I've been frustrated with my 580ex II's for a while. If I was using the flashes at full power and I didn't wait a full 5-7 seconds between shots, the subsequent shots would be underexposed.

I bought 2 of these battery packs (1 for each 580) and had a chance to test them this weekend. I was very pleased with the results. I fired the flashes very quickly (2 seconds or so), and every shot was exposed the same.

The only improvement I would suggest is the ability to unplug the cord from the battery pack. I use PocketWizards on my 580's and they require the AC7 shield to function properly. Here's the annoying part, I have to remove the flash from the AC7 to plug/unplug the battery pack.

Let me be clear, the inconvenience is NOT at all Bolt's fault. Other than that, I love these.

After reading all the glowing reviews for the CBP-C1, I bought one for use with my 580EX II and MR-14EX Macro Ring Lite. Having never used an external battery pack before, I left the settings on the flash to refresh from internal or external batteries. While using it for a photo shoot I noticed the refresh time started to drop drastically. So I changed the batteries in my battery pack only to find the refresh times stayed the same. After changing the settings to refresh only from the external batteries it would not refresh at all. So I tried it on my MR-14EX and it worked most of the time, but occasionally dropped out. I checked the connector and found that one of the 3 pins on the cord was recessed.

I returned it to B&H for repair and bought the Canon CP-E4 battery pack. It worked perfectly on both flashes plus when you plug it into the flash, unlike the Bolt, the connector locks tightly into the socket on both flashes. The Bolt definitely has problems with the interface cord design and/or build. The CP-E4 is much better in both design and build quality, well worth the extra cost.

By the way, B&H did a great job handling the return of the Bolt unit.

Comments about CBP-C1 Compact Battery Pack for Select Canon & Bolt VX Series Flashes:

I've used four of these with Canon 600EX-RT flashes.  I don't have any experience with the Canon battery packs for context but the Bolt ones are made well enough to hold up under my occasional use.  I know they hold the recycle times down to a second or two rather than five or more on the internal batteries alone.  They're fairly expensive for what they are but they're a decent bargain for what they do.

Twelve AA cells per flash makes for some work getting them into and out of chargers but I'd rather suffer the failure of a small number of cheap AAs than an entire monolithic lithium pack.

I haven't used the sleeve for anything but it appears to be manufactured well.  The threaded fastener to screw the pack to a camera body is similarly well made.  The idea doesn't appeal to me though; an arrangement with a flat-head fastener so the pack and the camera sit flat on a table would be more use.

Altogether though they make my flashes work harder and this appears to be the most efficient way to do it.

Really improves the speedlite recycle time

Comments about CBP-C1 Compact Battery Pack for Select Canon & Bolt VX Series Flashes:

I already owned two of these and decided to purchase two more so each speedlite would have a battery pack when the environment required two speedlites for each umbrella.

Using the battery packs really improves the speedlite recycle time. Now I'm able to get the shoot because I'm no longer waiting for the speedlites to recharge.

For the price, why wouldn't you want better performance?

Comments about CBP-C1 Compact Battery Pack for Select Canon & Bolt VX Series Flashes:

If you are a wedding shooter, you already know that your batteries can let you down at the worst times. This battery pack is thin, easy to use, and is what I consider a "must-have" accessory. Not only will wedding shooters benefit, but anyone shooting events or doing on location portraiture with flash units will benefit. I've purchase two of these so that when I'm shooting a model on location, I won't have to interrupt my shoot at an awkward time to deal with spent batteries. Pack clips to your belt or use the included tripod mount, or like me, rig the pack to hang from a light stand. For this price why wouldn't you try one or two of these?

Battery Pack

Comments about CBP-C1 Compact Battery Pack for Select Canon & Bolt VX Series Flashes:

Purchased the battery packs for my canon flashes. They help shorten the recycle time so the light output is more even.
The only change I would make would be a detachable power cord that could be manufactured in longer lengths.

Simple but useful. Not sure how well it will hold up with use. Pretty sure cord will be the first thing to go. Cheap compared to Canon cost but either is over-priced for what it is.

Recycle My 600EX II-RT In About 1 Second

Comments about CBP-C1 Compact Battery Pack for Select Canon & Bolt VX Series Flashes:

Bought a new 600EX II-RT used my older CBP-C1 that I used with my older 580 EXII. Since the CBP-C1 came on sale on Black Friday at a good price, I decided to buy another one so I would have one for both my flashes. More importantly, the CBP-C1 does seem to work better with my 600EX II-RT compared to my 580 EXII. It recycle the 600EX II-RT in about 1 to 1.25 seconds and the 580 EXII in about 1.5 - 2 seconds. For the price, it works great.

Doesn't make much difference.

Comments about CBP-C1 Compact Battery Pack for Select Canon & Bolt VX Series Flashes:

I used this several times with my Yonguo 565EX.  I used the same batteries in both the flash and the battery pack.  When the flash fires, the light on the battery pack lights momentarily so I'm assuming that it is working.  However, I didn't notice any perceptible improvement in recharge time.  I don't think that there was any noticeable improvement in the number of shots before the batteries in the camera needed to be changed.

When I recharged the batteries, the batteries from the camera charged for several hours.  They seem to have been completely depleted.  The batteries from the battery pack recharged quickly and seemed to have hardly been discharged.

I guess it's pretty much useless to me.

Must Have For Weddings

Comments about CBP-C1 Compact Battery Pack for Select Canon & Bolt VX Series Flashes:

I own two of these and use them for faster recycle times shooting weddings and events. I use them with two canon 600ex flash. I don't notice much if any flash inconsistency when I shot an image every second or so. I don't know what else the BRAND pack might offer but I feel as if I'm getting what I need for half the price. Did I mention I bought two for the price of a BRAND pack!

Comments about CBP-C1 Compact Battery Pack for Select Canon & Bolt VX Series Flashes:

I was scary taking a chance on a small battery pack but when I used it and the flash was always ready I was happy as can be. I like the choice of eight batteries or four to operate the flash and using rechargeable batteries gives great power at no extra expense. I used it on a wedding and a banquet with no problems at all.

Comments about CBP-C1 Compact Battery Pack for Select Canon & Bolt VX Series Flashes:

I was looking for a new battery pack that would fit my LumoPro LP-180 flash units, and bought this item based on the reviews. I'd never used a Bolt product before but I've used it on several shoots so far and have been pleased. Construction is good, and my recycle time was fast. So far I haven't had any need to replace the batteries during shoots that last 2-3 hours.

Works great. Recycles flash in 1 second flat

Comments about CBP-C1 Compact Battery Pack for Select Canon & Bolt VX Series Flashes:

I am using this pack with my Godox/Flashpoint TT685/Zoom R2 TTL flash. It super powers that thing so that it fires in 1 second flat.

The case is nice, I wish it had a way to clip it to a lightstand though.

The cord is perfect and very flexible without feeling insecure.

I wish they had made the battery insert reversible like it is on the Nikon battery pack.

I had purchased a cheap pack off amazon and it made a weird clicking noise, sent it back and got this one on sale for not much more. This one is completely silent, and I'm very happy thus far.

Comments about CBP-C1 Compact Battery Pack for Select Canon & Bolt VX Series Flashes:

At half the price this battery pack saved me time, money, and eased the stress of otherwise having to reload batteries while working a typical 14-hour wedding day event. Solid piece of plastic with sturdy battery compartments. Highly recommended. I'd give it 5 stars if they had a removable power cable from the pack itself.

Comments about CBP-C1 Compact Battery Pack for Select Canon & Bolt VX Series Flashes:

I take a lot of photos of infants or young children. When taking pictures with infants I sometimes like to take four or five quicker shots to make sure I capture a good smile. Previously, that hasn't been possible or I have to correct the light in post production because the flash couldn't recycle fast enough. With these battery packs strapped to my speed lights, I haven't had to worry about the recycle time (so long as I don't go up above 1/2, something I don't often do as infants tend to respond poorly).

My only complaint, I wish the case had a metal loop or something similar to run a bungee through so that I could attach it to my flash stand. You can do this with the nylon belt loop, but it feels a bit clumsy.
