to the super clamp. Sandbags layed across the feet would likely slide off and not stay put. The build quality for the price is very good, the knobs work very well and are secure. The stand folds up very compact and the interlocking/stacking system is genius. Should be able to attach 4-5 of these and still be very manageable. The extra height is good to have as it's very little more money over the 9' stands, but depending on what you're mounting, I'd be careful when fully extended.

Very Nice! Lightweight, yet sturdy. I haven't had it long yet, but I can tell the knobs won't be wearing down any time soon. I also like the fact that it folds flat. I will probably end up buying a couple more at some point so that I can utilize the stacking mechanism.

Great product, but rattles in transit

Comments about Manfrotto Alu Master Air-Cushioned Stand (Black, 12'):

I wanted to get some sturdier light stands, and I know that Manfrotto is going to deliver! These stands are nice, heavier and solid than my others. And I really like how they snap together so you can stack them in transit. The only reason for 4 stars instead of 5 is that they clank around and rattle in the car like crazy when I'm driving with them. I tried wrapping a tether around them, but they still clank. If I position them vertically in the car, it seems to help a bit.

I like this stand for the following reasons: 1) it has a wide base and is stable; 2) it is solidly built; and 3) I like how it folds flat for easier storage and transportation
