Let me start by saying the only reason this isn't a 5 star review is because of the price, and I've found in life (especially with photo products) if that's your only complaint it's probably worth saving for... I had a canon 100-400 a few years ago when I switch to nikon. Nikon doesn't have anything similar (their 80-400 is terrible) so I went with their 70-300 VR and was impressed with the value. I also realized I really liked the size and weight and range of the lens for a FF camera for the tele work I do. When I switched back to canon, I got a 7D with the 70-300IS when they had a rebate option. That lens is terrible thanks to it's build and the fact the front element rotates. I then got a tamron 70-300VC as soon as they were available. It's a wonderful budget zoom, much better than the canon version (non L) but after a year of use the zoom ring and focus rings broke. This was in the middle of a sunrise shoot causing me to miss a pretty epic shot. It's since been fixed, but it made me realize if I can't trust a lens in the field it needs to be replaced. So I ordered this lens as soon as I got home. Wow, it's rock solid. Yes it's slightly bigger, but it's built like a tank. It feels much better than the push/pull 100-400. It's also sealed better and has better IS. Not the the 100-400 wasn't sharp, but this feels sharper. I'm very impressed with it. My biggest complaint is the cost followed by the fact canon thinks we should pay another [$]for the tripod colar (that they give you with the 100-400 and 70-200 2.8s). The added weight is also a bit of a bummer, but it's not a deal breaker and it does make for a nice solid setup when shooting. The zoom lock is covered by the hood when it's reversed though. Not the end of the world, but when you're putting it away you have to switch the switch before mounting the hood reversed.

The sharpness compared to the gold lens is remarkable. The only regret is that it is slow.
I do sports indoors and at night.. I constantly need to shoot at 6400 or H and get grain with my 7D.. Wish I got the faster lens.. or the 70-200 f2.8...
For portraits you will want to reshoot all your old stuff (if it was possible). Be careful, will get paper-cuts from the sharpness. j/k

Great lens!!!

Comments about Canon EF 70-300mm f/4-5.6L IS USM Lens:

I just received this lens yesterday and have been testing it out on items I've taken photos of around our home, mostly flowers and birds. I also have a number of L lenses, including a 400mm L f5.6 lens. I've used all these Canon lenses to take flower and bird photos and all are great. My issue was that I had sold a 75-300mm IS EF lens because I felt it wasn't sharp enough compared to the L lenses. But, I missed having that lens to take when hiking or walking around, so I bought this lens and after just a little over 24 hours, boy am I glad I did. The shots I've taken compare favorable for sharpness to any of my other lenses and it may be the fastest for focusing. I use a 7D so the 300mm is like 480mm. I'll still use the 400mm, but it's sometimes a pain to have to drag out the tripod. With this lens, there is a lot of cropping even when a small bird, like a bluebird, is only 20' away. Overall, I knew what I was getting and this lens fulfilled all the check boxes.

Falling in love with photography, again

Comments about Canon EF 70-300mm f/4-5.6L IS USM Lens:

I am an amateur interested in photography since I was 10 year old.  For work related issues, somehow I lost the touch and was in hiatus for 2-3 years.  Recently I bought a 6D and 24-105 L and started taking pictures again.  I was missing a macro - so I bought a Tokina 100 mm.  But there was not enough reach!  After doing a lot of research, I bought this. And boy!  This is the sharpest and most beautiful lens I have used so far.  You can use it for portait, supermoon, landscape, wildlife - anything!  The images are pretty sharp at 5.6 @5.6 but I usually crank up the ISO in 6D, because I can, and shoot at a smaller aperture.  I am absolutely in love with this lens and have not used my 24-105 in a while.  The hood is pretty well.  I know the tripod collar is not included but the weight grows on you and I have never used it except for taking pictures of night sky.  The focusing ring complain is bogus!  Learn to be flexible or once you learn this way, you won't use anything else!  The only concern or I have is this - I wish it could be be used with 1.4X 2.0X but alas it is not compatible.  In a crop camera it gives you up to 480 mm range but not in my 6D!

Can't think of any reason not like it

Comments about Canon EF 70-300mm f/4-5.6L IS USM Lens:

I have to echo the other comments about sharpness.  This is a lovely lens and properly exposed, shake-free images are very sharp out of the camera.  I use this as my "long" lens for cultural vacations and it does a pretty good job of this though it's a little short for bird photography if I get a morning out to myself.

BTW, the specs on the B&H site are wrong.  The length fully collapsed with lens caps is about 17cm (it's sitting on my desk), quite different from the published specs on B&H.  Beware, I almost bought a lens case that's too short for the lens.

Comments about Canon EF 70-300mm f/4-5.6L IS USM Lens:

I wasn't sure about this lens. Like most people I thought "What's the point of this lens, you either have the cheaper 70-300 or you have a 70-200 f2.8L" and you know what!?! I was immediately proven wrong the second I put this on my 5DMK3. Sharpest Zoom lens I think I have ever used. It's size makes it an awesome addition to any landscape photographers bag as it is the size of the old 24-70L roughly.

I absolutely recommend this lens!

Great lens. Use it for indoor and outdoor sports on a Canon 7D Mark II. Like the 10 fps for baseball batter and the basket ball swish. Heavy but I expected that.

Comments about Canon EF 70-300mm f/4-5.6L IS USM Lens:

I first wasn't sure if I should buy this lens or the 100-400 L lens. I went for this lens since the range was what I needed. I took this lens out to sea world and Busch Gardens to test out its autofocus and overall quality and it passed with flying colors. The autofocus is not amazing but it is fast, the lens is built to last and honestly after the first hours with this guy I was in awe. This replaced a sigma 70-300 that I had for about 3 years, hopefully this one will last longer.

This lens is perfect for my use as a wildlife photographer. It has quick AF and produces tack-sharp images. Fits well in my bag and is easy to carry on my second camera. If you do your part with proper settings, this lens will do the rest. Love it!

Comments about Canon EF 70-300mm f/4-5.6L IS USM Lens:

Great lens. Much prefer to the 70-200mm f/4 IS L that I had in the past due to it's longer reach. Typical L quality. Smooth action for zoom and focus. Very solid, quality feel. Its short, squat dimensions provide excellent balance as well as allow it to fit in most camera bags. Images are tack sharp across the board with very accurate color. It makes a wonderful companion for my 5D Mark IV. I also use it with a 7D when I need a bit longer reach. I shoot a wide variety of subjects with a concentration on landscapes and wildlife. The lens makes a more than passable macro lens as well. A faster lens might be nice, but I was not willing to deal with the added weight and size that a 2.8 lens would have. Very versatile! I gave it 4 instead of 5 stars because the tripod mount ring should have been included for the price, I much prefer the focus ring to be in front of the zoom ring rather than the other way around, and it is not compatible with the 1.4x or 2x Canon extenders.

Besides the price and it being a bit heavy the lens is exceptional. The build quality and the sharpness of the pictures are what I would expect from a Canon L series lens. Overall I am very pleased with the purchase

Great, versatile lens

Comments about Canon EF 70-300mm f/4-5.6L IS USM Lens:

I did a lot of research on telephoto zoom lenses in the 70-300 / 70-200 / and 100-400 range and decided on this lens and am not disappointed. I'm sure the 70-200/2.8 and the new 100-400 are fantastic, but I couldn't justify the extra $700 for my needs (landscape, street photography, portraits, architecture).  If you need to shoot indoor sports, social events in low light situations, or need to extend out to 400mm for certain wildlife, by all means splurge. But this lens is fantastic:

- Great image quality
- Easily my most consisitently sharp lens (also have the 24-105L and Sigma 50mm Art)
- Great bokeh
- Very good Image Stabilization
- Low-light performance with my 6D is good as well.  I'm sure this is where the 70-200 / 2.8 shines, but i just switch to my Sigma 50mm 1.4 in these situations.

After all the research, I landed on this one

By DHTodd

Comments about Canon EF 70-300mm f/4-5.6L IS USM Lens:

I spent so much time researching which telephoto L lens to buy. I agonized over the 70-200 f4 IS L and the 70-300L for what seems like forever. I watched endless youtube videos, and got lost in the depths of online forums and dp review articles. (side note: When I'm not in front of people, I enjoy wildlife and pet photography. I also do classical concert photography in *low light*. I shoot with a Canon 7D mk II) The extra 100mm over the 70-200s really makes the difference. Ok, so why did I make the decision I did? First, size. It is shorter than the 70-200s. Yes, it is heavier , but I tend to be a pretty mobile shooter, taking photos on trails or lugging my camera bag in a car or carrying on a plane across the country. So, size matters for portability for me (size and weight disqualified the 70-200 2.8s, fyi). Then, there's the pesky issue of f5.6 at the long end. How I've mentally dealt with that, and made the decision I did, is that the 70-300L is newer by 4 years than the 70-200 f4 IS. That's 4 years better image stabilization (yes, I know Canon only makes new IS every few years, but the 70-300 is a newer generation than the 70-200 f4 IS, which is what mattered to me), and 4 more years of R&D by Canon. The great IS enables me to bring down that shutter speed enough to brighten up the images even at f5.6. More than that, the reviews say the 70-300 L is sharper than the 70-200 f4 IS. And it is gorgeously sharp across the zoom range. I don't know if its flawed logic, but I basically decided that since the lens is sharper, I am "allowed" to raise my ISO settings a bit more when I'm shooting at the long end, to manufacture a brighter exposure. In short, better IS and greater sharpness give me the tools to overcome the lack of brightness of f5.6 at the long end of this lens. All in all, I opted for the newer, shorter, sharper, better stabilized lens, as opposed to the 70-200 f4 IS, and I am happy with my decision.
