Excellent Lens

Comments about Canon EF 400mm f/2.8L IS II USM Lens:

Everyone has a subjective view on these things. I love this lens! It is exactly what one would expect from a top end Canon telephoto. So why the 4 stars and not 5? The price. I know creating an f2.8 400mm lens is a marvel in optical engineering. I know the coatings are cutting edge, and the materials are the best in optical design. But 10k? I back that sentiment up because I also own the 300mm f2.8. It is definitely a touch sharper, and maybe even resolves the same detail when cropped. I love having the extra reach because I often crop the 400mm shots as well, but if you're on the fence I'd heavily consider the 300mm and almost half the price. All that said, I absolutely love this lens. It is a big piece of gear so traveling with it isn't cake and ice cream but the results are worth it. I'd buy it again, because it is essential for my work...I just wish it was 2k less expensive. 8k I could completely justify.

I am a bird photographer and already own the EF 800mm. This lens is as excellent as the EF 400. They are both heavy to carry especially if you are 63 yrs and 5" tall. It is all worth it!! The pictures come out tack sharp.

Comments about Canon EF 400mm f/2.8L IS II USM Lens:

The old 12 pounders are too heavy for my lightweight tripod and gimbal (Gitzo Backpacker and Jobu Jr. 3). For the way I shoot (near and far with one lens), the 600ii has an unacceptably long 4.5m Minimum Focus Distance (MFD). Verses 8.5 lbs and 2.7m MFD, I can handhold for a nearby butterfly and quickly switch to a distant Grizzly! And, the new 4-stop, 3-mode Image Stabilization (IS) is a noticeable improvement over the old 2-stop, 2-mode IS. I use the 2x iii with no noticeable loss in quality on the 50 megapixel 5DsR. I'm getting old, so this will likely be my last big lens purchase, but I do look forward to more megapixels in future cameras to push the limits of this lens.

Comments about Canon EF 400mm f/2.8L IS II USM Lens:

I am a Canon shooter, so I'm a bit biased, but even amongst L-series glass, this lens stands out. I rented it to try and fell in love. It's heavy, but the front piece of glass is the size of a salad plate. The AF is so accurate, it made my 5D Mark III better, and I didn't know that could happen. What really blows you away is the tack-sharp handheld shots you can get.

I used it with and without a 2x, and didn't notice any change in quality. It's just amazing.

Comments about Canon EF 400mm f/2.8L IS II USM Lens:

I have not yet had a chance to put this to it's intended use of wildlife photography up in the Ruby Mountains of Nevada but I have taken it on a few test outings and it is everything I had hoped it would be. It yields sharp, clear, high quality images and works well with Canon's 2x extender. Later in Spring when the snow melts a bit more I am sure to capture some great pictures of the birds and critters that live in this area. Yes, it's both expensive and heavy but for a fast 400mm that goes with the territory.

This beauty is a gemstone in every aspect. As you see, the previous reviews are packed with facts. And it is amazingly light given its power.
To make it complete, also buy:
Canon 52mm Drop-in circular polarizing filter

A minor detail, and only a little minus for the case itself is to be mentioned. It could have been reduced in size by removing the space dedicated for the two teleconverters/extenders.

Comments about Canon EF 400mm f/2.8L IS II USM Lens:

I photograph wildlife and professional cycling. When I went to South Africa in 2010 I rented the older version of 300mm F 2.8. This lens is 400mm but about the same weight and with more functionality built in. The clarity is beyond belief. As the lens is a 2.8 I can use my 2x doubler and the image stabilization and autofucus are still enabled on my 5dmkII. 800mm of clarity for incredible images of birds and wildlife is what I was looking for and exactly what I got. B&H shipped and delivered it promptly and it arrived on time with everything arriving in perfect order. Expensive but worth every penny.

Purchased for Photographing low light sports. The lens is super fast focusing, very sharp and has a super bokeh at f2.8. A real attention getter from onlookers. Still a little on the heavy side (both weight and price) both both to be expected.
                So far I love it!!

Comments about Canon EF 400mm f/2.8L IS II USM Lens:

I've had this lens for a couple of weeks now and actually took vacation time to put it through it's paces. It is my first experience with a Canon big lens and I could immediately tell it was going to take my photography experience to a new level. I scrimped and saved for a couple of years to buy it, but it was worth every sacrifice I made and the time it took. The AF is incredibly fast, and shooting in low light conditions is a treat. At the moment, I'm using a 7D body, but plan to have a 1Dx in another few months. I'm using a Wibley P-50 plate on the foot and it fits in the case a little snug, but really, it is no problem. And the case is as nice as the lens! I'm looking forward to spending a lot of quality time with this lens. Yes, it is a lot of money, in fact I joke with friends that it costs more then the vehicle I currently drive, but for those few times in my life I really wanted something special just for myself, it was worth every penny.

Comments about Canon EF 400mm f/2.8L IS II USM Lens:

If you're browsing this product, reading the reviews, you've probably read many others as well. Well, here's another to tell you it's all true what you've read before. This lens is sharp as anything you'll ever use, distortion-free, aberration-free, solid construction, costly (you practically have to donate one of your organs), heavy and expensive. The last two are relative, yes this thing weighs more than 8 pounds but it's light versus anything that came before it given its specs. Expensive, well yes, but the image quality, construction, stabilization are all better than anything that came before it.

While it might seem crazy, I have only used this lens handheld - I use the shoulder strap and am able to remain quite mobile for many hours without tiring. The images are astounding at every aperture, bokeh to die for, depth of field that is wafer thin, sharp, sharp where you chose it to be. Just a crazy lens.

Recommend getting a lens coat and insurance to protect your investment - it is substantial one! A ThinkTank Street Walker Pro will fit this lens attached to a camera body very nicely (even a 1DX, snug as bug).

Comments about Canon EF 400mm f/2.8L IS II USM Lens:

I tried to hand hold the lens with the 1.4 extender III and couldn't do it. The lens is enormous, and really heavy to hold (8.3 lbs doesn't sound too bad but the weight is concentrated at the front). Get the Wimberley WH200 and enjoy a great lens. Or line up a good chriopractor. The Wimberley foot makes the lens difficult to fit into the enclosed case.

Comments about Canon EF 400mm f/2.8L IS II USM Lens:

The 400mm f2.8L IS was the gold standard for field sports until this version arrived. I'd used the old one for years but the II is better--significantly better. First and foremost is the weight difference. Losing over 3 pounds makes for a huge change in fatigue at the end of a day of moving up and down a sideline. It feels like a slightly bigger 300 rather than a lens twice its weight. This lens is a joy. The bokeh remains legendary.

The performance is also a treat. Granted, there was nothing wrong with the old 400mm version but this iteration is slightly sharper, focuses instantly on a 1D X (or a 1D Mark IV) and very fast with the 1.4x TC III. I never liked using the 1.4x TC II with the previous version due to the slower focusing rate and lower accuracy but now that is not an issue for me. Yes, image quality takes a small hit but is still excellent.

With the change from 1.3 FOVCF to FF on 1 series bodies, I was considering moving to a 500mm or even 600mm f/4.0 lens but this lens gives me f/2.8 when I need it and still allows the longer focal length (560mm equivalent) at f/4.0 with very good quality when mated to the 1.4x TC III. The top notch build quality remains a given in this class of lens.

Mode 3 image stabilization is perfect for sports shooters like me. I'd shut off IS for sports shooting with the earlier version. The performance boost is detectable. Bravo Canon.

The best got better and the weight improvement alone is worth the extra $$ to me.
