Never used the Nikon SD-9 but recently bought this as a cheaper alternative. Checked the SB-910 owners manual to get the specs for recycle time with the SD-9. Specs in the manual were minimum recycle times with 12 eneloops of "approximately" 0.8 seconds. Using a stopwatch and 12 fresh eneloops, I got recycles of 0.8 to 1.0 seconds, average of 0.87 seconds, when tested using the manual-described procedure of a full power [1/1 manual] flash every 30 seconds. I also performed this same test using Sanyo XX batteries and got recycles of 0.8 to 1.0 seconds, average of 0.89 seconds. (Test consisted of 10 shots in the series.)

Someone here said the Bolt doesn't recycle as fast as the SD-9 but I'm wondering if this is coming from the listed specs here which may have been with alkalines instead of eneloops. (Alkalines are spec'd slower than eneloops with these devices.) That reviewer didn't say he had actually tested times for himself, as what I did. I'm thinking he may have been comparing the spec'd times of the Bolt with alkalines against the SD-9 with eneloops.

The padded case that comes with the Bolt pack is decent. It's basically the same case as what comes with the Canon flash battery pack but without the tie-down to hold the cord in place.

It's nice that Bolt offers an optional battery tray for this, which I will be buying to load with spare batteries for quick swap outs on the job site. (Some other SD-9 alternatives do not offer an optional battery tray.)

By the way, the SB-910 manual states that recycle times with the SD-9 are slower with 4 batteries in the tray than 8. Never tested 4 in the Bolt but I would imagine it would be the same.

Additionally, I ran a second test where I altered the factory test procedure by, instead of waiting 30 seconds between flashes, I fired as soon as the ready light came on, so just a few seconds between flashes. This procedure yielded 1.0 second recycles [range 0.8 to 1.2] with eneloops and 1.1 second recycles [range 0.8 to 1.2] with Sanyo XX. (Ran this test three times firing 10 shots in a series.)

I am giving this battery pack 3 stars after heavy use in 2 wedding seasons. Last year I shot 29 weddings and this year I shot 24 weddings. The battery pack performed quite well however I have always had flash misfires after a lengthy formal portrait session with large groups in the ceremony area. I feel that after 53 weddings with formal portrait session usually having the same issue that I can blame it on the battery pack. The issue that I always have is that after about 45 minutes of shooting at 1/2 power with SB-900 will start to miss fire. I have used both eneloop rechargeables and alkaline batteries and encountered the same problem. My last wedding I put in all brand new alkalines in, 4 in the flash and 8 in the Bolt battery pack. After 45 minutes I stared having misfires again (Always when I am in the middle of shooting the bride and groom!!!) so I fought my way through and tried not to look like an idiot. When I got home I pulled the batteries out of the Bolt and tested them to see what their charge was and they all tested at 100%! Then I pulled the batteries out of the SB-900 flash and they test 1/2 used!! So! What could this mean? I thought all of the batteries in the flash and the battery pack would wear out together. Not So! This must be a problem with the Bolt not being 100% compatible with the Nikon SB-900 flash in my opinion. So, I am now going to buy the Nikon version for $200 and end this frustrating fight I have been having for the past 2 wedding seasons. Oh, yes, also, the battery compartment has plastic tabs that break off easily if you are not very careful…….

Grteat battery pack for special application of SB-910 flash

Comments about Bolt CBP-N2 Compact Battery Pack for Nikon SB-900, SB-910 & SB-5000 Flashes:

This system greatly expands the potential uses of the SB-910 Nikon flash unit by providing extra power. The SB-910 does very well in mild to moderate use, but when you want to do rapid-fire sequences or take a large number of images, the extra battery power is critical. This unit from Bolt is nearly half of what the Nikon unit costs. I do not have a Nikon battery pack, so I cannot verify any difference in performance, but from what I read, they are basically the same.

The battery pack held beautifully through one day of shooting, no misfires on the flash, charged and good to go for every shot! I have a Nikon d7200 with sb900 flash and it did exactly what it was supposed to.

Comments about Bolt CBP-N2 Compact Battery Pack for Nikon SB-900, SB-910 & SB-5000 Flashes:

First of all you have to realize what this thing is. A plastic holder of 8 AA batteries with a cord that attached to the front of the Nikon speedlight. That's it. I got on sale for $50 or so. Even that doesn't feel cheap to me. This product is solid but looks like it costs $5 to make. And in my case it was defective. The power indicators didn't turn on even with the newest of batteries in both the flash and the unit. It's like a flashlight not working. I called the company and they were helpful and told me the product was defective. So the customer service is good. I'm going to buy the real deal, which is the rechargeable until for $350-400. This thing is just a flashlight with the bulb exchanged for a cord that in turn powers another light. Not worth more than $25 in my mind. I've bought better flashlights with far better casings and construction for less.

I have been wanting this for a while and when i saw it on sale I jumped at it having an event to shoot thought it would be a good chance to put it to the test, normally B&H has my order at my front door the next day but not this time :( it arrived the day of the event so did not see it till i arrived back, anyway i tested it and it seems like it works like it is said to work, recycle times on my SB910 are about half the time.

Comments about Bolt CBP-N2 Compact Battery Pack for Nikon SB-900, SB-910 & SB-5000 Flashes:

Purchased on sale through the B&H deal zone special. Arrived one day early ( Thanks B&H ). Popped 8 batteries into it and away we went. very fast recycle time on my SB900. Reasonable quality construction. Instruction manual could use a little help. The case is very good quality and the cable seems to be fairly sturdy. Overall a very nice product at a fraction of the OEM brand cost. If you need faster cycle times and the ability to run your flash for extended periods this is the product for you.

Have a Turbo Battery pack that has died twice. The initial cost, the first repair cost and either buying a new turbo or getting a second repair would come close to $+. Bought two of these for $ along with rechargeable double A's. Works great while costing much less!

Cost much less than the Nikon brand. It's not the best quality and sure not how long it will last, but if you are just using it occasionally, and use it carefully,It should be fine. Trying it on my D300 at 6FPSwith an SB-910 at full power, it would it fire every other shot. Without it it would fire every 4th shot.

Well constructed battery pack includes a nice soft case which can be belt mounted or the pack can be mounted directly to the camera body using the tripod mount thread (mounting screw included)
On my SB-900 flash I find the recycle time at maximum flash power has been reduced drastically.

It allows me to shoot much longer with shorter recycling times using the Nikon SB900 speedlight. It is not the most robust unit on the market however it is the best value for the price.

I ordered three of them and all of them worked fine with SB-900. But recycling time was off on two of them while connected to CB-910 with the same 8 batteries and the same flash: the good one was recycling in 3-4 sec, the other one was 8 sec, and the third was taking up to 20 seconds, so I figured two of them were faulty and I replaced them. Just got unlucky with the first order. With fully charged batteries the recycling time with SB-910 should be around 2-3 sec. Hope this helps.
