I own the silver version and love it. The shoot thru provides a wonderful light with soft falloff. I also use it outdoors as a diffuser to shade subjects for portraits. Works great! At this price I can't see why anyone wouldn't have one just in case. Works great indoors or out. Just beware of the size indoors and the wind load outdoors. Sand bags are your friend outdoors.

This umbrella is well made, however there is a hot spot in the center, probably because this umbrella is so big. Consequently because the light is more hot in the center, the color is also different when the subject is placed in the center of the umbrella and when they are closer to the sides.

I sold this umbrella in the end and use the Wescott Parabolic white reflective umbrella with the black lining and the diffuser in the front.

Another part of my Westcott umbrella trio.

Comments about Westcott 7' Parabolic Umbrella (White Diffusion):

• I use this umbrella to create cloudy lighting. It's one of the three giant, parabolic umbrellas Westcott makes, to which all I own. You can shoot through and you can also use to bounce. I use it to shower light everywhere for an "overcast" look.
• What I like about this umbrella, just like all umbrellas they offer, it's a QUICK and easy setup and very universal. Granted you have the space to use it and with no wind to bring it down, any of these umbrellas can give you wholesome, beautiful lighting based on your specific needs! It's light and folds/unfolds really easily, comes with a carrying case, and you can get the diffuser sock for it, which is fairly affordable. For it's price, it's definitely a wiser choice against a large softbox for not only functionality, but convenience. The lighting based on the umbrella type will serve you well. With fiberglass rods and durable material, they will definitely last you years. I get amazing wraparounds with the lighting too.
• The only thing I can say noticeable on the con side is that if you will find that you may need to use gaffer tape to secure it from sliding through the hole where you mount the umbrella through (or at least I need it for my Profoto D1 Air strobe monolights.
• Overall, I say that these umbrellas by Westcott will most likely be a staple in your lighting kit due to the price and convenience of use. You should at least try them out.

I've only used it once so far, but I was very happy with the light this 7' umbrella produced. It was like having a bay window that I could just pop open.

I have NOT used the umbrella yet, but my first reaction as WOW this thing is huge, but very impressive. I'm setting up a practice shoot now and will be using to speed lights into the umbrella. My objective in this purchase is for larger group photographs.

Comments about Westcott 7' Parabolic Umbrella (White Diffusion):

I have used this as both a diffuser in direct sun and in studio with strobes as a modifier and both times it performed perfectly.
I had a client that had one day to shoot, a specific location and a specific time of day. Which of course meant blaring sun out in the open. This turned the most wretched, hard light into a beautiful diffused light I could work with.
This was the first umbrella I've used in the studio as I always used soft boxes or beauty dishes and I was impressed with the look of the shots. It's going to come in very handy and considering the price, it's a bargain.
It IS large. Probably bigger than you're envisioning in your head, so this isn't something you can leave on it's own outdoors in the wind.

A really big lighting instrument for really soft light that only takes a few seconds to set up. This is the second one of these I've bought... it's not super durable but then again it doesn't cost that much and it saves a ton of time setting up. I don't want to be without one. It's like bouncing a light off a really big white wall only you don't need the wall.

Beautiful big soft light! Added with the optional diffuser it works perfectly at a fraction of the cost one would pay for a soft box this size. Easy to set up and put away. Looks really cool when set up with the diffusor too; like a space disc!

Comments about Westcott 7' Parabolic Umbrella (White Diffusion):

While the umbrella is fairly light (for the size), it will still put a lot of stress on the umbrella holder; therefore, I would not use a cheap plastic clamp. Instead, consider using a sturdy metal umbrella clamp like Manfrotto 026 unit. Also, a sturdy stand is a must.

It is well-made and the large size allows for really soft, diffuse light. While the quality of "diffuseness and softness" may not be quite good as a large soft box, it is almost as good and is a lot easier to deploy in the field as some soft boxes are rather fiddly to set up and break down.

On a windy day, I would not trust just sandbags to hold this thing down. It has multiple uses and relatively value priced for what it can do. I also have silver backed as well as the black/white ones. They work great as well.
                                Highly recommended.

Comments about Westcott 7' Parabolic Umbrella (White Diffusion):

I used this umbrella as a single shoot-thru and was delighted with the soft light I got from it. Then I paired it with the 7' white reflective parabolic and using it as a fill light, got some incredible light for portraits. Highly recommended!

Comments about Westcott 7' Parabolic Umbrella (White Diffusion):

It is a good umbrella, very big (which is the point), and well made. It is a bit heavy so make sure you use a solid stand and clamp. You may also need weights on the stand for counterbalance, especially outdoors.

Was going between a scrim or this umbrella to diffuse the harsh sunlight. Does a great job, can also be used as a prop for the model to carry. Of course much better on the wallet and easier to setup

Comments about Westcott 7' Parabolic Umbrella (White Diffusion):

This is the second 7' westcott umbrella that we have purchased. This white diffusion model will be a nice addition to other modifers that we use in the studio. All work is portrait related and most is indoors. The first unit was a white reflective umbrella. We do like the spread of light for larger groupings and have used it for singles too. very happy.
