This remote is a MUST for time lapse photos the only limit is the size of the memory card and camera batteries. There are so many settings it is almost limitless. There is a learning curve but it is pretty simple to use and if there are any questions the folks at Vello answer emails quickly. I used this for night time lapse photos in Canyonlands National Park and it worked like a dream. The long exposure setting is great for taking photos of stars since most cameras will only go as far as a 30 second exposure time. Just wish there was a "gadget" bag to hold the 3 parts but that ius not a big deal.

I have had this remote for almost a year now. It worked as advertised up until the last time I used it on the 4th of July. I went to a local fireworks display to photograph the fireworks. I put in a new set of batteries before leaving the house. My camera was on the tripod, set to manual, and I focused on the bridge that would be behind the fireworks display. I then set the lens to Manual focus to hold my focus, set apeture to F8, and set both the camera and remote to bulb. Once the show started and I tried taking pictures, the remote did not work. Sometimes it would take 1 press of the shutter button to lock the mirror, but multiple presses to open the shutter to take the picture. Sometimes it would lockup the mirror first press, but again, multiple presses of the shutter would be required to open the shutter. This was very frustrating to say the least. I would say that out of about 100 photos I took, the remote worked properly maybe 10 times tops. The next day, I tried another set of batteries I had at home, but had the same problem. A few Days later a bought another pack of new batteries, and had the same results. The remote worked fine up until now, but if the life of the product is less than a year, thats not encouraging. Also, I have not used it extensively during the time I had it. I have probably used it maybe a dozen times, so I do not think I overworked it or wore it out.

It worked for a few weeks...

Comments about Vello Wireless ShutterBoss Timer Remote (Nikon 10-Pin Connection):

Upon arriving, the batteries it came with were dead (remote) and corroded (receiver). I bought my own batteries and it worked fine for a bit. Except that in "single shot" mode it fired three in a burst. I changed the camera to single mode to prevent this happening again.

Then after not using it for a bit and beginning again (with new batteries) it would not transmit in the correct channel. As soon as I plugged it and turned it on, it would simply hold the shutter down taking a huge burst. I had to resort to not using it again. It had such potential...now it's in the garbage. So disappointed.

Grat product for the price. Nothing really nad to say. If anything, it would be nice to have a power switch on the remote transmitter like the receiver has

Issues with Vello Wireless ShutterBoss for my D810

By Richard

from Undisclosed

Comments about Vello Wireless ShutterBoss Timer Remote (Nikon 10-Pin Connection):

My first impression with this product started out great. After about 2 weeks the transmitter started to dangerously heat up. I quickly removed the batteries which were very hot and fried the transmitter. Vello replaced the entire unit at no charge.

I snagged the wire with the second one while hiking at Zion NP (not aggressively).   I went to take a shot and the camera started firing off continuously all by itself. I chalked it up an error on my part. I then purchased another wire from B&H. After about three months my D810 failed to show a preview on my LCD after each shot when using the remote. It was happening mostly in Bulb Mode. I had to unscrew the 10 PIN connector to preview the photo on my LCD. It was very annoying. Now it will initially trigger the shot in Bulb Mode but fails to end the shot when pressing the release a second time. So now what? Do I purchase another wire and see if that's the problem? I must say the quality of the wire is cheap.
I really like Vellos menu setup and its ease of use. I am thinking of getting rid of the Wireless remote all together and purchasing the 10 PIN ShutterBoss Version II. I'm a bit gun shy though with the quality of Vellos products. I hate to by the Nikon MC 36A for $160 for an inferior product just for the Nikon name brand. I'm at a loss at this point.

Very disappointing performance

Comments about Vello Wireless ShutterBoss Timer Remote (Nikon 10-Pin Connection):

Worked as described for a few minutes. Then very intermittent shutter release, making it impossible to time photos when used for portrait photography. This would work okay if you have all day to take a photograph. I've tried changing channels, then wired the remote directly to the receiver, and STILL the darned thing won't take the photograph. The manual doesn't give any trouble shooting tips or do's and don'ts. All in all I regret buying this piece of equipment, and it makes me hesitate to buy any other wireless shutter release. I bought this on B&H Photo's recommendation as others had bought this when purchasing the D810. I will be a more informed buyer in the future, like I was with the D810, before "throwing in" other pieces of equipment based on B&H's recommendations.

This works great for all of my long exposure photography. I have used it for over a year. When I was looking for another one for my second camera, I researched and felt like this was still the best out there. The only thing that could be improved is adding a power switch to the shutter release. If any button is pushed it automatically comes on. It does shut off after a few minutes if not used.

Comments about Vello Wireless ShutterBoss Timer Remote (Nikon 10-Pin Connection):

I've tried them all. As far as wireless goes, I have been very disappointed with every single system I have tried prior to this one. I wish I would have bought it first because it would have saved me a lot of money, missed shots, and frustration. It's reliable, isn't quirky, and I have yet to experience any malfunctions or misfires.

Comments about Vello Wireless ShutterBoss Timer Remote (Nikon 10-Pin Connection):

Don't spend your time reading this review - just buy it!

The remotely operated Vello shutterBoss is opening up new ways for me to enjoy photography. I am using the ShutterBoss on a Fuji X-T10 with the included connection for the Fuji camera. Here are some of its features.

Manual - although you could figure out all of the settings on your own, the manual is a joy to read. it is clear, concise, and written in English by someone who understands the language.

1.) You can take single shots from a distance.
2.) You can take multiple shots from a distance

In both cases, the remote had no problem shooting through my double-paned windows and sliding doors.

You can program the remote to delay shots and to repeat shots.

3.) In Bulb mode, you can program the unit to shoot for intervals of any time length. My camera only meters up to 30 seconds, but with the shutterBoss I can open and close the shutter for any length of time.

4.) The ShutterBoss can be used as an intervolomter in case your camera doesn't have this feature.

However, there are a coupe of annoyances. The handheld unit automatically turns itself off - there is no-off switch. When I set up my camera to photograph birds, the darn unit shut itself off after a couple of minutes. Hitting any button will turn it back on, but it then defaults to the SINGLE shot mode, not where you left off. The Vello should have a proper on-off switch to prevent this.

When you hold the handheld unit, you thumb naturally falls on the control button/wheel, not on the shutter button. You have to consciously move your thumb down. Several times I unintentionally pressed the control button when I wanted to press the shutter button, and missed some photos of birds. The handle of the handheld unit should be longer, or reconfigures so your thumb falls naturally on the shutter button.

Tried it only once so far. Tried the complex method that requires remote, delay, long exposure, and multiple exposures for astrophotography using the 300s.

Instructions are clear, all worked as expected. The battery in the remote is a special type that you cannot get at the corner store though.

I purchased this about a year ago from B&H. It didn't function at all, I assumed the batteries were bad. After a family emergency kept me occupied for several months, I finally bought new batteries. Still nothing. It was beyond the window for a return to B&H, so I had to send it to the manufacturer. They replaced it with a new unit, which worked exactly ONE time. I can sometimes get it to work as a wired trigger, but that is very sporadic. I had my camera tested at a local camera shop, and everything is perfectly functional when using other wireless triggers. The ShutterBoss is poor quality, completely unreliable, and a huge disappointment.

After doing what it should do, it repeats the process until I power off the receiver.
