4.0

Incredibly sharp, with some CA at wide apertures.

By Robert

This lens simply produces sharper images than any other lens I've used at this price range. It also focuses very quickly, and has the feature common to Pentax lenses where you can manually change focus even when the camera is set to AF. The lens is very light too, and the weather resistance is a big plus. There are just two small problems.

First, there is some purple fringing at or below f/4.5 on very high contrast shots, e.g. a bird against the sky. This disappears above f/4.5, and is very hard to notice when the background is not the sky or some other bright light source. For instance, the CA is just barely visible in bright daylight f/2.8 shots of pigeons with black and white feathers -- at the border between black and white feathers is the smallest bit of purple fringing, but you can't notice unless you really zoom in (on my Pentax K3 ii).

The other issue, even more minor, is that the included lens hood doesn't have a slot to control a polarizing filter. The hood is solid all the way around so you can't use it with a polarizing filter.

Overall though, fantastic lens.

Tack sharp; Best Value for a 100mm macro APS-C or FF

By Michael

Pro-quality, weather resistant macro lens that's great for APS-C or full frame. It's a 150mm macro on my K-3 and 100mm on my K-1. Light weight; great for hiking. Lowest priced of all brands. This lens cannot be beat.

Great for photographing insects

By kenneth

from Undisclosed

I am having a lot of fun with this lens. Using it with a K3, I am able to get decent photos of insects in the field under challenging conditions - wind, fast moving insects, and low light (I do use a light ring). Because of the quality of this lens, and the resolution/image stabilization of the K3, I am able to get decent handheld photos of tiny planthoppers and aphids. The depth of field issue when shooting at short focal distances causes focus problems, of course. Although I do not use focus stacking software, layering selected in -focus components of a subject shot in burst mode is my low tech means to correct out of focus areas. For me, using this lens in the field involves a lot of trial and error, plenty of missed and unusable shots, and luck due to movement of the subject and the surface the subject is sitting, or crawling, on. When things do line up enabling the auto focus and image stabilization to do their thing, the effort is worth it. I can't say that I have had more fun with my camera than when using this lens.

Great glass

While I love macro photography, I bought this primarily for portraiture. I'm very pleased! It's a beautiful lens and is very sharp. Yes, the auto-focus motor is loud; but in situations where the noise would become an issue, I just pop it on manual focus. I'm very happy with this purchase!

Great lens for the money!

I bought this lens for my Pentax K-3. I'm a professional photographer and wanted the best macro I could buy for it. I didn't give the lens 5 stars because it hunts more than any other macro lens I've owned and it's by far the noisiest one I've owned by any maker. I would rate it 4.5 for sharpness. The build quality is super, it's weather proof and has a great lens hood as well! I've only had the lens for a couple of weeks so I can't post a lot of pics. I've attached some test shots of flowers in my yard. I would give this lens my recommendation. Make sure you buy a high quality UV filter for it, don't skimp. B&H is the best camera store around, buy with confidence.

Excellent Sharpness and Clarity

By Imagination4

After spending the time to test and adjust the fine auto focus on my K-3, this lens delivers excellent sharpness and image quality from nearly wide open. Focusing is relative fast, but noisy as it is screw drive, though accurate.

Beautiful lens of compact size!

By zreminder

I have been longing for such lens for so long based on the fantastic reviews I read online. It is a true performer with solid build-quality. This lens produce extraordinarily sharp images. Color aberration is barely noticeable except at F/2.8. If there is one thing I want to complain about, that would be the lack of focus range limiter. Since it is a macro lens, focusing can take long time from min-focus range to infinity. A limiter would have made it better for auto focus.

Great macro, slight hunting

By dg

from Irvine, CA

Verified Buyer

Spent just a little time with this gem but it's really a great macro. Quick-shift focus system works well, very long focus throw of course as a macro. Haven't seen it in my other lenses but I found that this one sometimes tries to hunt in the wrong direction on my k3-ii, might just be that it's _so_ out of focus there is no information to be had -- this is my first autofocus macro lens so I can't compare.
