I have been saving for a 70-200 lens for the past 18 months reading reviews on Nikon, Sigma and Tamron. Based on what I read and results, comments of others that own the lenses and an evaluation of the cost/benefit by price I chose the Sigma for my Nikon D610. After two weeks of use I couldn't be happier with my choice. The Nikon would have been great but I didn't want to spend the extra $1,000 after looking at some others results. I have shot over 1,000 images of baseball, many with the addition of the 1.4x teleconverter I purchased as well, and the images are sharp with great contrast. The focusing was very fast with no issues on back focusing that I had read about. Yes, this lens is heavy and took some getting use too, and more push ups every day, but that is what I expected when I decided to purchase a fast telephoto zoom. I am going to start shooting more portratits in the coming months. My conclusion after the first two weeks is - buy it! It is a great value with very comprobale results to the Nikon and it leaves you money left over for other equipment you may need.

Purchased for the speed, and medium telephoto range, and price after reviewing reports on Tamron, Sigma, and a couple of Nikon entries. I already have a Sigma 50-500 lens that I am quite happy with, but the particular lens I received had signicant back focus, particularly over its mid-range and tended to be less sharp than I wanted. Rather than swap for another Sigma lens, I swollowed hard and chose a Nikon 70-200 VR II.

Great for indoor volleyball!

Comments about Sigma 70-200mm f/2.8 EX DG APO OS HSM for Nikon:

Hi,

I have a daughter who plays cub volleyball. I always used to use my cell phone to take pictures. But as many of you know, they cant freeze the action. Her and her teammates were always out of focus at the most exciting times. So I decided to do something about it.

I purchased a Nikon D5600 and a friend later directed me to use this lens. He told me that I need the larger aperture and low light performance that this lens offers. I took the plunge and it has been a blast ever since.

The lens helped me capture so many great moments. It is worth every penny. I have since upgraded my camera body to the Nikon D500 and can't wait for the next tournament!

Thank you B&H for your outstanding service and selection.

Eric

Great lens, built well and the sharpness is excellent. If you can't take a good, sharp photo with this Sigma lens, it's a "you" problem not a "lens" problem.

Comments about Sigma 70-200mm f/2.8 EX DG APO OS HSM for Nikon:

The Nikkor 70-200 f/2.8 VR II is my favorite lens. But, I needed a good back up in case something happened to my A-lens on a shoot. After a lot of research, finally decided on this Sigma. It's really great - I've even used it over the Nikkor on a shoot recently. So glad to have this lens in my bag!

Comments about Sigma 70-200mm f/2.8 EX DG APO OS HSM for Nikon:

As a community photojournalist I am on a limited budget. A Nikon equivalent was just out of reach for me. Since my publication is online, rarely are my photos printed very large, I decided this lens would do what I needed. It was one of my best decisions to purchase it. It is extremely sharp, from edge to edge. I read that in low light conditions the lens was slow to focus. I have shot two were concerts, had no problems at all. Had two crime incidents at night in very low light. I did experience some problems with it focusing, but the light was very low night lighting. I think any lens would have had a difficult time focusing. Very happy with my purchase.

Comments about Sigma 70-200mm f/2.8 EX DG APO OS HSM for Nikon:

This lens exceeds all my expectations for a bright portrait zoom. I have been an amateur and semi-pro photographer/videographer for ten years now so I have a reasonable amount of experience with midrange zooms and this lens leaves no room for complaint. The stabilization is effective and the images are sharper than my "G" primes wide open.

I love this lens. It's extremely clear, and the zoom is great for being far away from your sebject. Haven't used it much, but when I have my images are amazing.

Comments about Sigma 70-200mm f/2.8 EX DG APO OS HSM for Nikon:

I am a big Sigma lens fan, so I really loved working with this lens right off the bat. It does have some weight. I really like how the lens support has a screw allowing you to swivel it to different locations on the lens. I was instantly able to capture very sharp images with this lens. It handled well in low light conditions as well. I filmed in heavy fog with it and was able to capture some really good footage of wildlife.

Comments about Sigma 70-200mm f/2.8 EX DG APO OS HSM for Nikon:

Weird. Person writing a review on a lens they didn't even buy from the website??? Ok, but I got it directly from sigma and WOW. I have the Nikon mount version and it is SHARP. I have tried all of the other image stabilized lenses, (Or what every you want to call that tech), and on the Nikon, This guy keeps up with Tamron(VC), Nikon(VR1&2), and even the Nikon(80-200). The focus is slightly slower than the Nikon(VR2) but the price isn't as steep. As for the Tamron, its very close and the matte finish on the Sigma is slick. The Tamron's being a pearl/luster finish. The Old VR from Nikon is nicer looking, IMO, but not nearly as capable as the newer models from Tamron, Sigma, or Nikon.
Pro's: Retail is 1399.99 but sigma has some nice rebates on it to bring that price down even more.
          The Focus is fast.
The Lens is sharp. Even with Sigma's 1.4 Tele on.
The design of the lens is VERY nice.
They give you a sigma bag! (No bag with the Tamron)   :-(
An APSC hood extender a nice add on.
The collar is solid and allows for you to smoothly maneuver the lens while mounted.
Con's:70-200mm 2.8's are not the lightest lenses to hand hold for hours on end but thats true about the Nikon and Tamron also.
The Nikon, IMO, is a better quality lens for a higher price.
The Tamron's VC is a bit more "stabilize (1/3 of a stop more or so.)
The bag design is boxy and not sleek.
The focus ring is the first thing you get to moving out from the body. Admittedly, It's not a game changer, but coming from the Nikon glass, I missed some shots because I grabbed the wrong ring.(My mistake)

Overall, A great purchase in the 2.8 aperture category and I am very glad that I went with this lens. Remember this has been "My Opinion". My findings may be different than other peoples so believe what you want. I have done portraits and sports with this lens and am eager to shoot more.

Great lens, but too heavy for me. If you don't mind the weight, it's a great hunk of glass. Far better value than the comparable Nikon lens.

Comments about Sigma 70-200mm f/2.8 EX DG APO OS HSM for Nikon:

I had been putting off going from the "kit" lens I got with my D800 to an f/2.8 for obvious reasons. They are not inexpensive, and heck.... I have a long lens already (@ f/5.6). I decided to make the investment and wish I would have the FIRST TIME I LOOKED INTO THESE LENSES. The creativity, clarity and field of this lens would have made the thousands of photos I took with the old lens so much better (the photos I took while hemming and hawing about the $). I did compare this Sigma to the Nikon and Tamron on an earlier search and found the Sigma to be excellent at almost 1/2 the price of the Nikon.
DO IT! DO IT NOW, YOU WON'T REGRET THE RESULTS!!!

Great value in a quality lens. Used for sports photography, mainly NASCAR. Quick focus, just a good lens. Of course it is a little heavy, but all lenses of this size and quality are a little heavy.

I used the lens for a graduation ceremony to get closer to the stage than my 24-70mm could. The photos so far have been sharp and clear. Like any lens that size is it heavier when not using a tripod but that is expected.
