I have never been a big fan of zoom lenses until I purchased this lens. In the last few years I have shot Canon L primes almost exclusively on full frame bodies (mainly the 35L, 50L, 85L, and the 135L) loved the results but sometimes disappointed with the frequency of missed focus shots and slow to focus issues in certain lighting conditions. I knew I'd be sacrificing the shallow DOF look you get when shooting wider than f/2.8, but what I didn't realize was how great the bokeh / background blur would be with the 70-200 zoomed beyond the 135mm range. What I also didn't expect was the incredible eye popping color, tack sharp images, and fast accurate focusing. Many people complain about how heavy this lens is and I have no problem packing this around while shooting events for 8 hours or more attached to a full frame body with a battery grip and external flash. My only regret was that I waited so long to purchase this lens. This is a must have for portraits, weddings, and just about anything else you want to shoot. Do I still shoot primes?.... well of course I do, but I find myself using this lens more often than not. One of the most impressive things about this lens is the Image stabilization, with IS on I am able to hand hold this lens zoomed in at 200mm at shutter speeds as low as 1/20th sec while still capturing acceptable images (something I would never attempt with my 135L). If you are thinking about buying this lens stop thinking and just do it. You will not regret it…

I have been engaged in photography for more than 40 years with a statistical process improvement background. So I was more than interested to see if the 70-200 f-2.8 L II was significantly better than the L I. After 2 days of intensive testing my findings using both an EOS 1DS and 20D body are as follows. Contrast for the L II was slightly better. Resolution at 200mm was consistently 1 pair number lower [less good] at the center at f-2.8, 4.0, and 5.6 on the USAF 1951 resolution chart. Resolution through a series 1 Canon 2X multiplier was equal over the same aperture settings. The extreme edge resolution was seen to be slightly better from images of books on a shelf—"real world". Auto focus was significantly faster in bright light, which may be of benefit depending on what you photograph. Image stabilization is about 1 stop improved, but with the high ISO capabilities of current Canon cameras, a one stop increased setting would equalize this difference at the possible expense of increased noise. I chose not to test another sample, because even if a newer sample were to test one pair number higher [better] than the L I, [a possible manufacturing variation] the improvement would probably not be detectable by viewing a 300 PPI printed version at "normal viewing distance." For my purpose, primarily fine art photography, my results simply do not justify the price. So my advice is to test carefully before committing to an L II purchase; reality vs. your expectations may vary…

Takes 5 star quality photos with one drawback

Comments about Canon EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS II USM Lens:

I could easily have given this 5 stars as the only drawback I have is the weight, and that issue was well documented prior to me buying the lens. While I should have been prepared for a monster of a lens, it was still bigger and heavier than I expected. I'm no stranger to carrying around a heavy camera bag, but this lens is not at all conducive to long trips. It also pretty much necessitates a tripod if you're doing a longer shoot. That aside, the depth of field is amazing and it produces ridiculously sharp images.
It produces stunning bokeh when wide open at f2.8.

I've put this on a Mark IV as well as a 70D, and am actually happier with the latter as the crop factor takes it closer to a 300 mm max focal length.

Awesome lens, just prohibitively large and heavy.

I only have one regret about this lens that I didn't buy it sooner :) I had Tamrons and Sigmas and nothing comes close to this one. It's is so sharp, contrasty and renders the colors beautifully. AF is lighting quick for such a big lens. My advice if you need this range save up more and skip 3rd party manufactures and get this. As always BH was great in delivering this beauty from NYC to Toronto in 3 days with no hassles. Thanks for your great service.

Can't beat this lens. As a hobbyist, it took a long time to justify the cost, but well worth it. It will be a "lifetime" lens.

Comments about Canon EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS II USM Lens:

My favorite lens. Light and accurate - great sharp crisp images, easy to use. Easy adjustment of a switch for tight shots and more distance shoots. Quality of ƒ2.8 lens is unreal. I prefer not to shoot with a monopod or tripod, this lens to light enough for all shoots.

Comments about Canon EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS II USM Lens:

I had been occasionally renting one of these over the past few years. I finally decided I just had to own one outright. I have used it a few times in the short time I have had it and just LOVE it. While it is a bit heavy, the versatility when you have nice open/outdoor places to shoot is wonderful. Crisp detail with beautiful bokeh!

Comments about Canon EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS II USM Lens:

I've mostly used the awesome and much loved Canon 24-105mm f4 L IS lens for going on 10 years and considered its images super sharp. Fact is I bought a new one 6 months ago as I'd worn out the first with about 200k actuations. I also recently upgraded from a crop sensor 7D to a 5D Mark III. Given the loss of reach with a full frame sensor I'd decided to pull the trigger on the IS 70-200mm f2.8 lens, for more than anything to get my reach back. However the added sharpness, low light abilities and super nice bokeh have simply blown me away! This is an incredible lens. I've used under stadium lighting for football and soccer with great results. With 16 grandkids I take lots of pics of them. Lots of action as well, with natural in home lighting, with exceptional results. I have two dogs and love to take pics of them as I wander our local desert country with them, with great results. If the pocketbook allows you won't be sorry! Only downside is that compared to the 24-105mm it is a HEAVY beast! Small price to pay though, for me.

Hands down the best lens I have purchased for my yearbook program. It really is a game changer and I thank B&H for shipping it in time for the first football game of the year. The stabilizer for the 80D camera Mode 2 helps control the movement; because of the weight of the lens.

This lens does a great job and produces absolutely crisp, sharp, clear shots. Yes, it is heavy, however, I knew that when I bought it. Do your homework and make sure that it is the right lens for you. If you do nature or airshow photography, it will serve you well !

Absolutely stunning! Using it on a 70D right now and never had such sharp images. It is heavier than the Tamron, and this off-white color is annoying IMO, but overall I'm very happy with it.
