Super Lens

Comments about Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 200mm f/2G ED VR II Lens:

When UPS delivered, the carton was put in my hands. My first reaction was "whoa, this can't be right" as the box was quite heavy. When the box was opened I found that there was a 200 f/2.0 inside and it was the source of the weightiness. I also have a Nikon 600 f/4.0 so "substantial" lenses were not new to me. The 200 f/2.0 joins the 600 f/4.0 as super lenses. I don't mean super-telephoto but super in terms of sharpness across the entire field of view. I love the compression that the focal length allows for portraiture. One can control DOF to a fine degree. Bokeh is wonderfully smooth when you open up the aperture. The lens is expensive but this is normal with all products for virtuoso performances as the purchaser is buying the rare points of capability at the high end of the purchasing spectrum.

Bad start, great finish

Comments about Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 200mm f/2G ED VR II Lens:

When I first lifted this lens and brick-like F5 to my face I thought "Oh (darn it), this won't work, way too heavy."
When I first looked through the viewfinder I forgot about the weight. So bright! So steady! I thought "Wow, this really works!"
When I louped the first processed film I found out that VR and f2 is incredible. 4stops-now I believe it. It really works. Usable shots at 1/20 handheld. Unreal! Forget about the weight and get the shot! Five star breakthrough technology.

I was thrilled to buy this lens, but b&h ruined the unboxing revelry by sending a unit that needed a lens cleaning. I sent it back as I had paid for a new lens. I'm ok with this mostly, because the real jerks are you gear borrowers that make reboxing routine. I was furious at b&h but I've forgiven them now that I have my keeper; in fact, I've subsequently bought some street photo voightlander stuff.

Comments about Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 200mm f/2G ED VR II Lens:

I've been a photographer longer than there have been computers.  Sad, but true!!   I've shot a LOT of Leica glass, Zeiss glass, Schneider glass and Nikon glass.  This 200mm f2 glass is amazing.  The lens is heavy.  The lens is thick.  The lens is expensive.  All true.  However, when you are a sharp freak like I am, you want the images to produce what your mind sees.  This lens is incredible.

I have uploaded a sample shot from approximately 12' away. I was using a monopod.  Image shot at f2.  Check out the image and decide for yourself.  Shouldn't be a hard decision except for the $$$.

Superb images with this lens.

Comments about Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 200mm f/2G ED VR II Lens:

I love the pictures from this lens. Its ratings on image quality are about the best of the Nikon lenses. The image clarity and definition on a clear day in the mountains is spectacular. Can't say enough about it.

The polarizer works very well with a dial close to the camera, rather than reaching out to the end of the lens to rotate a traditional polarizer.

I have only used a tripod so far. I am not sure about a monopod, since the lens is heavy and I am worried about it falling, due to my inattention.

It is possible to hand hold shots, but not for very long. Be sure to hold the tripod bracket on the lens and not the camera to avoid damaging the mount on the camera.

I ordered a Cotton Carrier camera vest with a steady shot bracket, but have yet to try it.

I am still a bit nervous about not having an external filter on the lens and not even a lens cover other than the fabric one in the lens case. I may look for some sort of cover that snaps on.

I would recommend this lens to anyone who can afford it.

Comments about Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 200mm f/2G ED VR II Lens:

This lens is as fast and sharp as advertised. We have been using it for portraits, products, weddings and sports. This 200mm F/2 VRII is super fast, very sharp and creates beautiful buttery boken with deep colors. We mostly shoot with prime lenses. The 50mm 1.4 and 85mm 1.4 are great lenses, but the 200mm is at different level. Shooting the VRII @ F/2 will allow you to capture pictures in lower light. We use this lens more than any of the other lenses. It is simply amazing.

Comments about Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 200mm f/2G ED VR II Lens:

Incredibly sharp! It's heavy, built like a Tank. For any more than a couple of quick shots you'll need a monopod or tripod. It's sharp from f/2 - f/22. I agree with other reviews, you'll go out of your way to use this lens. You can make the background disappear into a soft blur of color.
While it is a fantastic portrait lens the focal length will keep you several feet from your subject. Full length portrait in portrait orientation requires about 20 - 25 feet separation from your subject. Headshots are possible in a small studio. Shooting outdoors in full sun is a bit difficult if you are trying to shoot a maximum aperture. The drop in filter with ND or CPL may be a requirement if that's your intention.
The lens hood does a good job of protecting the lens element and I never shoot without it. I'm clumsy.
I swapped the lens foot out with the Benro LP110K. It's longer and Acra Swiss compatible. Makes balancing the lens easier and provides a better handhold for carrying. The lens hood will still reverse.
The lens bag is nice. Rugged and feels like it will protect the lens from most bumps and bangs. I wouldn't want to test it with a drop.
Lastly, this is a lens you buy because you need it for a specific task in your photo business or, you have every other lens you need and can afford to get something you just want.

Comments about Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 200mm f/2G ED VR II Lens:

I don't see how I can pay any higher compliment to a lens than to say I will go out of my way to find ways to use this amazing chunk of metal and glass. Part of what makes this lens so amazing is hard to describe...images come out with a sort of natural color distribution that is pleasing to the eye. It's not overly contrasty or supersaturated with popping colors. It just renders images exactly how you want them to look, and without much work on the photographers end. It's a great match for the D800 or D810, as the sheer resolving power of those cameras is well suited to pulling all of the detail and texture this lens can capture.

This lens shines if you shoot it wide open at f/2. I love how it brings out the subject and melts the background away. There is hardly any noticeable color fringing or vignetting at f/2, and distortion is imperceptible.

It's not light...but I typically use it hand held and have gotten used to its heft. It's a short lens, so that makes it somewhat easier to handle as that tends to mitigate it from being too "front-heavy". Autofocus is very quick and quiet.

I don't shoot weddings, but I'd love the opportunity to see what this lens can do photographing newlyweds under a twilight sun.

This lens really shines when you do portraiture...as I said before, it will really pull the subject out of a dreamy bokeh. It's also great for indoor sports, as you can shoot all day long at f/2 and experience little to no image degradation due to chromatic aberration or distortion. I've used it countless times in hideously lit gyms, and a simple adjust of the white balance in post and the image looks naturally well illuminated.

Yeah, you have to pay a premium for this lens, but in this case, it's more than worth the investment. Obviously, this lens is tank-like in its construction, and I'm quite confident I'll be leaving it to one of my sons as it will outlast me.

I'd recommend this lens to anyone who is willing to drop the significant initial investment to buy it. You will not regret it.

Comments about Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 200mm f/2G ED VR II Lens:

For those of you that are truly considering getting this amazing piece of glass, then you, my dear friend, are about to change everything you have ever done in taking a picture. Should you press the buy button, you will be joining a very rare club of photographers that demand far more than just a nice image. Their is nothing like this lens on the planet...not even the Zeiss Otus's can touch this lens in relation of over all performance. In short, it is a game changer. Before purchasing this lens, it was a toss up between it and the 300 2.8 VR II. I went with that lens first and it truly shines on all levels. I do not have any reservation in recommending the path I took to anyone. The 300 2.8 VR II has it advantages over this lens, and will allow you to do things that make it an outstanding partner to this lens. Hence, if you think getting this lens will some how make the 300 2.8 VR II mute, you are fooling yourself. Both of these lens are made to live together. The performance of this lens will leave you speech less (much like the 300 2.8). If you make the purchase, I would like to welcome you to the club and by all means, don't ever forget your other lenses. They do serve a purpose, even though each time you will think to yourself: "why can I not just have shoot with the 200 f/2?"A few additional items I highly recommend getting: replace the foot, with one that has is Arca Swiss (RRS make the best); get the Lenscoat protector for it; the Don Zeck Lens Cap, and lastly, the CPL from Nikon.

This lens is the "Mohammad Ali" of portraits. I can shoot with it in the middle of NYC Times Square and the background just blurs into a liquid swirl. Your photos will be so sharp they might cut you. The lens is indeed HEAVY and very LARGE! It is definitely not a lens to buy if you want to be inconspicuous.

From what I have experienced so far shooting with this lens I can safely say that it will remain in my possession until the great asteroid hits the Earth and destroys every camera lens on the entire planet.

Comments about Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 200mm f/2G ED VR II Lens:

I have owned almost most of the pro glass that nikon offers. From the holly trinity, 300 2.8 vr , 400 2.8 vr, and this lens is just amazing. Not to heavy for me , I currently own the 400 2.8 vr also, is just out of this world. The focal length for what I used it for is just perfect , and that is for portraits of my 2 year old, to football at high school games. Bokeh is just buttery smooth, the lens wide open is razor sharp, and it takes converters with no problem. Autofocus is on par with my 400 even a bit faster. This lens is a gem. Expensive for most yes ,but worth every penny.

Bought the 200 2 to take pictures of my son's fencing tournament.
As usual, the tournaments are located in high school gymn and/or cafeteria and the lighting is horrible.

The 200 2 comes through beautifully.
          Focus is fast, very sharp.
Th lens handles sport better than the 85 1.4.

A bit on the heavy side so you need a tripod for extended use.

I am used to shooting with the 70-200 2.8, the 80-400 VR, the Sigma 150-500 hand holding. But I cannot handhold the 200 2 for more than 15 minutes.

          Bokeh is incredible.

I wish the lens comes with a lens cap.

The soft pouch is a little bit flimsy for my taste.

I have many of the Best Primes Nikon makes but for whatever reason I thought the 200/2 would fall into that category of lens that spend too much time on the shelf, the uses were too limited.

I was wrong, this has quickly become my favorite lens. So much so that it will be my main lens w/800e
on a trip to see the gorillas next month.

Great lens even with the weight and stubby attitude. I should have bought this one years ago.

I'm not saying anything new when I say this lens is just a phenomenal piece of glass...my god, you read about speed, AF accuracy, btu until you try it, you have no idea what they are talking about. This is in a whole different category than the 14-24 f2.8, and the rest of it. It's everything you heard about and then some. My only cons are the potential for scratches on the front element, you have to leave to hood on, which takes up a lot of space, and the weight. It is a heavy lens, but with the VR II you can shoot hand held no problem. It's the carrying all day that tires you. But it's doable. Once back home and you see the IQ at f2, you realize it was worth it!

Emperor of Bokeh: Nikon 200mm f2. King of Bokeh: Nikon 85mm f1.4 (Either Old or New Versions, new version has less creamy edges but more sharp edges) The Nikon 200mm f2 shots need to be seen so that you can make your own judgements. The focus point is on his nose but his left eye (on rt) is sharpest. The subject just POPS!
