I recently purchased this Sigma lens because a friend of mine asked me to take her daughters senior pictures. I have NEVER been asked to do such an important job before because I'm basically a soccer mom photographer, taking photos to use for our end of year banquet slide show and so other kids could have some action shots of themselves. But I thought what the heck, I'll give it a shot (and Seriously had stressed over it!!!). I had been researching portrait lenses previously because I've been trying to UP my photography game and get back into it (because I got a degree in photography a million years ago and never kept up with it!) I guess you could say I'm a better than average non-professional photographer mostly photographing pictures of my kids, dogs and family the past 15 years. Deciding I would take the challenge and shoot my friends daughters senior photos, it seemed the 85 2.8 portrait lens was the way to go, but deciding on which one to get was another thing. I have a couple of good, expensive Nikon brand lenses, but just wasn't sure I could shell out the extra $ when I could get the equivalent Sigma 85mm. After talking to a VERY knowledgeable B&H employee for 45 minutes for my whole commute home, he told me the Sigma was actually superior to the Nikon for several reasons (which I can't remember!) and seeing as I don't make a living doing photography, it seemed like a no-brainer. He was able to place my order for the Sigma 85mm right then and there, as well as suggest the best filter, and everything was delivered the next day by 10:30 am!. He even game me some shooting tips. I used the lens for my shoot and it worked great! The photos came out better than I had expected and I'm very happy with my purchase. I have to say B&H customer service ROCKS - you can't go wrong!

purchased jan 2011. after only light use autofocus motor failed in June. returned to sigma and it was rapidly repaired, back with me in less than a week. now focuses fast and sharp again, but early failure is a concern. would probable wait for nikon 85 AF-S if to do over as have not had this issue with any of the nikon lenses

So Sweet

Comments about Sigma 85mm f/1.4 EX DG HSM Lens For Nikon Digital SLR Cameras:

I'm in love with this lens, is that wrong? I try to not shed sweet tears of joy when I look at the back of my camera after each shot.
I did a lot of research between getting this and the Nikon, but the $1000 difference and the good reviews made me go with the Sigma. It's really a beautiful well-made lens. I'm sure the Nikon might be a hair sharper, but I know I'm likely the only one viewing my photos at 100+%. Anyway, get it. Do it.

Comments about Sigma 85mm f/1.4 EX DG HSM Lens For Nikon Digital SLR Cameras:

This lens will take some getting used to when shooting wide open. You have to really know your focus point, but used well this lens produces beautiful soft depth of field and bokeh. I have not experienced any focus issues yet as some reviewers have stated, but I have not used it in very low light yet. That will remain to be seen. But overall, just a beautiful piece of glass, and at half the price of the Nikon version, it's well worth it.

Its ok, I wanted to be wowed with the got to have this lens everyone talks about. It has a lot of trouble focusing in low light. I had a lot of trouble getting the right settings during a wedding last week. I kept taking it off and putting my 50mm back on.

          - This lens is tack sharp, quick focus. I compared it with Nikon 85mm f1.4 side by side, as sharp, as good for 2/3 of the money, I would say it is slightly sharper in the center. This lens just basically add magic to your photos. LOVE IT LOVE IT LOVE IT. Thanks B&H for great customer service

Comments about Sigma 85mm f/1.4 EX DG HSM Lens For Nikon Digital SLR Cameras:

This is probably the best value 85mm f/1.4 for Nikon shooters. I shoot in low light a lot, so large apertures are important to me. I've only owned Nikon lenses before this, and it took a lot for me to actually purchase this lens. So far, it performs better than expected; I rented one to compare with the Nikon 85 f/1.4G, and the difference was imperceptible. I'm especially happy because the one I purchased actually seems sharper than the one I rented. And no AF fine-tuning was necessary for my copy. I wanted to wait and see if Sigma would come out with an Art version of this lens, but the new Art lenses have been larger and heavier than their predecessors, and I'm not interested in heavier gear. The quality I get out of this version is more than I need. Not only is this the best value, in my opinion, but it is just about the best quality you can get. For the price, it was a no-brainer for me.

                  Best Uses

Comments about Sigma 85mm f/1.4 EX DG HSM Lens For Nikon Digital SLR Cameras:

My goal: Bought this for portraits mainly and (yes) landscape too

                    Pros:
                    1) bokeh is very pleasing, no-not like film, but like...well...digital (no, really, it's fine, it's great ok?)
                    2) AF is fast in anything brighter than very dim light
                    3) it's really pretty solid (of course, it's a prime, and from Sigma's EX line
                    4) I believe it has out-resolved my 16MP D7000, which of course was the goal

                    Cons:
                    1) as far as color rendition, I'm not sure that colors are as good as other portrait lenses, but having little experience with the other portrait lenses, I'm still confident that I can get the results I want, but you understand what I mean (I bought this as an alternative to the higher quality, pricier portrait lenses
                    2) there is some (relatively minor) CA wide open so be careful about that

                    Conclusion:
I'm really glad I invested in this lens and would recommend it to all but the most discerning artists. I say this because I have not pushed this lens too hard yet, so I don't know. But IMHO, I have an eye for realism. (As far as that goes, my camera is really the limiting factor due to its limited dynamic range. The lens is fine.) But this is still a limited review. Do I still want the old 105 or 135mm f/2 DC? See my above comment. If I can get this lens to disappoint me, then...

So far IT HAS NOT DISAPPOINTED me for the price. IF YOU NEED A LENS WITH THESE SPECIFICATIONS, YOU DON"T HAVE TO WORRY ABOUT BUILD QUALITY, unless you just need a "heavy duty" metal lens. It's plenty tough for me.
I am thinking of getting an extension tube to expand the capabilities of this lens. Note: I have not used any filters with it yet, but looking forward to a ND for outdoor portraits.

Thanks for reading the really long review.

I bought this primarily for indoor sporting events (i.e., volleyball, basketball) where the lighting can be poor and you are close to the action. I shoot primarily with a Nikon D600. The only complaint is the focus is a little slower than I had hoped for, but it certainly helps with dim lighting that one sometimes finds in gyms. Slow focus means more out of focus shots. Still I get plenty of good shots, so I am pleased overall.

Comments about Sigma 85mm f/1.4 EX DG HSM Lens For Nikon Digital SLR Cameras:

I am a professional photographer and gallery owner on the Oregon Coast. Like many of you I had read the many negatives from disappointed buyers of this lens as to autofocus issues. And I had the same unfortunate experience with the 50mm f/1.4 that many had had - significant front-focusing at the larger apertures and closer distances. I returned it and decided that the 85mm focal length suited me better, and so with considerable trepidation went ahead and ordered it. When it arrived, in a minute I was putting it through some careful autofocus tests, all of which it passed brilliantly! What a relief and a reassurance that it is possible to get a cood copy. I don't think a buyer should have to jump through hoops returning an item multiple times or having it calibrated - it should work properly straight off. At any rate I look forward to applying this classic and specialized portrait lens to portraits of the landscape and natural history and hope that it will elicit a fresh approach and some original creativity on my part. The separation and bokeh are admirable. I'm also using extension tubes and the focus has remained accurate in this "macro" mode. Hey, an f/1.4 macro! Oh and I gave it four stars simply because I don't believe in giving any product a perfect score. Is there such a thing as a perfect lens? For example the focus ring on this one is nowhere close to the buttery, liquid feel of lenses of yore. I'm happy tho' and hope to produce some good things with it.

This lens is very similar to the Nikkor knes but at much lower prices! So this is great!
