OK, so the corners are soft, as some reviewers noted. Other than that, can anyone tell the difference from lenses costing multiples of this one? Maybe at the pixel level. My first choice was Sigma 10-20/ 3.5 in Alpha mount and Alpha/ E mount adapter. When I saw how that lens dwarfs the NEX body, I decided to give a chance to this fixed focal length pancake. If it did not meet my IQ expectations, I would have returned it. After dozens of test shots reviewed on 46" TV screen I just cannot justify giving it up for anything larger and more expensive. My NEX 6 kit came with the amazing 16-50 lens and I wanted something wider without going fisheye. 0.75x converter custom made for this lens takes care of that. I keep that converter permanently on. With all image corrections by the NEX body engaged, the pictures show hardly any linear distortion, no visible CA. Comparison with Sony 10-18 lens shows that the later is sharper, but the difference can be appreciated only at or near 100% magnification. Viewing the full 16:9 pictures of the same scene on 46" screen does not help recognize which picture was taken with which lens, other than softer corners. Also, at 10mm the zoom lens shows noticeably more perspective distortion (stretching) at the vertical edges than 16mm with 0.75x converter. Sony zoom is smaller and less than half weight than my original first choice Sigma 10-20. To my taste, the 16mm silver combo looks better on the black NEX body than the black 10-18 zoom. Phase detection autofocus does not work with either lens. Zoom has the optical stabilization, 16mm lens does not. That may partially account for the sharpness difference between the two in the handheld test pictures taken indoors.

I use NEX3 with 16/2.8 to supplement my primary Olympus E-3 with Zuiko 12-60. Mostly urban and landscape photos, documentary rather than pretty postcards. At least half of them made at the widest available angle. So far all my Sony experience, around 200 shots, was in broad daylight @ ISO 200.

Both Sony 16/2.8 and Zuiko at 12 mm are equivalent to 24 mm, but owing to 3/2 frame format and different distortion pattern, real-world photos from Sony are noticeably wider. Slight pincushion distortion of the Sony usually needs no correction. Focusing with NEX-3 is almost always good (unlike the inconsistent Olympus). No signs of flare at all (but then I never experienced it with the Zuiko either). End of good news.

Bad news: image quality beats pocket superzooms, but it's not a match for a midrange SLR zoom like Zuiko 12-60 or a cheaper Canon 10-22. If you read independent reviews you probably know that the Sony is quite soft, with sweet spot at F/8 and above. It's true, although the stop-down gain between F/4 (imo the widest practical aperture) and F/8 is marginal.

Worse, contrast rendition is unpleasant and it's quite inconsistent across the frame - some shots show a noticeable difference in contrast from center to edges. Overall, out-of-camera jpegs look mushed, untidy, like a pocket camera - there's fine detail but photos just looks dull, even with a polarizer on a sunny day.

My sample also is decentered - left third of the frame is consistently worse than the right one. At F/10 decentering reduces to acceptable levels. Other samples tested at the dealers' also had some centering problems and one refused focusing out-of-the-box (and it was May-June 2011, one year after introduction).

Good wide angle lens. Aperture size is not enough to provide good light. Sharp at f/8 and smaller aperture.

I bought this lense so I could take wide angle portrait shots during my son's college graduation.  I didn't have a lense that could do the blurred background well.  This lense has exceeded my expectations!

nice easy to use light weight lens; using it to photograph interiors and tight spaces. very much enjoying it. might buy the extension down the road for an even wider angle.

Great pancake lens for a great price. I use this on my gimbal. I also attach an ultra wide convertor to get a wider angle. I like it because it is compact and is convenient for causal walk around shooting. Works great.

Comments about Sony E-Mount SEL16F28 16mm f/2.8 Wide-Angle Alpha E-Mount Lens (Silver):

I was looking for a fast wide angle, so I bought the 16mm+ultra wide converter for my a6000. Image quality is only ok. I was hoping for something much sharper. I wish the sharpness was closer to that of the sony sel 35mm f/1.8 prime (which I love). Also, to my eyes, the silver lens looks a little strange on the black body, but would be a non-issue if the IQ were better.

Just not sharp enough

Comments about Sony E-Mount SEL16F28 16mm f/2.8 Wide-Angle Alpha E-Mount Lens (Silver):

I bought to use on a Sony a6500 along with a Sony E 35mm F/1.8 Oss lens. This lens is way too soft in the images and video. Compared to the 35mm, it's not even close. The 35mm is razor sharp for pictures & video with very quick focus. The 16mm will most likely be my first B&H return. It's just not usable.

Comments about Sony E-Mount SEL16F28 16mm f/2.8 Wide-Angle Alpha E-Mount Lens (Silver):

Put this on my A6500 and I am very pleased so far. Fast, sharp and AF has worked pretty well so far. Does not seem to want to sync up with the touch screen focus....but that may just be my set up. I will need to look into that more.
The whole set up is "almost" pocket size and is very unassuming.
This is definitely my go-to lens for my next vacation and family stuff. (On the 6500 the 16mm =~ 24mm

Very handy and compact wide angle for Sony A6000

Comments about Sony E-Mount SEL16F28 16mm f/2.8 Wide-Angle Alpha E-Mount Lens (Silver):

I get some really good use out of this lens, and combine it with the ultra-wide converter when needed.

I am happy with the results, but the more I use it the more I notice the loss of sharp detail around the edges of the photo.  I'm not sure if that is something to be expected out of a wide angle lens.

In general I've been very happy with all of my Sony products (a6000, 50mm F1.8, 16mm F2.8, and ultra wide converter).

      Comments about Sony E-Mount SEL16F28 16mm f/2.8 Wide-Angle Alpha E-Mount Lens (Silver):

I purchased the Sony 16mm because I wanted to try boththe Sony fisheye attachment and extra wide angle adapter on my A6000. Decent stuff, not Leica, but o.k. for around the house.
The small size, sharpness of the lens is definitely worth the price.
The extra wide angle good for family shots, street scenes, a fun clicker.
Fisheye attachment definitely worth its light weight. I paid 4 times more for the Lumix fisheye. I feel the Sony does just as well.
Nothing like all metal construction to inspire confidence - which none of these products have. Yes, after using for a couple of weeks I appreciate the light weight of it all. No sore wrists!
It's a few bucks spent well. No regrets.
