I purchased this chart to assist with testing lens sharpness and possible issues with lens decentering (good article on lensrentals.com on using this type chart for testing purposes, in particular, testing for lens decentering issues). One of the triggers for my purchase was that I just had a lens repaired, and when it initially came back from the repair shop, I was getting what appeared to be soft images. I used the chart to help confirm my observations and sent the lens back to the repair facility with copies of images demonstrating the softness. The manufacturer did additional repairs and readjusted the lens (at no additional charge) and my lens now appears to appears to be working well now.

The one thing missing (and perhaps it was just my copy) was instructions for use. There is verbiage on the chart itself that says to "please note the instructions for using this test chart", however there were no instructions included with the chart. After a brief google search I was able to locate a manual on the Zeiss.com website which referenced the star chart and, in the back pages of that manual, contained references to appropriate testing distances for various Zeiss lenses based on focal length. I was also able to find several articles at various internet photo sites on the topic of lens testing and appropriate processes and distances for testing.

The chart itself It is plastic laminated, so it should be durable, and it comes in a relatively stiff cardboard envelope so I can keep it protected when not in use

Bottom line - I find the chart is a useful tool and a good investment for me, and I would recommend this for other photo enthusiasts like me.

Does what it should

It does what it should, it's definitely pretty pricey, but I guess the peace of mind knowing it's standard helps justify the price.

The chart works, but other methods may be easier.

Comments about Zeiss Siemens Star Test Chart:

I bought this to test my two Rokinon lenses to see if they were decentered. It's useful, but it seems to be easier to just get a tripod set up, and point the camera at a well-lit brick wall, tile floor, or any surface that has a wide surface with a repeating pattern, take a few pictures, and then look for areas that are out of focus in the pictures. My star chart did not come with instructions, so I had to look up the procedure online. Lensrentals, and Photographylife both had good instructions for using the chart.

Bought this to use it for testing lens elements that are not aligned properly. I bought a Zeiss zoom lens that have iffy reviews do to poor lens alignment and decided to purchase the Star Test Chart to complete a quick test. Everything looked good the entire zoom range. Sharpness tests confirmed that it looked good edge to edge. Good to have another tool for testing and the price was right.

Comments about Zeiss Siemens Star Test Chart:

It does all that you ever hoped or wished a siemens star did. Clear and simple to use. I only gave it 4 stars b/c when you pay this much for something, you kind of want it to come with a solid folder or something that will hold up to production. An X-Rite has a ziplock, as well as a cardboard folder...also, the size is just a little bigger than you can take comfortably in a production bag. The star doesn't need to be smaller, but if the area around it was smaller, maybe it would tuck in nicely next to the x-rite and/or my slate. (note: this is not a bad price, it's not bad at all, but you expect it to hold up to production...I keep this more on my wall at home than use in the field, even though I'd like a good siemens star in the the field sometimes).

A test chart is not the most exciting item to order from the BH catalog but it is useful for testing new lenses for decentering, a problem that is not always immediately obvious. Roger Cicala detailed this in a blog post a while ago.

As a side note, kudos to BH for packing the chart super well. It arrived in perfect condition.

I am considering of purchasing a Mirrorless or so called Compact System Camera during this upcoming holiday season for my planned trips next year. Part of it is for serving as back up to the DSLR, and for areas need longer hiking, it will serve as the primary/only camera that I will pack. I am at this moment contemplating Sony E-Mount and Fujifilm X-System, unfortunately both brand have some lens centering issues on some samples. I discovered this chart by coming across the method of determining if a lens has centering issue on the website of Lens Rentals. I figured only if I can find out if a lens has such issue within return/exchange period I can address it accordingly and this serves the purpose

If you're looking for a Siemens Star, this is it. The chart is sturdy and laminated with a matte plastic coating with hang holes at the top. It will last a long time. Printed detail is (obviously) extremely fine/small. The star itself is fairly large, probably around 10" round.

Comments about Zeiss Siemens Star Test Chart:

It's the best chart I've ever seen for focusing a lens. The very high detail in the center makes it easy to see when a lens is sharp. But it would be nice if they included some extra things, like framing / color charts on the back, so I don't have to carry around 2 items.

Charts can be very expensive but these are great for the cost. This should be all you need to check focus (definitely a must if you are changing mounts on your CP2s)
