I have never been a big fan of zoom lenses until I purchased this lens. In the last few years I have shot Canon L primes almost exclusively on full frame bodies (mainly the 35L, 50L, 85L, and the 135L) loved the results but sometimes disappointed with the frequency of missed focus shots and slow to focus issues in certain lighting conditions. I knew I'd be sacrificing the shallow DOF look you get when shooting wider than f/2.8, but what I didn't realize was how great the bokeh / background blur would be with the 70-200 zoomed beyond the 135mm range. What I also didn't expect was the incredible eye popping color, tack sharp images, and fast accurate focusing. Many people complain about how heavy this lens is and I have no problem packing this around while shooting events for 8 hours or more attached to a full frame body with a battery grip and external flash. My only regret was that I waited so long to purchase this lens. This is a must have for portraits, weddings, and just about anything else you want to shoot. Do I still shoot primes?.... well of course I do, but I find myself using this lens more often than not. One of the most impressive things about this lens is the Image stabilization, with IS on I am able to hand hold this lens zoomed in at 200mm at shutter speeds as low as 1/20th sec while still capturing acceptable images (something I would never attempt with my 135L). If you are thinking about buying this lens stop thinking and just do it. You will not regret it…

I have been engaged in photography for more than 40 years with a statistical process improvement background. So I was more than interested to see if the 70-200 f-2.8 L II was significantly better than the L I. After 2 days of intensive testing my findings using both an EOS 1DS and 20D body are as follows. Contrast for the L II was slightly better. Resolution at 200mm was consistently 1 pair number lower [less good] at the center at f-2.8, 4.0, and 5.6 on the USAF 1951 resolution chart. Resolution through a series 1 Canon 2X multiplier was equal over the same aperture settings. The extreme edge resolution was seen to be slightly better from images of books on a shelf—"real world". Auto focus was significantly faster in bright light, which may be of benefit depending on what you photograph. Image stabilization is about 1 stop improved, but with the high ISO capabilities of current Canon cameras, a one stop increased setting would equalize this difference at the possible expense of increased noise. I chose not to test another sample, because even if a newer sample were to test one pair number higher [better] than the L I, [a possible manufacturing variation] the improvement would probably not be detectable by viewing a 300 PPI printed version at "normal viewing distance." For my purpose, primarily fine art photography, my results simply do not justify the price. So my advice is to test carefully before committing to an L II purchase; reality vs. your expectations may vary…

Comments about Canon EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS II USM Lens:

Haven't had a chance to put it through all the paces yet, but from what I've seen so far, it's a very impressive lens. I am now seeing what the others were raving about in regards to IS. As a result, I probably won't need a tripod very often. Really like the constant 2.8 capability, too. All that and very sharp images!

Bought this to replace 70-200 f/2.8L I had for 8 yrs

Comments about Canon EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS II USM Lens:

I bought a 70-200 f/2.8L IS version 1 lens in 2007 & used it for many hundreds of photoshoots of theater & concerts, a few weddings and scores of events, portraits and nature shots. My son is now doing photoshoots for a NYC music organization, so I lent him that lens this summer and he found it indispensable. So, being a mom, I gave it to him as an early birthday present & bought this lens. I know, I could have given him the new lens, but he is more careless than I would like, and he's happy enough, as he should be! It's a fabulous lens, the first version. So why did I buy the new version, the II? Because I'm greedy. I read up on it extensively and decided the $700 difference was worth it. I rationalized it, actually, as I am not a full-time photographer & wouldn't be making up the difference soon.

I got the lens a few weeks ago and used it for my first theater gig last Friday in NYC. I haven't done a scientific study of the two lenses side by side, but I do think there's an extra bit of oomph in this new one--I can shoot in lower light, slower speed & still get a nice, crisp shot. Where this lens is absolutely immediately different from version I is that you can get a few feet closer to your subject--a big plus for portraits & nature shots. So, I'm very happy with it. It does cost a ton of $ but what the heck. It is a fantastic lens.

I had used this lens in the past and had fell in love with it. After a couple of years of dreaming about it I decided to buy it. I love this lens! I shoot concerts and 70-200mm gives me a range to work with that leaves me primarily using one lens all evening! Being able to have my aperture open at f/2.8 allows me to shoot with a lower iso in low light situations. I plan on this lens being part of my line up for years to come!

Comments about Canon EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS II USM Lens:

Not sure that this one is any sharper than my version I on stationary subjects, but I do macro adjust focusing on all my lens, so that could be the reason; and both are tack sharp. Image quality is better with the version II; and it's much better at focusing on moving objects. Also, the IS is noticeably quieter. Overall, a great lens!

Wow - This is a really great lens

Comments about Canon EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS II USM Lens:

I had been using the stock EFS 18-135mm Image Stabalizer lens that came with my Canon EOS 60D. Really nice lens, but I couldn't get close enough shots of kids on soccer field and lighting was too dim to get good hockey shots indoors. The EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS II USM Lens fixes that. This is an awesome lens. Gave me everything I was hoping for in the sports areas. Got benefits of some great wildlife shots (i.e. an eagle carrying a fish). I cannot really list any cons, the weight is heavy, but it is made really well, the cost is around 1800, but worth it. If you can pay the price you will not be disappointed.

Comments about Canon EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS II USM Lens:

After renting this lens 6+ times, I was able to scrape together enough get one that I don't ever have to send back. I photo birds for fun and events for $$$. This lens give me the reach and flexibility in most situations as needed. I've rented and borrowed similar 70-200 focal length lenses and they never produce images for me like this one.

Comments about Canon EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS II USM Lens:

For well over 7 years I have shot professionally with the version 1 lens and recently sold it to a friend. I photographed weddings, engagements, portraits, sports, and landscape. The lens stayed attached to my camera 90% of the time. I debated for quite some time between the 200mm 2.8 lens and the version II, so I decided to go for the new 70-200mm and I'm so glad I did. The images are much more brighter and contrasty than my previous lens. It performs so much better. The focus is much more consistent and definitely well worth the price if you're serious about photography. This lens produces incredible images!

A staple in any collection!

Comments about Canon EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS II USM Lens:

I use this lens for fashion photography, headshots and sports. After a long day of carrying this lens around the IS is a big plus for those who may get a little wobbly. I have also gotten beautiful results using it for video production as well. Especially on interviews when you want some distance between you and the subject, the background just melts away. A very sturdy build and the only drawback for some would be the weight. But then a real photographer doesn't complain, we just get the job done!

Comments about Canon EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS II USM Lens:

I returned my 24-70 2.8 for this lens, I found myself using the upper end on the 24-70 and I was not happy with the sharpness at the lower end. This lens is great, super sharp and I really like the ability to zoom in for a close up shot. I have used the lens at a couple outdoor events and all the photos turned out great. I think this lens will be my most used going forward.

There is something special about the first time you pick this lens up. Well weighted for handheld and tripod use and the focus / zoom rings are solid. It is sooo fast with focusing and the images are crisp and clean even with heavy cropping. Definitely a must for any professional or serious enthusiast.

Comments about Canon EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS II USM Lens:

I am an amateur that takes lots of photos, culling many. I have used this lens only once since it arrived. I took an off the cuff photo of our new Golden Retriever pup laying on the bed. With my 5D in moderate to poor soft lighting the shot was awesome. I believe the photo to be superb considering it was a spur of the moment with the camera on auto mode. This lens and I will be very close companions.

Upgraded from the 70-200mm f/4.0

Comments about Canon EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS II USM Lens:

I was happy with my f/4. unit but was tired of bumping up the ISO to use it indoors. I took the plunge & got the f/2.8 unit & am very pleased. I'm sacrificing NOTHING in IQ and the wider aperture is proving to be a godsend. It's a bit heavier but the benefits outweigh (so to speak) the increase in size & weight.
