So you are probably like me, sorting products by price - low to high and you found the H1 right there at the top. Your next question will probably be if going cheap will take you all the way to heavenly field recordings. Then you start imagining what the size will allow you to do. It fits nicely in your pocket and is light enough that you can actually keep it in your shirt pocket. At least these were some of the things I wondered about before getting mine.

First of all, anyone who ever thought of getting one of those voice recorders - you should all get this one, because it gives you superior sound quality and is just as small. Having said that, depending on what you plan to record, you might want to compare the sound quality with other products. I use mine mostly for voice recordings, field recordings for music and to record rehearsals and concerts. As I just mentioned, voice recordings come out perfect and a conversation with several people in a big room, such as a conference room or even a lecture hall is no problem. For my field recordings, the H1 does indeed lack some detail, especially in the higher frequencies, slightly altering the sense of room space, transparency, depth and distance, both indoors and outdoors. But the noise level is very low, which allows you to do more detailed work on the recordings on the computer. Rehearsals at very high volume do sound a bit compressed and distorted and obviously you are going to lose dynamics and clarity, but it still does a pretty good job of separating highs, mids and lows, leaving you with a fairly accurate description of what was actually going on during the recording.

What I really don't like is the clicking sound that seems to be impossible to avoid at the beginning and the end of each recording. This forces you to edit every single file by hand, regardless of how the actual recording came out.

What I do like is the size versus sound quality and the price. It really leaves you no excuse to not bring it with you to record any sound that you might encounter during a day. This kind of flexibility, at least for me, almost always leads to more creativity. Although be careful with recording sounds close to a police officer, it does look a lot like a taser.

I'd had my eye on smaller solid state recorder for a little while when this came on the horizon, the other main contenders were Sony IC internal memory units. H1 won over on paper with the better mics and recording to card instead of internal memory.

As many others have mentioned, the wind noise is very very sensitive. I wouldn't ever have the small windsock off unless it was really safe indoors. The mics already bulge out of the top of the unit so a windsock and certainly a windjammer add significant size to the unit. All this leads to more 'poking out of your pocket; rather than pocket sized recorder. This makes me think how the H2 is in many ways more suited to the 'pocket sized' tag as its pop filter mesh handles light breeze well and the whole unit is a rectangle.

Also the "cheap plastic" feel which has been well covered is pretty accurate. But it feels like an AV remote, not a phone or something solid. The main impact of this apart from peoples 'quality perception' is that it makes handling noise really sensitive as the plastic case creaks into the mics.

In the first few weeks of use ive had the flimsy card door dislodge and get lost, lost one recording which didn't save, juggled a few outdoor interviews trying to block the wind with my or the interviewees bodies and only drop it a couple of times (should attach a strap soon)

The sony IC recorders still win out for the minimalists as they are significantly slimmer + small, have their own slide out USB plug and charge a single battery thru that plug. Poor metering though. Important considerations for a cycle touring sound ethnographer / field recordist - but this unit is very decent. Just don't believe the ipod style "this is the new very best thing, in the smallest package for the cheapest price" spiels! enjoy.

Comments about H1 Ultra-Portable Digital Audio Recorder (Blue):

I am very happy with the Zoom H1 . It is an updated version of the Zoom Handy Recorder H2 (which I have happily used for almost eight years). Much easier to operate with one touch recording and external mic. The accessories are a must if you want to upload tracks to a computer.
I hope to get at least another eight years out if this recorder. We shall see....

This little recorder is very useful replacing a wireless mic at 20% of the cost. Recording quality is excellent. The external mic input enables a Lap mic to be used very effectively. I have three of them and use them for my video interviews.

Awesome mic, well worth the price

Comments about H1 Ultra-Portable Digital Audio Recorder (Blue):

After my USB condenser mic broke I wanted a mic that was more portable. Something I could just take with me on the road for shoots and also something that could plug into my camera. The Zoom H1 is almost perfect. It's small, portable and the audio that I get from it is really clean I didn't have to do any post production edits on some shots. Only thing I'd want out of this is if was a cardioid directional mic. For my purposes I'd love to get less environmental noise and have it just focus on my voice. But for the price it is well worth it!!

Practical but Sensitive

By Ancient videographer

Comments about H1 Ultra-Portable Digital Audio Recorder (Blue):

I got the recorder to replace my wireless microphone for video production. I produce documentary videos and I needed to be as unencumbered as possible. When recording on auto the mic tends to be very sensitive in high noise situations. This requires switching to manual recording settings to enhance Voice interviews using the microphone up close to reduce background ambient sound. It also requires manual settings when using the recorder for line recording. Its small size allows carrying it in a pocket. The cover over the memory card is really cheesy. For the price and for the intended use as long as you pay attention it works really well.

Turns off when the record button is pressed

By Harlan

Comments about H1 Ultra-Portable Digital Audio Recorder (Blue):

The product is very worrisome because it turns off when the record button is pressed. I've made successful recordings from it into my lavalier mic. But I have found that if I leave the item on for a few minutes without recording anything, then press the record button, it immediately shuts off right when the button is pressed. I've done searches online about this and have not come up with an answer as to why this happens.

Nice little recorder (for the money)

By Mark K.

Comments about H1 Ultra-Portable Digital Audio Recorder (Blue):

I bought this recorder to do "man on the street" interviews for a podcast and it is perfect for my purposes. It is small enough that I can have it in my hand and approach people without them knowing that I have a microphone. It is very sensitive to contact and wind noise, so you'll need to invest in a wind screen and possibly a shock mount. It's easy to use and sounds great.

My second Zoom H1, to go along with its big brother, the H4n. Dependable, easy to use, super lightweight and fabulous sound from a little recorder that will take a lav mic and hide discreetly just about anywhere. Perfect for low budget recording and filmmaking.

I use this to record the output of the mixing console when video recording events and I have always been satisfied with the results.

The audio quality is excellent, and provides great options.

The only down side is that it accepts a maximum of 32Gig memory cards.

Comments about H1 Ultra-Portable Digital Audio Recorder (Blue):

This is an excellent addition to the ZOOM line. It is lightweight, easy to use with one button recording, and the WAV files are of excellent quality. Even if you have one of the larger ZOOMS or the video recorder, this is an ideal device to put in your pocket and take to recitals, school productions, and so forth. Highly recommended.

Great pocket-size recorder

Comments about H1 Ultra-Portable Digital Audio Recorder (Blue):

I'm using this recorder for a few different things. One, ambient noise, I Shoot some documentary type style shorts like to have a recorder with me for the odd ambient noise that surrounds us. Two, type conversations in small rooms are out and about it's find have the recorder close because it doesn't look like much. Definitely buy a windscreen for it it always helps. Three, personal notes this is great for that.

Handy and Compact

By ParksHere

Comments about H1 Ultra-Portable Digital Audio Recorder (Blue):

I had the need to capture some off camera audio and took advantage of a discounted price for the H1.
Put it to use almost immediately and am fairly happy with the purchase. Worked as needed and the layout or the buttons and screen interface were very intuitive, was able to get what I needed set up without even referencing the manual.

Only thing keeping me from giving it five stars was the build quality in one are. The micrSD card slot is small piece of plastic/rubber that is attached by only one very small rubber hinge. It hasn't broken off yet but with some use you can count on it coming undone. Nothing some gaffers tape wont fix when that happens but it does point to a flaw in the design.
