Ignore all the miswritten negative reviews you see around here, whoever wrote them never read the instructions. First, the video handle works for both left and right hands you simply have to flip it from one side to the other. There is no reason to lose any of the camera screws if you dont need the large one just leave it threaded in the hole. It gets it out of the way and keeps the smaller screw from falling out....DUH. The Neck that holds the camera has ZERO flex, in fact it could probably hold 3 times the heads rated weight without any strain. It doesnt have 2 knobs for locking perpendicular and up and down movement, the little one is the friction control, the big one is the lock, RTFM please! No its not as simple to use as a simple ball head but unlike ballhead it will hold the biggest DSLR with an 8lb 300mm nikon lens in any angle or any wierd orientation you wish. For video mode it pans and moves up and down superbly smoothly. The counterweight feature is excellent to maintain your vidoe camera "light" on the mount. The fact is, its simply spectacular for both video and photo very strongly recommended. If you need to mount a 50 pound HD video camera this is not for you, but its not meant to be either. Lastly a little advice for those "proffesionals" that write silly reviews, before you review something please know how to operate the device, a good place to start is to read the manual, its only 4 pages.....Sheesh

used 10 -12 times - head becomes stiff and not as fluid- sent in for repair - a small knob is broken - plastic part does not grab the metal part for turning - head doesnt have a scratch on it - repair is not covered under warrantee - even though it seems to be an internal problem - cost for repair 330 dollars
almost the cost of the head itself- i own leica,hassy,nikon,- done over 2200 assignments for the NYTImes - This is the first time in my professional career
that a piece of equipment has had such horrible premature death . This Tripod head does not seem to be designed for profession use - or at the very least can't sustain - by its design - actual professional use - maybe in a studio but in my use not for free range -

Not Fluid at All

Comments about Manfrotto MH055M8-Q5 Photo-Movie Tripod Head With Q5 QR Plate:

As it turns out the word fluid pertains onlt to the motion you are able to apply to it and not to its actual physical construction. Friction drag gave me jittery video while panning after many tries. Even let a few other rock steady panning pros put it through the motion with the same result. Ended up returning as performance was not as advertised. Very heavy and cumbersome.

Comments about Manfrotto MH055M8-Q5 Photo-Movie Tripod Head With Q5 QR Plate:

I like the head very much. Big but light. Lots of knobs so sometimes difficult to see bubbles and pan degrees. But when you purchase everything in one, not everything will be perfect. Easy to switch cameras if you have multiple plates. No need for L-plates any more, perfect vertical camera position.

Clunky, unwieldy, broken

By Ray the photog

Comments about Manfrotto MH055M8-Q5 Photo-Movie Tripod Head With Q5 QR Plate:

This head is clunky and unwieldy. But usually clunky means durable and strong, right? Wrong. This head, although heavy, feels very cheap. I've never liked it, and I am a huge fan of Manfrotto in general. I've had it for more than two years now, and its cheap design finally gave way when I was simply tightening my plate to the head. The metal bracket on the left side of the head where the plate slides into actually snapped, rendering the head immediately useless. The whole thing is casted metal, so there was no welded seam to break, the cast literally failed. It shocked me that simply tightening my plate, just like I always have, was enough to completely ruin the head. When I picked it up to show somebody later, the other part where the left side of the head was connected broke off as well. See the attached photo for a better understanding of what I am describing.

Nothing on this head moves fluid enough for professional-grade panning/tilting anyway. I guess that's what I get for trying to get the best of both worlds. Another serious problem I had was when the head was locked into video mode, it always leaned just a degree or two to the right. There's was nothing I could do about it, it was simply a design flaw. Photo mode wasn't an issue because you could adjust and lock the head wherever you needed it. If you are unfamiliar with this head, this might seem confusing, but if you have used/owned this head, then you will understand what I am saying. My final qualm with this head was that the pan/tilt bar was very small and very weak. It even rotated occasionally no matter how much I tightened it to the head. This head was a neat concept, but proves to me that buying a hybrid photo/video head might be a bad idea.

Comments about Manfrotto MH055M8-Q5 Photo-Movie Tripod Head With Q5 QR Plate:

This relatively lite fluid head provides decent fluid video panning and quick vertical/horizontal racking for those who cross shoot still photography also.

This 2 in 1 tripod head tool is a good solution for lightening the load for mobile photographer/videographers. The solid quick release plates make for fast switching of gear.

Be careful not to over tighten adjustments.

Manfrotto is a very reliable brand, the construction is great, it is made with magnesium but feels robust and stable. I am a photographer and have a lot manfrotto ball heads, but I want to start to make some videos with my New Sony a7RII and the head works just GREAT!!.There is a lot to things to learn to have a full functionality of the head, but works great.

I have taken this head out on a couple of shoots now, and absolutely love the versatility of it. While it is a bit heavy, I didn't find it to be overly heavy especially for it being a fluid head video tripod. If you're looking for a versatile and solidly built head, you can't go wrong with this one

This Tripod head is amazing for videography, timelapse photography, and in the field photography. However I wish there was a quick overview in the packaging to show you how to quickly use the head. I was scratching my head trying to figure out use it until I found out the video lock button holds the tripod head in landscape orientation. From this point on, no problems what so ever.

Comments about Manfrotto MH055M8-Q5 Photo-Movie Tripod Head With Q5 QR Plate:

the photo-movie head is a great idea and great head except for the following:

I have used entry to pro level heads in my field which use the similar release plates as this one. the only thing that is different is that the old plate (doesn't matter the cost) has a rubber stopper so if you don't use the big screw you can take it off (typical DSLR and mid to small cam) and don't have to worry about the small screw falling off the plate. Some crazy genius now cut cost and use the big screw as the stopper which if I take the big screw off (don't want to hear it rattle while tilting the camera) then the small screw will fall of the plate when not attach to a camera. at least give me a short screw or a rubber stopper. This is too stressful for the price

Comments about Manfrotto MH055M8-Q5 Photo-Movie Tripod Head With Q5 QR Plate:

This head is as strong as it looks like. If used for photo, there is no doubt to hold a 300mm lens at all. In terms of video, I found the panning is a little bit tight, it is not as fluid as the head rotation.

I tried to dissemble this head and found too sophisticated to do. regarding the price, it is much worth having.

            I love this head.

So far so good. It is a bit awkward to use compared to either a standard ball head, or a dedicated video head and that makes sense. The only thing I seem to have a problem with is getting the pan handle to stay in place. Since I am mostly using the head for static video and photo it doesn't make a big difference I keep the handle in my bag so it doesn't get lost in the woods. It is easy enough to position the camera without it.

This is replacing my old Bogen Head as well as a recently purchased ball head. The Manual is terrible but check out the U TUBE video from Monfroto. This video explains it all.Shooting horizontal photographs at ground level is difficult due to the bulky design of the head. See the attached imageI have seen reviews saying it looks cool however it is about functionality and versatility. This will make a great addition to a photographers tool box.I immediately purchase a second QR plate for my Hasselblad and with the pin at the front of the QR plate, it adds stability and provides a secure attachment to the camera for vertical shots.

Comments about Manfrotto MH055M8-Q5 Photo-Movie Tripod Head With Q5 QR Plate:

Very well made tripod head that gives dslr video a nice smooth movement through each shot. It doubles seamlessly into a photography head that has a great locking mechanism that pivots from portrait to landscape. I've found the fine tuning knob for the pivot tension great for vertical angles when shooting videos. This has been an all around great tripod head.

Comments about Manfrotto MH055M8-Q5 Photo-Movie Tripod Head With Q5 QR Plate:

This product is the solution to the problem for shooters of both stills and video. For years I trucked two tripods from job to job because my superior video tripod with fluid head locked my camera down well for horizontal images, but when I needed to switch to vertical shooting, it was a no go and I had to switch to the stills tripod. I'm pleased that this head simply replaces my Fluid 501 video head on the great Manfrotto tripod legs and I now have ONE tripod that performs exceedingly well for both horizontal and vertical stills, as well as for fluid video. Thank you, Manfrotto.

Some comments are correct in pointing out that the fastening clip, release plate, and camera can sometimes conflict when locking down. It takes only a little experimenting to suss out proper placement and you are good to go.
