Most of my photos are shot during my almost daily nature walks. They are mainly of wildlife, plants, and landscapes. Occasionally, humans or pets wander into the frame. Up to now, my go-to lens has been my Canon 100-400mm zoom, mainly to get little birds in distant trees, or big birds on the opposite side of the pond.

I thought a long time before buying this Canon 8-15mm zoom. I wanted a lens to give me truly wide-angle shots with my APS-C sensored Canon 7D. The specifications of this lens and the reputation of the L-series Canon lenses won me over.

This fisheye is just plain fun to use. It renews all sorts of creative energy in me and adds new excitement to my field trips. The lens is very simple to use and only a few basic concepts are necessary to use it to it's fullest. I have the flexibility of making curvy, artsy photos, or more conventional rectangular shots. Post-editing the curvy shots through Adobe Photoshop CS6, I can optionally remove most of the distortion and produce a conventional, rectangular shot with straight edges and a unique perspective at 8mm.

I use the lens without the lens hood, always. In between shooting spots, I put the lens hood and lens cap back on the front for protection while walking. Yes, the lens-cap-to-lens-hood fit is a bit loose. If it ever gets really annoying, I'll just bond the two together with glue. Putting the pair on, and taking them off as a unit, is a fast, simple, quarter-twist operation.

Comments about Canon EF 8-15mm f/4L Fisheye USM Lens:

More of a Niche lens, but extremely impressive for what it does. The full 180 circle are not for every situation, but in the right environment/subject matter these shots are beautiful. Extremely sharp across the frame. Will have you looking for opportunities to use its unique qualities. The only draw back, but it cannot be avoided do to the extreme nature of the lens curvature, is the exposed front element.

Comments about Canon EF 8-15mm f/4L Fisheye USM Lens:

I use this lens for VFX HDR's on set. It's a beautiful, clean fisheye. It gives you a full 180 degree round image. You need to push out to around 12-13 mm before you zoom pass the vignette on a full frame Canon.

That being said, it's way more fun to use on a crop sensor camera as you have the whole range, from 8mm-15mm, to play with.

Comments about Canon EF 8-15mm f/4L Fisheye USM Lens:

We own two of these lenses for special projects that require fisheye lenses. We use them on the RED Epic Dragon and on Sony cameras with Metabones adapters. (Ironically we don't own any Canon cameras). The fact is that we tested every fisheye available on planet Earth and this is simply the sharpest, period. Trust me. Yes, the design of the lens cap is not very tough and a little stupid. Get over it. You don't buy a lens based on the lens cap. Be careful with the lens, it's a fisheye and the outer element is exposed and vulnerable. That's the nature of a fisheye. I can't believe all the people complaining about that. That's how fisheyes are. If you need to put a filter on it, there is a gel filter holder on the back.

Comments about Canon EF 8-15mm f/4L Fisheye USM Lens:

This lens works with both Full Frame Cameras (sensor) and APS-C Cameras. You get the full circle with the full frame sensor but do not with the APS-C sensor. The zoom is really to allow you to work between the different cameras. You have more options with the full frame sensor. There is a designation on the lens for you to know how far you may zoom out with ea type of camera so you do not get any vignetting. I took it on a hike up to the wave in AZ and loved it. I would highly recommend it if you are looking for a fish eye.

I have owned Canon FD and EF 15mm fisheye prime lenses and I love their perspective. To get a zoom that goes from a round image to my old 15mm standbys perspective is just the best. It is very sharp, focuses quickly. I have no complaints and lots of compliments. A very cool lens.

No Lens FLare. Amazing.Kinda not so great lens hood.If used at 15mm on 50d, 70d, etc you can get very wide pictures without distortion. Better to buy this than any single 8mm fisheye for not too much more money. (can use as wide angle not just fisheye)F4 is fast enough for this lens.Have to shoot a lot with it to understand how it works.. flag poles are amazing at 12mm

Comments about Canon EF 8-15mm f/4L Fisheye USM Lens:

            Hi,

bought this lens as an add on to my L lenses I already have.

I like the images coming out of it and the versatility. Image quality good as usual for Canon L series lenses.

As usual it is well build, feels nice. As an owner of the previous EF 15mm f/2.8L lens i like the new feature of circular and full frame images.

A big nitbit is that the circular image does not center exactly in the area of the full frame sensor of my EOS-1D X

With a lens with such a price and a camera with such a price this should be no topic.

Using the lens on my 12 year old EOS-1Ds this is not the case. Clueless

I saw a video on FB of "unleash the power of the fisheye" by Canon...good tips. That was my deciding factor to purchase it. Not one bit sorry. Can't wait to see what I do with it.

It took me months to decide whether or not to buy this lens, because I own a 7D and I knew it wouldn't live up to my expectations of a fish eye lens compared to a full frame camera. But after reading LOTS of reviews, I decided to go for it. And boy am I glad that I did! Some don't like the dark corners in the image when using the 8mm focal length, but I actually like it.Others complained about the cap not being too fit, but it works just fine for me.All in all, I am very satisfied with my purchase and the price is totally worth it!
