Very sturdy & light for it's capacity, this tripod is extremely well thought out in its design. The design of the geared wheel for center column adjustment allows for easy and precise minute adjustment even with a heavy load. The best feature for me is the dual 1/4inch 3/8ths inch locking screw, that converts easily with no tools required that you can misplace or loose in tall grass or streams. The bottom 4/5ths of the center column unscrews easily allowing you to spread the legs out almost flat. The markers on the legs make setting all the legs up to the same height a snap. This tripod is a just a joy to use.

This tripod replaced a Manfrotto 3021b pro, which I've used for about 8 years. The Auctus has several well thought out design features: the ribbed feet, which prevent slipping, and the added stability of carbon fiber, along with the number markings on the legs to ensure equal leg height. However, after trying to screw on a new tripod head, I found the new head would not tighten down and spun freely. Then, to my complete amazement, the whole top piece came off in my hand-- the tripod head, stud, and threads. It appeared there was some adhesive to hold it together, which failed...after only 3 uses in less than 2 months after purchasing. Fortunately, B&H has been understanding and are willing to process a return. Great customer service, B&H!

Comments about Vanguard Auctus Plus 283CT Carbon Fiber Tripod:

The Vanguard Auctus Plus 323CT Professional Tripod is better than I was anticipating. To maintain a stable and secure foundation for a camera, this is outstanding -- attractive, easy to assemble, sturdy, and versatile. It arrives in a very nice cardboard box with a handle. Also included is a black and orange carrying case with a shoulder strap. A hand crank raises and lowers the center column and it moves very smoothly. The tripod can simply be converted for macro shots with low camera placement. For low angle photography using very wide legs, the bottom half of the center column can very easily be removed by simply unscrewing the hook and turning the bottom ring. Very smart and pretty fast, too. Having the option to attach anti slip spiked rubber feet is a great advantage in snow or sand and adds to the stability of the tripod. The three sectioned legs are extremely easy to extend with a slight turn of the amply sized twist locks and each leg has clearly marked segments for perfect measuring. They can be locked at the top, another stability and security advantage, at three angles (25, 50 and 80 degrees). If desired, a camera bag or weight can be hung from the hook on the center column.Read more ›

First real tripod after using several cheap light versions. Feels very sturdy, a good weight to it, did a time lapse in high wind recently and it held everything rock solid. Use it with heavy Len's and again feels very solid. Have not tried any higher end tripods so cant compare. Well worth the price I paid. Use it with a Ball and Gimbal head and both work very well.

Comments about Vanguard Auctus Plus 283CT Carbon Fiber Tripod:

I've always wanted a heavy duty tripod with a geared column so I can get the desired precision control when moving the camera up and down. I have no idea why the Actus line of tripods are being sold so cheap, but as soon as I saw this, I picked one up. I am pleased with it's performance. I have a Manfrotto 410 geared head mounted to the tripod, so now I have total control in every direction except horizontal. The head handles all of the swinging movements (vertical, horizontal and tilt swings) and the tripod's geared column handles moving "altitude" position of the camera.

Comments about Vanguard Auctus Plus 283CT Carbon Fiber Tripod:

I'm an architectural photographer and travel for my work. After years of lugging around an old Bogen 3036 "rocket launcher", I decided to try out something much lighter and portable. I was very pleasantly surprised by the build quality of this tripod. It seems to be very well made, and is fairly sturdy to get the job done. Typically, I'll shoot with a DSLR and Tilt-Shift lenses on a Manfrotto Pano Head. The reason I'm not giving it 5 stars is that it tends to be slightly wobbly under these conditions. Perhaps it's because I'm still used to what I had before. Also, the carry bag that it comes with is only large enough for the legs and a ball head. It will not fit a 3-way pan head.

Comments about Vanguard Auctus Plus 283CT Carbon Fiber Tripod:

I originally had a Vinton (the model escapes me). It worked ok for me for a few years as I was only shooting video. Over the last 3 years I have been including still photography into my service offering, and the big, bulky Vinton just wasn't cutting it anymore. I needed something much more portable for my location shoots. We checked out a few different carbon fiber options, and of course there was a huge spectrum and pay scale. I couldn't afford a really really expensive one, so I went middle of the road. SO GLAD I DID! I (and my PA) LOVE these sticks. Light, portable, easy to lock and unlock, flexible, gives me so many more options for unique and artistic angles. Couldn't have asked for better. No need to spend close to $1000 for a quality set of carbon fiber sticks. If you are doing video or stills, you really can't go wrong with these!
