This product works period. My workflow was slow and tedious, having to manual color correct everything because the preset white balance straight from camera never gave me what I felt was perfect white balance. Creating custom color profiles for your camera/lens/strobes are easy.

For flash photography follow the below instructions.

1) Set your cameras white balance to "flash" or daylight if your camera doesn't have an option for flash.

2) Double check your settings to verify you are shooting in RAW file format.

2) Set up your lights in which every style you would like. If you're using 1 light or 10 lights, set up like you normally would.

3) Properly expose for your subject. I personally use a Sekonic light meter for this, but you can take a few test frames and chimp to verify you have proper exposure.

4) Open the X-Rite so it makes a "T" shape, and have the model hold it on the plastic back and date card. DO NOT TOUCH ANY OF THE COLOR SQUARES, OR GREY CARD.

5) Have your subject hold the card on the key light side of their face, this is the closest to the main light source. Make sure it is oriented the correct way with the little icons of the sun and mountain on the upper portion.

6) Be sure the subject holds the X-Rite parallel to the camera.

7) When framing, the X-Right should fill 50% - 75% of the frame. Tip: Don't worry if part of your subjects head or face is cut off, we are trying to capture the X-Rite, not the subject.

8) Take the shot, doubling check to verify the exposure and framing are good. Then have the subject set down the X-Rite and continue on with your shoot as usual.

POST PRODUCTION PROCESS
------------------------

1) Import your photos into Lightroom

2) Bring up the photo with the X-Rite in the develop tab.

3) Go to File and select Export.

4) Under the left side of the window below the title that says "Presets" select X-Rite Presets, then select "ColorChecker Passport".

5)Give your custom profile DNG a name, make sure to include subject name, camera body used, lens used, and type of light IE: flash, sunlight, shade.

6)Select "Export". Lightroom and X-Rite will find the color checker passport to create a custom profile. When it is finished you MUST restart Lightroom.

7) After you've restarted Lightroom, Bring up the photo of the X-Rite in the Develop tab again. Then scroll through the setting options on the right hand side until you see "Camera Calibration".

Under Camera Calibration, select the drop down arrows next to where it says profile. You will find your newly created color profile at the bottom of this list. Select it and watch as the colors magically shift and come to life.

8) Now to correct white balance take the white balance eye dropper tool towards the top and select the row squares towards the top of the X-Rite that have the picture of the little sun and person to the left and right. The one to the left is "neutral" and get warmer as you select squares to the right.

Pro Tip: Having a properly calibrated monitor will help with adjusting other settings like "black" , "whites" , "contrast" , etc. It also allows you to view the photo in proper color so you're not fooled into thinking the colors are not where they should be and adjusting for that only to find they look different in your prints.

I would highly recommend this product to anyone wanting to create consistent photos, from the first to last shot. If you want dead on accurate colors this product is for you. It's hard to think I went this long with out it!!

One word of cation, The X-Rite is a little stiff to open, I sure it was designed this way to keep it open, but can be little difficult at first. All in all, this one product that is worth every dollar.

The color checker passport concept is good but the software needs to be upgraded to work with a high mega-pix camera such as the Canon 5DS/R.

I got this kit to build my own color profiles for my Canon 5DSR. At first I was caught out by the faulty software which cannot handle a 5DSR RAW file and just gave me error messages.

Fortunately I found a work-around on the internet suggesting only to shoot MRAW-files (a compressed RAW-file format) and using the smaller files to build my custom color profiles for Adobe Lightroom.

The color profiles I have built are much, much better than what you get using Adobe Lightroom. This is especially true for the 5DS/R were Adobe has made a very poor job of their color profile.

Buying X-rite is however, something I do not recommended before X-rite fixes the problem with their software.

I also find it strange that X-rite does not mention the limits of their software anywhere. When I contacted support they answered that they were working on a solution, but this is not mentioned anywhere on their site - also not under the "known issues" faq.

Does exactly what it claims, but with caveats.

Comments about X-Rite ColorChecker Passport Photo:

The software to generate color profiles works only with Adobe products - Adobe Camera Raw, etc. Fine if you use these in your primary workflow, but not if Capture One or some others are your preferred approach. So, useful for critical color balancing but may require deviating from you normal workflow. Check on the type of profile you need before jumping in.

Should Have Purchased This Years Ago!!!

Comments about X-Rite ColorChecker Passport Photo:

I have coveted the ColorChecker Passport for years, but for whatever reason never pulled the trigger. I wish I had purchased it long ago. Some of my commercial work involves product photography, and I have struggled to get the color (especially reds) perfect on a white background. With the ColorChecker I take one reference photo and boom, it was perfect. This is a must-have for all types of photography.

I shoot a lot of families on the beach and fine art. I don't shoot anywhere without my Color Checker Passport. The plug in works very well with Lightroom and Photoshop. I create profiles with every lighting situation.

Convenient and helpful with only a few minor gripes.

By Stowaway

Comments about X-Rite ColorChecker Passport Photo:

Color can be tough and when it really matters it's good to have something to serve as a benchmark. The Colorchecker Passport offers a nice set of color swatches in a very portable case that, when used in combination with the included software, provides a great way to color calibrate your captures. The swatches can be used to determine just a white balance or be used to generate an ICC profile for your camera. It does take some experimentation to get good results and the software, two stand-alone applications and a Lightroom plug in, could be a bit more "integrated" in my opinion. The case itself is nice and compact but is a little clunky to open, to the point you feel you may break it. All in all it's a good system though and, coupled with a well calibrated monitor, helps take some of the guess-work out of maintaining consistent color.

Won't let me create color profiles. It tells me I'm not using a supported illuminant. I've tried artificial light and sunlight. If it doesn't fit in those categories, then what does.

Comments about X-Rite ColorChecker Passport Photo:

Excellent product. ColourChecker Passport Photo has saved me a lot of time in post, by setting up color profiles. Perfect color reproduction, no variations as I have experienced with gray cards. Durable, and the clamshell-style case is an indispensable feature, especially on location to protect the colors from weather damage or getting dirtied by hands.

Do you think your colors and WB are spot on? I did too... I was very wrong. perfect color every time no matter what you shoot, where you shoot, or how you shoot. With the CC you have decided to take your skills to the next level ...

The better question to ask is... Can you afford NOT to purchase one.

Comments about X-Rite ColorChecker Passport Photo:

I didn't want to purchase the passport video because it was almost double the price and I use it primarily for video. This thing works equally as well and rocks! Works amazing when shooting log and need a quick and accurate color. Throw the footage into resolve, grab your chip chart tool, and boom accurate corrected color.

Pros

Cons

    Best Uses

Comments about X-Rite ColorChecker Passport Photo:

I was using a grey card in my workflow, which is easy to carry around in a billfold and cheap to replace, but you do get some slight variation in color temperature if you buy the cheap stuff. The only way to get your colors just right is high-quality X-Rite perfectly color calibrated products, which are durable and portable. Maybe not stick-it-in-your-wallet portable, but about the same as an Otterbox phone case, or a Pelican SD card holder. You pay a premium for good, durable stuff and it's definitely worth it.

Comments about X-Rite ColorChecker Passport Photo:

The changes can be small but but if your serious about getting the color right and cutting down on post processing time this may be something you may want to check into but you must be shooting RAW so if your not you do not need this.
To get best results you do need to calibrate your entire work flow this is just one part of the entire process monitor should also be done with something like the X-Rite ColorMunki.
Sekonic light meter can be calibrated to match the camera sensors dynamic range making the entire system match.
