So you are probably like me, sorting products by price - low to high and you found the H1 right there at the top. Your next question will probably be if going cheap will take you all the way to heavenly field recordings. Then you start imagining what the size will allow you to do. It fits nicely in your pocket and is light enough that you can actually keep it in your shirt pocket. At least these were some of the things I wondered about before getting mine.

First of all, anyone who ever thought of getting one of those voice recorders - you should all get this one, because it gives you superior sound quality and is just as small. Having said that, depending on what you plan to record, you might want to compare the sound quality with other products. I use mine mostly for voice recordings, field recordings for music and to record rehearsals and concerts. As I just mentioned, voice recordings come out perfect and a conversation with several people in a big room, such as a conference room or even a lecture hall is no problem. For my field recordings, the H1 does indeed lack some detail, especially in the higher frequencies, slightly altering the sense of room space, transparency, depth and distance, both indoors and outdoors. But the noise level is very low, which allows you to do more detailed work on the recordings on the computer. Rehearsals at very high volume do sound a bit compressed and distorted and obviously you are going to lose dynamics and clarity, but it still does a pretty good job of separating highs, mids and lows, leaving you with a fairly accurate description of what was actually going on during the recording.

What I really don't like is the clicking sound that seems to be impossible to avoid at the beginning and the end of each recording. This forces you to edit every single file by hand, regardless of how the actual recording came out.

What I do like is the size versus sound quality and the price. It really leaves you no excuse to not bring it with you to record any sound that you might encounter during a day. This kind of flexibility, at least for me, almost always leads to more creativity. Although be careful with recording sounds close to a police officer, it does look a lot like a taser.

I'd had my eye on smaller solid state recorder for a little while when this came on the horizon, the other main contenders were Sony IC internal memory units. H1 won over on paper with the better mics and recording to card instead of internal memory.

As many others have mentioned, the wind noise is very very sensitive. I wouldn't ever have the small windsock off unless it was really safe indoors. The mics already bulge out of the top of the unit so a windsock and certainly a windjammer add significant size to the unit. All this leads to more 'poking out of your pocket; rather than pocket sized recorder. This makes me think how the H2 is in many ways more suited to the 'pocket sized' tag as its pop filter mesh handles light breeze well and the whole unit is a rectangle.

Also the "cheap plastic" feel which has been well covered is pretty accurate. But it feels like an AV remote, not a phone or something solid. The main impact of this apart from peoples 'quality perception' is that it makes handling noise really sensitive as the plastic case creaks into the mics.

In the first few weeks of use ive had the flimsy card door dislodge and get lost, lost one recording which didn't save, juggled a few outdoor interviews trying to block the wind with my or the interviewees bodies and only drop it a couple of times (should attach a strap soon)

The sony IC recorders still win out for the minimalists as they are significantly slimmer + small, have their own slide out USB plug and charge a single battery thru that plug. Poor metering though. Important considerations for a cycle touring sound ethnographer / field recordist - but this unit is very decent. Just don't believe the ipod style "this is the new very best thing, in the smallest package for the cheapest price" spiels! enjoy.

I purchased the H1 to experiment with a new mic, successfully. A lady friend saw it, liked the size and weight and simplicity to operate and uses it to record her gigs at the local tourist haunts. She's a drummer in an all girl trio. I guess that gives it two thumbs up!

Comments about H1 Ultra-Portable Digital Audio Recorder (Gray):

This thing is an incredible value for any journalist, short-film maker or anyone on a budget. The sound quality is incredible for the price. I used this thing at a protest and the screaming and chanting in the background was very subtle in the background of my interviews and the voice audio was clear and crisp. Also, I don't know what people are complaining about with the playback volume on the recorder, the thing plays back loud and clear. Perfect!

Very handy recorder

Comments about H1 Ultra-Portable Digital Audio Recorder (Blue):

A great tiny portable mic that records good sound appropriate for narration and voiceovers, and just getting that isolated from environment sounds. This one is best used when aimed close to the source and avoids getting the low noise, or the unfortunate acoustics of the space you are recording in. In some cases, that may be what you want, and you can back up further from the source and increase your levels. With the right adapter and cables, it's light and small enough that you can also use it as a shotgun mic.

Incredable profesional machine in a tiny package.

Comments about H1 Ultra-Portable Digital Audio Recorder (Blue):

This recorder can be taken anywhere it is so small . The blue plastic casing is a bit thin and the small plastic control feel fragile , but , that is a very minor point compared to the number of professional controls on the unit .In some of the blogs some people have had them for years and nothing has broken . Distortion and background noise (hiss) virtually do not exist . The Mikes in the unit have a very wide freq response . The playback quality is practically flawless .
I would recommend it for anybody who wants to record extremely high quality choir , live opera , musicals , and orchestras , band practice , jazz music or simply a lecture . i like the traditional yellow color lights illuminating the display , the same color as in VU meters , I and others like the the blue case color , is not bright , and in a dim room it looks black .To sum it up I am so excited about the unit I am going to purchase another .
PS And to think the whole thing runs on a single "A" battery ............... Alan .

Comments about H1 Ultra-Portable Digital Audio Recorder (Blue):

Decent low-end recorder. Very easy to use. Mikes are not very good, but fine for voice memos. I use it for music to record practice sessions and love the ease, but it is somewhat limited by the quality of sound and compression of dynamics.

Recorder is too sensitive. Will record anything that is brushed up against it. Will even record your hand movements when handheld. I even tried using a handle attached to the tripod mount and any slight movements is recorded.

Comments about H1 Ultra-Portable Digital Audio Recorder (Blue):

Got this for $75, just because it's in blue? Yeah, I can deal with a non-black item in my bag for a lower cost.

I was actually really suprised as what this little guy can do. Wanted an upgrade for use with video footage (upgrade from an iPhone and the on-camera mic), and this little guy is great. Have used it for just field recordings, hooked it up to a audio recording DAW and it works great, have yet to hook it up directly to the camera, but have used it on the side with accompanying video footage and it's great. Wish I would have thought of it sooner.

5-star for beginner use.

Outstanding

Comments about H1 Ultra-Portable Digital Audio Recorder (Black):

I now own three of these and utilize them 90% of the time for wedding videography.  These are used to capture audio of the bridesmaids and groomsmen and the sound quality is great (I use it with external mics plugged in).  My settings are set to .wav files vs. the compressed .mp3 files and then I edit these within Premiere Pro with the rest of the footage.  I would highly recommend these and would not hesitate to purchase another, if needed.

(And to the user below who mentioned no drivers for Macs??  Seriously??!)  Lol ... I'm hoping they wrote it to be funny.

...yes; good things do come in small packages.

Comments about H1 Ultra-Portable Digital Audio Recorder (Blue):

The H1 is definitely small and is certainly a good digital recorder at a budget price. Beats my older TASCAM DR-07 in almost all measures. The DR-07 user I/F is easier to use and it's battery life is better. (both suffer from mechanical handing noise and need care when using the built-in mic).

Best use of H1 is with an external mic. It great with a Lav mic, just slip it in a pocket and hide the wire.

I logged 10+ hrs of recording time on a standard 1900 mAhr Eneloop battery in an endurance test (record till card is full, erase card, repeat until low battery warning). Some people have reported high battery drain when not in use. Not my experience. In a separate test with the same Eneloop (fully charged) I logged ~7.5 days idle time (except for daily turn on to check battery status) before getting the low battery warning. So for me, no need to remove the battery routinely except when the unit worn't be used for a while.

All-in-all, I'm very pleased with the H1.

Good things DO come in small packages

Comments about H1 Ultra-Portable Digital Audio Recorder (Blue):

I am pleasantly surprised at how good the audio recording quality the H1 has given its budget price. As other reviewers have commented, the H1 picks up handling noise quite readily, so it's not too useful as a hand held microphone/recorder. Use with an external mic to eliminate the handling noise or use a shock mount suspension.

I get 10 hrs of recording time on a single standard (1900 mAhr) Eneloop battery, and over a week of standby (off) battery life on that same battery.

All in all, a great tool.
