I was debating with this or the Tamron 17 50 2.8.
Everything I read Sigma was the clear winner.

Fabulous Buy

Comments about Sigma 17-50mm f/2.8 EX DC HSM Zoom Lens for Pentax DSLRs W/APS-C Sensors:

Bought this lens after I realized that most of my photography falls within this focal length. This has been very handy to have and the f 2.8 doesn't hurt a bit either. Images are sharp, clear, vibrant. Auto focus is fast enough and accurate. Size, although not compact, is a good fit for the camera without being particularly heavy. I bought when it was discounted which makes it a fabulous buy.

Comments about Sigma 17-50mm f/2.8 EX DC HSM Zoom Lens for Pentax DSLRs W/APS-C Sensors:

This lens has replaced all of my expensive Pentax lenses. It is very sharp, way less color fringing than my Pentax lenses, and really enjoyable to use. It is a little heavier than my other lenses but feels nice and solid. Worth every penny.

Excellent Crisp Focus

Comments about Sigma 17-50mm f/2.8 EX DC HSM Zoom Lens for Pentax DSLRs W/APS-C Sensors:

This lens out-performed Pentax equivalent in all reviews so I purchased it as a "walk around lens". Very pleased with build quality, quiet focus and excellent photo performance. Love that Sigma includes a lens lock to prevent lens creep when you're hiking around with the camera on your shoulder. I hike in some tough terrain and when the lens on my Pentax 18-135 creeps out it makes me very unhappy. Gave it 4 instead of 5 stars only because it is a pretty heavy set of optics, but a lot of that is related to its excellent build so I'll take the trade off any time.

Just got the lens, but very impressed so far. Much better reviews than Pentax equivalent so I got this. A little heavy but I'll put up with it in return for better performance. Autofocus quick and quiet. Images sharp and pleasing.

Comments about Sigma 17-50mm f/2.8 EX DC HSM Zoom Lens for Pentax DSLRs W/APS-C Sensors:

This lens fits the Pentax K-3 and is much better than the kit lens. Have not tried all the different ranges and F/stops, but when I have used it it has given me the results I want. You cannot get any better than that. At this time, no complaints.

Considerable Upgrade

By CAugustBlatz

Comments about Sigma 17-50mm f/2.8 EX DC HSM Zoom Lens for Pentax DSLRs W/APS-C Sensors:

I've been shooting, as a hobbyist, with a kit lens since 2008. After beginning to print my images larger, though, I was really noticing the softness that's been there all along. I had no idea how great the impact of an aftermarket lens could be. It is drastic.

The build quality of this lens makes the kit lenses feel like toys. Granted, it is significantly heavier than the kit lens. Personally, I like this. I imagine that many folks would think it was too heavy. But it feels like it's going to last.

Another point to consider: it's huge. It dwarfs kit lens. It's a lot more conspicuous for street shooting, and it feels more in-your-face for portraiture.

The performance, though, is incredible. Incredible. I don't use autofocus very much, but this lens is almost completely silent. I was used to the normal, loud, clacking autofocus of the kit lens. This barely makes a peep as it quickly pops into focus.

As to be expected with a larger maximum aperture, the lens is a lot brighter. I mean that it's more than just 'faster,' though. Images appear more consistently bright across the frame. Sharpness has increased dramatically. I used to experience a lot of chromatic aberrations and softness. Images produced with this lens show significantly reduced CR and a sognificant improvement in sharpness.

I've experienced a lot less ghosting during low-loght work woth the Sigma. Bokeh is very nice compared to the kit pens, as well.

Long story short, if you're on the fence about whether or not this will be an improvement over your kit lens, reat assured that it will be, and not an insignificant one at that.

Bottom line, based on the build quality, image quality, and affordability of this lens, I can't wait to get my hands on some more Sigma glass. I've got my eye on the 70-300mm APO, next.

Comments about Sigma 17-50mm f/2.8 EX DC HSM Zoom Lens for Pentax DSLRs W/APS-C Sensors:

This is a sharp lens and a good option if you don't need WR.
It is fairly small for the range and speed it provides.
I give it 4 stars. It would have been 5 if Sigma had made it a WR lens.

Comments about Sigma 17-50mm f/2.8 EX DC HSM Zoom Lens for Pentax DSLRs W/APS-C Sensors:

So far a very good all around lens. Quick focus. Images are very good. Lens cap can be a little tricky putting back on when hood is on. B&H offered great service & price and quick delivery. There are slightly better lenses available, but at much higher costs...
All depends what you need.

I have never spent a lot of time with wide lens but this one has opened a whole new experience for me. Compact with a quick zoom, excellent images and just plain fun to use for interior shots and scenery. Need more time to fully evaluate but seems to be quite as good as my other Pentax lenses.

Picked this one up during a holiday special. Just cannot justify spending the kind of money some of these lenses can fetch for a hobby I like to partake in here and there. Lens is fast, images are sharper than the finest cheddar money can buy, AF is fast, and I didn't have to refinance my house to buy it. This was the perfect addition to my small but growing collection, was really looking for a solid walk around lens, and this is it. Aside from the times when I'm doing Milky Way photography with my 16mm f/2.0 lens, this will be attached to my Pentax K-5 IIS.

Comments about Sigma 17-50mm f/2.8 EX DC HSM Zoom Lens for Pentax DSLRs W/APS-C Sensors:

This is a great zoom to replace your kit lens. It's wide angle to short telephoto is perfect for landscapes, to street photography, to portraits. It's sharp all the way across the focal length, but there is some noticeable pin cushion distortion at 17mm but is easily fixed in post.

Great lens construction, silent autofocus is a huge huge huge bonus. Those screw drive motors are noisy and annoying. Though it's not completely silent, it's 10x quieter than screw drive.

Lens is easy to hold. Depending on your perspective, the zoom direction might be reversed. You have to twist the zoom ring left to zoom instead of the usual right. The lens hood is a great bonus as this lens suffers from flaring a lot. The case is a very nice touch too, I like that Sigma includes cases with their lens.

I like to think of this lens as a bunch of primes in one zoom. It has prime like image quality. Really nice lens, I would definitely recommend. It's similar to the Pentax DA* 16-50, but at half the price and even better. Only advantage that the DA* has is the weather sealing, which i sometimes wish this lens had.

HSM are quiet and fast on my K-3 body; a great lens when compared to similar offerings elsewhere. Aperture of f2.8 was indeed quick, but not quick enough, but please don't blame Sigma! My tastes are begining to lean toward the prime lens. I had to think long and hard about keeping this gem. I ended up using B and H's gracious policy to return, so I can fund pricier primes. Based upon Sigma build quality and price? I will definitely consider their prime offerings; they seem to make nice stuff for Pentax, wish they made more!

Comments about Sigma 17-50mm f/2.8 EX DC HSM Zoom Lens for Pentax DSLRs W/APS-C Sensors:

I've only had this lens a couple weeks and have only been able to take test shots of pets and family/friends. Thus far I'm extraordinarily pleased with its performance, especially considering the price. This was my upgrade from the standard 18-55mm pentax kit lens. The Sigma produces very sharp images with no chromatic aberration (until you blow-up the pictures to full size on a giant monitor and even then its very faint). I love having the large aperture through the entire zoom and surprisingly feel comfortable shooting wide open and can expect sharp images. Great for indoor lighting events. Macro performance was also surprisingly strong. The only thing this lens is missing is a weather-sealed construction.
