I needed an excellent headphone for tracking in my home studio. I sought recommendations from highly regarded industry professionals and read several online reviews from reputable sources. Based on the information, I decided to purchase the Sennheiser HD 380 Pro.

Firstly, the built quality of this headphone is 'pro-grade'. It is flexible yet extremely durably. This was built to withstand the rigors of the professional music environment. It is also easy to transport in the included travel case.

Secondly, the design of the HD 380 Pro fits my head comfortably. It does not squeeze and can be worn for extended periods without discomfort.

Most importantly, the frequency response of this headphone exceeds the Human-Audible-Spectrum. I am able to hear the distinction among the low, mid and high frequency sounds very well. Though I will not recommend these for mixing, I use them for monitoring effects placement in a mix and when correcting noise, sibilance, and distortion in a signal.

I have an HD650 and an Audio Technia ATH-M50 at home. The former is set up with a DAC and a headphone amp for music listening, the latter is used with a mix station, set up as a backup for nearfields, when I have to work late at night, or when my wife complains.
Now my day job has become so stressful that I need music beyond normal dose of caffeine. At first I brought the HD650. Bad idea, it broadcast so loudly that the whole floor turned against me. My boss ordered that I need to "keep music to myself." The ATH-M50 came in next. It made peace with my coworkers, sounded nice with the bonus of ambient isolation, yet I need to take it off once in a while to relax my sweaty ears.
This is when HD380pro caught my attention. On the surface it's very promising for my case. Closed back should "keep music to myself," Over-the-ear design, similar to HD650, is proven to be more comfortable for extended listening. As added bonus it folds into a flatter case, making it easier to fit into a briefcase. It's priced above ATH-M50 so the sound should be OK - It's a Sennheiser, isn't it?
I bought it and, surprise, it sounded horrible! Granted any comparison with HD650 would be unfair. Against ATH-M50, however, it simply sounded like ear-buds. Mids were so over emphasized that highs were barely audible. I put the unit under a 48-hour break-in, at the same time researched on the web. Other ATH-M50 owners also observed the same, but most put it positively. They said ATH-M50's highs were overkill, HD380pro made it right, and ATH-M50's mids sucked (which I concur comparing with HD650), and HD380pro made female vocal shine...Could break-in do the trick?
Two days later it definitely sounded better. Mids settled a bit and highs came out. If I turned up the volume it actually sounded OK. But under a volume that I felt safe for longevity of my ears ATH-M50 was still a clear winner. What volume could not compensate, was an echo in the 800-1000Hz range, which makes vocals sound like from a tin can.
Am I doing justice to such a highly reviewed product? If my use case is unique, what could it be best for? I suspect it would really work well for DJs. At high volume highs and lows are both boosted and it should sound fabulous. Effect of the echo could also get relief as ambient echoes leak in anyway.
Now for the stars. I knock off one for not fitting my use case of extended listening, and the other for value. It's priced 40% more than the ATH-M50 yet it does not deliver much more IMHO. It's more comfortable and portable, but short on the most important aspect - sound. I understand this could be subjective and I hope people who like its sound don't take offense.
Last but not least. I will always buy from B&H. I have used almost every online shop with a name. No other online retailer comes close to the service they provide. Wish I could visit NY somedays to thank these nice guys in person.

Great sound and comfort

Comments about Sennheiser HD 380 Pro Circumaural Monitoring Headphones:

I use these headphones in my home studio. The sound is flat and clean, nice balance overall, not too bass heavy, not too shrill on the highs and mid frequencies. They are very comfortable and do a nice job at isolating sound. The only downside I can think of is the cable is hardwired on the left hand side which for me is a bit of a pain as the audio source is on my right.

As a drummer and sound engineer I use phones a lot and these work great overall. The comfort level is not as good as the 280 pro. Sound isolation is very good and volume is slightly better than other phones I have used.

Comments about Sennheiser HD 380 Pro Circumaural Monitoring Headphones:

I use these for video production and they fit snuggly on my head. I'd say they cancel 60%-70% of outside noise, which is a lot more than Sony headphones. You can also remove the audio cable in case you bend or pinch it.

Comments about Sennheiser HD 380 Pro Circumaural Monitoring Headphones:

I purchased these headphones to quietly practice bass guitar. I wanted a set that would hold up under the low end frequencies and did not want to spend $300+. So far so good, but time will tell. For replay of recorded music, the sound is very neutral, like studio-grade headphones. Construction quality is good and you can buy replacement cords and ear pads when they wear out. They also fold nicely and come in a hardshell bag that is great for traveling. A little uncomfortable to wear for several hours though. Overall a great compromise between cheap, throw-away over-the-ear headphones and the more expensive $300 variety.

I'm using them mostly while playing guitar (plugged into my amp). I've also used them for recreational listening, and they work fine for that as well. They are fairly comfortable, though extended use can make your ears a bit sore for a few minutes or so.

Terribly uncomfortable headset, but great sound. My big ears fit into the oval cup, but the pressure against my temple is horrible. I called up Sennheiser and they told me to spread them apart and they would get better in time...what's that all about. I see $ headset that look more comfortable. The build is high density plastic throughout as far as I can tell, and something like these headsets would have cost $ years ago and be considered junk. I run the HD 380 through a Xenyx 502 mixer, which cost about $, and they make one great headphone amp. So the sound is superb for the price, but that is the only plus. My HD 100's sound just as good on an iPad as the HD 380 does un-amplified. The case is nice, but who needs a case for these behemoths.
