Maybe we were being naive to think it would distort less, but we were disappointed in the lens and returned it and used the credit to buy other gear instead. We felt we would not use it because of our disappointment and would be better suited renting a quality wide if the need ever arised. For now, our 24mm will do for wides.

Comments about Zeiss Distagon T* 18mm f/3.5 ZE Wide Angle Lens Canon EF Mounts:

Very happy with this lens, build quality is superb. The 18mm is just the right width for images not to feel unrealistically distorted yet capture a wide angle of view. This being a fixed manual focus lens, it is best used with a tripod, perfect for wide-angle landscape shots.

Comments about Zeiss Distagon T* 18mm f/3.5 ZE Wide Angle Lens Canon EF Mounts:

I use this lens mostly for 4K video on an Sony A7S II with a Photodiox converter.

Can't give it praise enough, love the result this is giving me.

Build quality is stellar. All metal and it feels like it would outlast me and then a lifetime. The focus ring is smooth and well damped with just the right amount of resistance (at least to me). Quality thru and thru, but then it should be that given the price.
A bit heavy but then that goes with the way it's constructed and built. Metal and a lot of glass is never going to be lightweight.

Image quality is superb. Perhaps not as sharp in the corners as some other Zeiss lenses when wide open but that doesn't really matter when everything else is so good. Contrast is outstanding and the colors are sublime. The colors are what I love the most about this lens, images and footage really pop and stand out and looks alive.

Focusing is, if not a breeze, manageable. Being so wide there is a considerable DOF giving a bit of room for errors making shooting handheld video more than possible. For photos the focus magnification in the A7 makes focusing easy.

I just have two niggles. First, infinity focus i not aligned to the end stop of the focus ring (and the engraved scale). It focus slightly beyond infinity. Not really a problem but something to be aware of. Could be the combination of lens, converter and camera. At least it errs on the right side.
Second, even though the aperture is read and set from the A7 (with the Photodiox converter), and that you can use shutter priority in the camera, the exposure and aperture is not dynamically updated when shooting video. You get the exposure from the beginning, but if light changes during the shot the aperture will not follow. You could of course use aperture priority mode but then the shutter speed would change over time not being acceptable for video. If you shoot manual you can change the aperture but only in-camera since there is not aperture ring on the Canon version.
Not a problem for me but something that perhaps can be a deal-breaker for others.

I bought this lens for my son but before I gave it to him, I took it out and tried it out on my camera. Most of my lens are auto focusing so this manual lens was a challenge for me. However, I really didn't have any trouble getting to focus and the pictures I took with it were sharp and clear. It wasn't difficult to use at all. I would recommend this lens to others. Ellen P.

I strongly recommend purchase of this lens.

Comments about Zeiss Distagon T* 18mm f/3.5 ZE Wide Angle Lens Canon EF Mounts:

I bought this lens because I needed a great wide lens for video and I had the 17-40mmL from Canon, which wasn't good enough for me.

I bought it right away because I own the 35mm f1.4 and the 50mm f1.4 from Carl Zeiss and those are the best lenses I've ever had.

The "Zeiss" quality was kept as I thought and I would recommend this lens to anyone who needs the best image quality in their videos. The best colors, sharpness and bokeh I've ever tried. (I own 3 Canon L lenses and 3 Sigma EX as my reference)

For photo is great too, easier to focus than all the other Zeisses that I have, due to it's wideness. You just have to get used to manual focusing (I find it interesting and challenging)

The construction of this lens is fantastic, and it feels like what a good lens should... well made. It's a slight step above the nice Canon zooms in terms of sharpness and chromatic aberration.. and definitely sharper in the corners when shooting it around f/5.6 or f/8

Comments about Zeiss Distagon T* 18mm f/3.5 ZE Wide Angle Lens Canon EF Mounts:

The Zeiss 18mm is the latest lens in my Zeiss ZE inventory and rounds out, at the wide end, the 50, 35 and 25 I have. I shoot video with a Sony FS100 digital cinema camera, which has an S35 size sensor. The 18mm has an effective crop of a 27mm lens on a full frame still camera. In a perfect world I'd have the 15mm, but the price of that admittedly excellent lens is a bit high for my needs today.

The 18 mm is, like all the Zeiss ZE lenses, heavy, solid and built to perfection. Since the front thread is 82mm, I'm going to have to invest in more ND filters. I had standardized on 77mm filters with stepup rings on all the lenses.

There's nothing to criticize about these lenses. For movie making it would be nice if they had the manual aperture ring like the ZF lenses, but the Metabones EF adapter makes my FS100 think it's a Canon mount camera. Since the camera is so fast with a native ISO of 500, the F3.5 is no problem. In fact, I often have to use ND filters for indoor shooting to allow me to use wider apertures when I want to.

If you can't afford the Zeiss CP.2 cine lenses, these still camera lenses are a great second best. I have heard that the CP lenses are the same as these still camera lenses but in a cine style housing with all manual aperture rings, no click stops, minimal breathing and a common size filter thread. But that's heresy so I can't vouch for the truth.

The really picky cinematographers who have used these lenses often say they're sharper and have a more neutral color rendering than the Canon L lenses. I have two Canon L zooms (24-105 and 70-200) and of course the Zeiss are cleaner and sharper. However, it's not fair to compare them with zooms. Their build quality, I believe, is significantly better than Canon's. There's no plastic in these lenses, and the manual focus rings feel like focus rings should feel. Some of the L lenses feel like the focus would shift in a strong breeze, because they're designed for electronic connection rather than for manual focus.

My next Zeiss ZE purchase will be either the 85 or the 100 macro. I'm leaning toward the 85 as the more useful of the two for my specific purposes.

Comments about Zeiss Distagon T* 18mm f/3.5 ZE Wide Angle Lens Canon EF Mounts:

The one thing I noticed most is that this lens offers light contrast and more organic sharpness, more akin to a cinema than DSLR lens. While it isn't super sharp it does push a nice contrast gradient into your images. Lens flares are great if you want them but well controlled. The only thing I really dislike is CA, but that is most easily fixed in post. Get up close to your subjects and this lens shines!

I specialize in Real Estate and Architectural Photography. This lens is incredibly sharp, corner to corner. Color/contrast is definitely an improvement over Canon L Series Lenses. ( I have 9, including a 14 mm F2.8L) Manual focus on this lens is actually quicker to achieve than the auto on the 14mm, especially in low light.

I use DxO Optics Pro, not Photoshop, to edit images. Any barrel/pincushion distortion, vignetting is automatically dealt with. I have not had any issues with Chromatic aberration yet but I'll be giving the lens a good workout on this very shortly!
I would recommend using Zeiss filters with all Zeiss lenses. I normally use B+W (fabulous!) on all my Canon lenses but the end results just don't feel/look right on the Zeiss lens. This comment is purely subjective.

Comments about Zeiss Distagon T* 18mm f/3.5 ZE Wide Angle Lens Canon EF Mounts:

I have EF 17-40 F/4, 16-35 F/2.8 and am getting more and more fussy about image quality. From my research, the Carl Zeiss 21mm has the best reputation, but so much of my landscape shooting is done at the UWA, so I opted for the 18mm.
Having compared the CZ 18mm f/3.5 and the Canon 16-35 @ 18mm* for the past 2 weeks, I am of the mind that the Canon lens holds up well for corner to corner sharpness and distortion.
Given the zoom, that, in my opinion, makes the Canon lens more versitile. An obvious comment, but an important one when looking at shelling out good money.
The saving grace for the Carl Zeiss lens, I am finding the colour and contrast a touch more pleasing than the EF 16-35mm f/2.8.

This Lens is super sharp. I love it. It's also very contrasty. It takes some getting used to. It's a tough lens to use in harsh light or dim light because the Highlights go and the Blacks are blocked up but it makes you really pay attention to the light. If you can simplify the light or shoot in non contrasty situations this bad boy shines. Amazing lens.

I use this lens with a Canon 7d recently and was able to capture sharp landscape photos. It feels solid. The lens hood is metal and not plastic which enhances its durability. This Zeiss lens was my first...but it may not be my last.

Comments about Zeiss Distagon T* 18mm f/3.5 ZE Wide Angle Lens Canon EF Mounts:

On my 7D the effective focal length is just shy of 29mm and on my better half's 10s film camera it will capture the grand panoramas she appreciates. I wanted something easy to carry - compact and discreet - while providing the ability to capture the entire group and scene at various family events (close quarters indoors and outdoor cookouts). I have captured nice colorful pictures indoors and out with this lens and quality edge to edge is very satisfying even cropped.

This fills my wide angle portfolio-gap and now I will no longer whine about my 24-70 mounted on the film camera. I really liked the reviews on the Zeiss 21mm but their 18mm is appreciably shorter (one inch) and wider by an effective 9 or 10mm focal length compared to the wide end of my 24-70mm lens.

I've read reviews that show a fairly decent comparison between this lens and the Canon 14mm T/S. For some reason the tilt shift does a better job of controlling chromatic aberration. However, other than that, which is an issue I fix in photoshop, this lens is fantastic. It's the widest I would go while shooting video, you're on the very boundary of getting a spherical shift that takes the audience out of the moment, it's got a 99 degree field of view.

HDR looks great with this wide panoramic perspective, it's a beautiful lens.
