I tried to buy this A55VL since it was launched at [...] in September but no shops had this one in stock.[...]I learned how to use this camera with the manual and many review pages on the internet and this one has plenty amount of features that can help me shot many different situations easily. I can raise ISO setting more than 3200 to have 1/30s shutter speed in the dark place and the noise of picture is really small. If I need ISO6400 or more, the multi-shot noise reduction can help me to get a picture with unnoticeable noises even with moving persons or objects. Also sweep panorama makes simple and good panorama picture without difficulty like using Adobe Photoshop. I enjoyed this one when I visited the Universal Studio and Getty center in LA. Now I have a great background image for my 30 inch desktop monitor. Another good function is 10 burst shot mode. You can take 10 pictures in one second and keep going. Even though it has full HD video recording, with this burst mode you may have funny series of movements or one good focused picture for your fast running children. To fully use above functons(sweep panorama, multi-shot noise reduction, 10 burst mode and full HD movie), you may need a fast memory. I'm using PNY class 10 SDHC 8GB memory and this is fast enough and cheaper than Sandisk extreme series.

I take photos every day. I had a Nikon D50 for half a decade, which I loved, as I did the other Nikons (non-digital) that I owned in the past. The camera got damaged and I decided to get a new one, since I take photos almost daily as an amateur photographer. I decided to get a camera that also has HD video capability. I was convinced by the BH salesperson to buy Sony's SLT A55. It was the first time in my life I diverged from Nikons. I regret it, and I plan to return the Sony A55 and exchange it for a Nikon D5100 or D7000. Here's why. The A55's fast-focusing is great for video. So if you are mostly interested in video this is a camera to get. But if that's the case, why buy a still-photo camera and not a video recorder that can do a better job? The image quality of the A55's still photos is far inferior to any I've taken with my Nikons. I even took the same shots side by side with the Sony STL A55 and my damaged Nikon D50. The Nikon's results were far superior. The depth of color, texture, and detail are far better with the Nikon. True, the Sony A55 has some features, like panorama shots, that you can't get with the Nikon's I've used. It also has built-in GPS, which I like and I wish it would be incorporated in the new Nikons. But these advantages don't outweigh the camera's main job (as far as I am concerned): great quality still photos. Two other things. The Sony A55 electronic viewfinder is terrible compared to the optical viewfinder of the Nikons. And I am used to and like using the viewfinder, not just the LCD screen (which, by the way, you can find in the Nikon D5100 too, a point that the BH salesperson never explained to me). The Sony A55's battery life it bad too; it's about half that of the Nikon's. You need to have a second battery if you plan to do an entire day of shooting, which I did a couple of times in the last two weeks since I purchased the Sony camera.
In summary, the Sony STL A55 is good for video and if you like a camera around $1,000 that can shoot 10 fps. But, if you, like me, are more interested in great quality photos and can settle for lesser quality video and 3-4 fps then get the Nikon D5100 for about the same price. That's what I plan to do. A. M.

Comments about Sony Alpha DSLR-SLT-A55 Digital Camera W/18-55mm Lens:

The camera is very easy to use. The panoramic shots are great although they do loose a bit of clarity compared to a normal photo.

The battery has a bi of a short life, but overall a very easy camera to use.

Comments about Sony Alpha DSLR-SLT-A55 Digital Camera W/18-55mm Lens:

I must start by saying I was very skeptical about getting a Sony, having only owned 35mm Nikon and Pentax cameras. It was difficult for me to get past the brand, but after some research, I went for it. I've had some good and bad experiences with this camera. I was very aggravated with the battery life, so I got a spare and I'm getting used to it. Just remember to charge up. It was also difficult to get used to an electronic view-finder. It's more of a problem when focusing manually- I prefer to see the real thing instead of another LCD screen because it's not as clear, but it has its advantages. For instance, it comes in handy in play-back mode in bright light situations when it's difficult to see the large LCD. There is also an over-heating issue with the video when you get up to about 5 or more minutes, but the quality is good and I rarely need a longer video so that doesn't bother me- I mostly shoot in the manual mode and like all the options I have. The best feature is seeing the effects of every adjustment in the live view before the photo is taken. I bought it for its low-light capabilities and am pretty happy with its performance. I don't need 10 frames per second too often, but it's not bad to have on hand. The longer I own the camera, the more I like it. I may not sound extremely enthusiastic, but I am happy overall.

I am an amateur photographer, therefore I don't know too much. I do know that this takes great pictures. I think that it is great that it works with my old lenses from my minolta slr 35mm. I definitely recommend this camera. It is by far the best I have had.

This is a very good camera. I have a 4 year old autistic daughter that doesn't make good eye contact so when I turn it on to 10 fps, I can actually get one of her looking and smiling at me. I love that. The image quality is pretty good and the colors are okay. It takes very good pics in low light as well on the 10 fps.

Comments about Sony Alpha DSLR-SLT-A55 Digital Camera W/18-55mm Lens:

This is my first DSLR. I want a camera that takes beautiful pictures, quickly! I physically compared the Sony A55 with the Nikon 5100 and Canon T3i all at the same time. I read reviews that say these 3 cameras we're the top 3 in the entry level DSLP class. I bought the Sony because it focused MUCH faster and took better pictures, in my opinion, than the other two. I felt like I was getting good pictures inside the store with the Sony camera without even trying! That's the camera I was looking for.

Comments about Sony Alpha DSLR-SLT-A55 Digital Camera W/18-55mm Lens:

I have used the A55 for almost a year now. I must say that it is my first DSLR purchase after about a 2-3 month research punt into the purchase. The runner up was Canon T3i which one of my friends had. They thought that the Sony A55 was not a serious DSLR because of the LCD viewfinder saying that I would never learn how to properly set proper exposure and shutter speed settings in manual or how to properly compose a shot. Well the conclusion was that after a year not only do I have a better understanding of manual settings (because I can observe their effect in real time through the viewfinder) but my composing had less of a learning curve because of advanced tech inside the camera such as internal stabilization, grid overlay and fine focus which can only be achieved with live view to a desired level.

That said, a minus is its overheating sensor if you are in movie mode with stabilization turned on for more than 3 minutes in my testing environment of room temperature.

Overall it is the future of DSLR's to come I am very exited about the new A77 to which I am planing on upgrading! The A55 is definitely on of a kind. I would never go with an optical viewfinder because I consider that an obsolete technology and I personally have nothing against Canon, Nikon or Pentax.

I was looking more than just a point-&-shoot but was less bulky than the usual DSLR. This camera fits the bill.
Takes nice pictures and is easy to use. The camera can take multiple shots quickly if you use the faster (6) SD card. The panorama feature was easy to use, I could do it right away. I did get a temp warning once while shooting video in HD. Waiting to see if it happens again.

Comments about Sony Alpha DSLR-SLT-A55 Digital Camera W/18-55mm Lens:

This is the first dslr camera we purchased and it was great. A little to confusing and overwhelming at first but Sony puts all explanations on the lcd screen making it easy to learn.

Comments about Sony Alpha DSLR-SLT-A55 Digital Camera W/18-55mm Lens:

I am an amateur photographer who just switched from a point & shoot to DSLR. I love this camera! I have mostly used it to take pictures of my kids playing sports and at school. The number of pictures the camera takes is astounding! And I thought that only some would come in clear, but 99% of them do! The camera has been pretty easy to figure out for mhy purposes. You definitely need a zoom lens in order to take advantage of the speed of the camera.
I had considered the Canon T2i because I love the pictures that my old Canon P&S produced, but am totally satisfied with my purchase of the Sony.

Comments about Sony Alpha DSLR-SLT-A55 Digital Camera W/18-55mm Lens:

I have been a serious photographer for more than 40 years. This is the easiest to use camera I have ever owned. I enjoy doing all the technical settings myself, but my wife and I put the camera and flash on full auto at a family wedding. Out of nearly 500 images, nearly all were great, and we were free to concentrate on capturing the moment. There is no longer an urgency for me to learn all of the possible settings on this camera. It is a pretty smart camera without my help!

Comments about Sony Alpha DSLR-SLT-A55 Digital Camera W/18-55mm Lens:

i used the camera for a week it was OK on pics and the autofocus for the video is amazing. One problem however, the A55 started to over heat as i was shooting a game outside with my 55-200mm lens on a pretty sunny day. i had to turn the camera off for about 5 minutes then it worked fine for about 30mins befor over heating again. and battery life should be improved. so i returned it n got myself a canon T3i its so far so good!
