First of all, it was a nice surprise to find out that the diffusion cover is NOT "silk", but grid cloth! Gaffers love this stuff... it provides the most even light diffusion - much better than a silk (hold it up to a point light source - see pics). Anyway, the kind of grid cloth used in this cover looks to be "noisy" quarter grid cloth (it's slightly crinkly) and it's great!

Was going to get the 46", but they were back-ordered so I bought the 60". It's not as unwieldy as I had feared (I have other large Paul C Buff softboxes that can be a pain). Setup with a boxy strobe like an Einstein takes some wiggling to get the "sock" evenly-centered, but it's not going to make you tear your hair out. The removable portion of the center rod is really ingenius. The results make it all worth it.

If you're buying the 60", I highly recommend picking up a lighting boom arm.

Just to get this out of the way: this is one of the most versatile modifiers that you can own. Think of it as three units in one: large reflective and shoot-through umbrellas as well as a large brolly box. When traveling and kit size is an issue, this gets brought along before my 5' octabox does.

The removable shaft is brilliant, allowing the unit to get closer to your subject when used with the diffuser.

That said, there are times when Softlighters drive me crazy. The ribs are very, very fragile, more so than on other umbrellas: they'll overlap and snap when opening the umbrella, they'll bend and snap if falling to the ground even gently. I've replaced each size of Softlighter multiple times.

The rib tips, that secure the black cover, constantly pop off and require adjustment.

This thing is several times the weight of other umbrellas of comparable size.

I don't stop buying them, but I definitely have a love-hate relationship with them.

Comments about Photek Softlighter II Umbrella (60"):

I love this light modifier. I own two of them. The large size combined with the diffusion panel is a beautiful soft light. My only gripe about it is the diffusion panel is a bit loose on both of my umbrellas. They just don't fit as snug as you would expect, but it doesn't seem to affect the quality of the light.

My "Desert Island" light modifier. An octa that goes to 10!

Comments about Photek Softlighter II Umbrella (60"):

Whenever asked about my "desert island" light modifier I mention the Photek 60" Softlighter. It is a reflective umbrella, a shoot through umbrella, and a diffused umbrella all in one. I especially like the removable shaft on the 8mm version (sorry, Elinchrom users, you need the 7mm version) so that the light can be brought in very close to your subject without poking them. With its 10 ribs, it is like an octabank that goes to 10. Round catchlights for those who like that. Very portable and easy to set up. Much less expensive than a comparable size octa. Great for individuals and for groups. I have had my original Softlighter for about 20 years--still going strong. Purchased this one as a back-up and to use on a project where I need 2 setups. The downside of the Softlighter vs Octa is that the light stand and flash head will show up in some catchlights and reflections, but that has not been a big issue for me.

If you're looking for soft light at a low price point this a great product. We use this product indoors, not sure if I would take much abuse from strong winds.

For an umbrella this size and the different options it gives you I think this a good deal. My issue, as with most umbrellas, is the construction is never good enough.

Purchase with caution - build quality not great

By Matt

Comments about Photek Softlighter II Umbrella (60"):

Quality of light is beautiful. Quality of the product, not so much. One of the joints broke the very first time I opened it. The whole thing feels flimsy compared to my two medium sized versions of the product. The ribs are very very thin. The caps that hold the outer black cover to the ribs fall off very easily. They changed the material the diffusor is made out from; it feels cheap.

Maybe I got a bum unit. Will update review if my replacement is better.

Love the light, needs a better diffuser

By treje

Comments about Photek Softlighter II Umbrella (60"):

I have bought this product for several years. The light it produces is beautiful and soft, and it's easy to set up and break down. The umbrella portion of the modifier is not the greatest, so I end up having to replace it every year or two.

The new one I just purchased in 10/16 used a new material for the diffuser. It's very loud compared to the old diffuser and the velcro isn't in the correct place, so it doesn't stay attached. I hope they correct this!

Great quality light

Comments about Photek Softlighter II Umbrella (60"):

I would have given this five stars but the sock where the strobe pokes through should offer more options such as the ability to put two non-strobe strobes such as Canon EX-580II without having to stretch the sock over them. I use a Phottix mini-boom and this allows the umbrella and flash heads to be perfectly aligned.

Excellent modifier

Comments about Photek Softlighter II Umbrella (60"):

The photek softlighter II is an excellent light modifier especially for the money. It produces very pleasing diffused light but still retains a bit of snap to it. The gridcloth diffusion front also helps keep the light from spreading too much. Excellent value for the money.

Rating based on customer service

Comments about Photek Softlighter II Umbrella (60"):

I would rate it in 2 parts, first part about the customer service in b&h. I received it quickly and in its original packaging and looks fine, as per b&h recommendation to visually check your item once arrived, I did that and surprisingly found one loose spoke which is a QC issue from the manufacturer not obviously b&h, went to the live chat and Cole helped me with regards to how to handle my issue and he made a note on file in case it didn't work and offered refund or replacement but I will try it to give my second part review about the quality of this reputable umbrella. Thanks b&h and Photek should be more careful about their QC. More coming in Part 2 of my review. 5 star CS.

Very soft lighting

By Jolanphotos

Comments about Photek Softlighter II Umbrella (60"):

The softlighter 60 inch version has taken my portrait shots even pet photography to the next level. hands down some of the best shots I have ever taken has been with this amazing lightweight piece of equipment. It sets up very fast folds down very fast it's not built to play football with, you know what I mean. You could probably break it if you weren't a little careful. Don't give me wrong it's not extremely flimsy by any means. The material it's made of is tough as Nails as far as I can tell. Shooting with my 600ex Speedlite ettl, my shots come out perfect every time. I can't say enough about this thing.

Defective Item no Solution!

By Unhappy Customer

from Florida

Comments about Photek Softlighter II Umbrella (60"):

The umbrella arrived defective, one of the ribs was missing a screw so it's lose making it unable to close or open. No positive answer was giving regarding sending the missing screw to the domestic address so I can fix this! I am sure this could have been a great modifier but the one on this website does not even come with the silver and gold circled reflectors and there has not been any response to my second email asking to please send the missing screw to the domestic address.

    Big soft source.

    By J6photo

    from Washington DC

Comments about Photek Softlighter II Umbrella (60"):

I love the portability of this product, and the soft light it produces. I will say the umbrella is fragile, the spokes are thin and could bend easily. But if you care for it properly it will last a long time.
