This product works period. My workflow was slow and tedious, having to manual color correct everything because the preset white balance straight from camera never gave me what I felt was perfect white balance. Creating custom color profiles for your camera/lens/strobes are easy.

For flash photography follow the below instructions.

1) Set your cameras white balance to "flash" or daylight if your camera doesn't have an option for flash.

2) Double check your settings to verify you are shooting in RAW file format.

2) Set up your lights in which every style you would like. If you're using 1 light or 10 lights, set up like you normally would.

3) Properly expose for your subject. I personally use a Sekonic light meter for this, but you can take a few test frames and chimp to verify you have proper exposure.

4) Open the X-Rite so it makes a "T" shape, and have the model hold it on the plastic back and date card. DO NOT TOUCH ANY OF THE COLOR SQUARES, OR GREY CARD.

5) Have your subject hold the card on the key light side of their face, this is the closest to the main light source. Make sure it is oriented the correct way with the little icons of the sun and mountain on the upper portion.

6) Be sure the subject holds the X-Rite parallel to the camera.

7) When framing, the X-Right should fill 50% - 75% of the frame. Tip: Don't worry if part of your subjects head or face is cut off, we are trying to capture the X-Rite, not the subject.

8) Take the shot, doubling check to verify the exposure and framing are good. Then have the subject set down the X-Rite and continue on with your shoot as usual.

POST PRODUCTION PROCESS
------------------------

1) Import your photos into Lightroom

2) Bring up the photo with the X-Rite in the develop tab.

3) Go to File and select Export.

4) Under the left side of the window below the title that says "Presets" select X-Rite Presets, then select "ColorChecker Passport".

5)Give your custom profile DNG a name, make sure to include subject name, camera body used, lens used, and type of light IE: flash, sunlight, shade.

6)Select "Export". Lightroom and X-Rite will find the color checker passport to create a custom profile. When it is finished you MUST restart Lightroom.

7) After you've restarted Lightroom, Bring up the photo of the X-Rite in the Develop tab again. Then scroll through the setting options on the right hand side until you see "Camera Calibration".

Under Camera Calibration, select the drop down arrows next to where it says profile. You will find your newly created color profile at the bottom of this list. Select it and watch as the colors magically shift and come to life.

8) Now to correct white balance take the white balance eye dropper tool towards the top and select the row squares towards the top of the X-Rite that have the picture of the little sun and person to the left and right. The one to the left is "neutral" and get warmer as you select squares to the right.

Pro Tip: Having a properly calibrated monitor will help with adjusting other settings like "black" , "whites" , "contrast" , etc. It also allows you to view the photo in proper color so you're not fooled into thinking the colors are not where they should be and adjusting for that only to find they look different in your prints.

I would highly recommend this product to anyone wanting to create consistent photos, from the first to last shot. If you want dead on accurate colors this product is for you. It's hard to think I went this long with out it!!

One word of cation, The X-Rite is a little stiff to open, I sure it was designed this way to keep it open, but can be little difficult at first. All in all, this one product that is worth every dollar.

The color checker passport concept is good but the software needs to be upgraded to work with a high mega-pix camera such as the Canon 5DS/R.

I got this kit to build my own color profiles for my Canon 5DSR. At first I was caught out by the faulty software which cannot handle a 5DSR RAW file and just gave me error messages.

Fortunately I found a work-around on the internet suggesting only to shoot MRAW-files (a compressed RAW-file format) and using the smaller files to build my custom color profiles for Adobe Lightroom.

The color profiles I have built are much, much better than what you get using Adobe Lightroom. This is especially true for the 5DS/R were Adobe has made a very poor job of their color profile.

Buying X-rite is however, something I do not recommended before X-rite fixes the problem with their software.

I also find it strange that X-rite does not mention the limits of their software anywhere. When I contacted support they answered that they were working on a solution, but this is not mentioned anywhere on their site - also not under the "known issues" faq.

I Was Scheptical But Now I Love It

Comments about X-Rite ColorChecker Passport Photo:

Calibrating my monitor was one of those things that I knew were important but I always procrastinated doing. After getting a new 4K monitor in which the color didn't match my old 32" Dell monitor I was in desperate need of put the color issue to rest once for all. I also have always wanted to try using the color passport. I was expecting to get better color accuracy and correct color balance. I tested yesterday during a sledding session my my kids and I was immediately sold. Not only the white balance was perfect, but my images were taken to a whole new level after correcting the RAW files with the ColorChecker Passport. Everything seems more vibrant, and alive. It is like I took my pictures with a very expensive medium format Hasselblad. I highly recommend calibrating your monitor and using the Color Checker passport.

Smaller than I expected, which is a good thing I guess. My only complaint is cost and the fact that the thing is really hard to open/close.

Comments about X-Rite ColorChecker Passport Photo:

While expensive for just color balance adjustments (although it works very well for that purpose), the real advantage is that using it with the accompanying software provides for the creation of custom color gamut profiles for each of my lens/camera combinations under a variety of lighting conditions.

Great for reducing your post processing on RAW image capture

Comments about X-Rite ColorChecker Passport Photo:

Great time saver in post processing. I'll take a shot of this right before/after a shoot. When you import to Lightroom you can adjust white balance, exposure and other settings in the develop module and then apply these to the rest of the imported shots. saves time for any common corrections and allows you to then make shot specific edits for each photo if needed to fine tune the photo.

Comments about X-Rite ColorChecker Passport Photo:

My first use was a shopping trip for a new oriental rug. I took pictures of the rugs my wife was interested in and set the ColorChecker on the rugs when I took the picture. No matter the lighting in the stores, the color was corrected perfectly in post production.
I then used it on some grandchildren photography and cannot believe how this tool helps in color correction.
I will not go anywhere without this great tool.

Seems to be a good product

Comments about X-Rite ColorChecker Passport Photo:

This item seems to be an awesome product except for the software end. It is a little clunky and I had to contact support right after the first use. They were quick to help but it should have been something mentioned on the web site. The software had trouble updating and there was no way to find an answer for the issue. Finally the contact person sent me the updated software but it only took care of half the problem. This is a sturdy piece of equipment that should help keeping colors close to the originals after calibrating everything. I'm hopeful I will see good results!

Great Fuji X tool for RAW processing

By Dennis

Comments about X-Rite ColorChecker Passport Photo:

The color checker is instrumental in my work flow. I am a Fuji X Trans photographer. It is well known that Lightroom does not handle the Fuji RAW file perfectly. I am using the color checker with the RAW files to create custom LR presets.

I also use the White Balance scale to custom set skin tones.
