This is my second Pan/Leica 25mm Sumilux f1.4 lens--my first one was the "D" variant for standard 4/3 cameras. I loved my first one and feel almost the same about this one. I bought the DG before my Olympus OM-D arrived, as I literally NEED a very fast standard focal length lens.

This is the lens which I keep on my camera almost all of the time. Its outstanding maximum aperture allows me to shoot indoors without a flash or use an extrodinarily high ISO setting, and I can even do street shooting in the middle of the night and get impressive results. The f1.4 aperture also provides a nice bokeh effect, which can be difficult to achieve with M4/3 lenses with slower lenses.

Unlike the standard 4/3 version of this lens, there is a bit of barrel distortion--more than one would expect from a standard focal length prime designed in-part by Leica. Fortunately, that is corrected in most, if not all, M4/3 cameras by JPEG software; if you shoot RAW, you have to run your images through additional lens correction software/plug-ins to eliminate this distortion.

It also differs from the standard 4/3 version in size, heft, and materials. The "D" Summilux is really large and heavy for a standard focal length prime, even when mated to a good sized SLR body. Its solid Leica-like construction is obviously a big contributor to the lens' mass. THIS ALL CHANGES WITH THE DG LENS. The M4/3 lens is much smaller and lighter than the 4/3 version. Its weight is in perfect ballance on the OM-D (although it might make something like a PEN feel too front-heavy), and the size is just right for making a quick grab to manually focus it. While it might have been nice for this lens to feel more solid, with more metal in its construction, the plastic used is more than strong enough and provides plenty of feel--given the advatage in being much lighter and better suited to M4/3 camera bodies, this trade-off was a no-brainer. I had actually thought about using my Summilux D lens with an adaptor ring on my OM-D body, but the ergonomics of that combination just didn't work out.

The lens is also known for making a soft clicking noise. To my knowledge, this occurs with some cameras as the aperture is quckly moving open and closed whenplaced in an automatic setting. I typically shoot in an aperture priority mode, and as such, have not yet heard this clicking noise on the OM-D.

I should also note that this lens auto-focusses lightning-fast on the OM-D; probably about as fast as the 12-50mm Zuiko which came with the camera, although that's just my seat-of-the-pants appraisal.

All in all, I can't think of a better lens to have on my camera to shoot with in almost any situation, outside of where I need a very long or very wide focal length for a specific reason. The lens might not be cheap for a standard prime, but the quality of my images is crucial to me so I think of it as money very well spent.

I was very excite with this lens after ordering it, once it got to my home, I put it on my gh1 to try it out. The focus is kind slow somehow, also during the focusing process I have noticed it seems not be able to lock on the subject, shaky at best. I did notice a lot of grinding noise when use auto focus with this lens.

Comments about Panasonic Leica DG Summilux 25mm f/1.4 ASPH. Lens:

This was the second lens I bought for m43. I've had it since 2009/10. Even with all the great new lenses out there, this is my go to lens for getting great photos in any light. It is small, lightweight, and a great value.

Good, but outdated

Comments about Panasonic Leica DG Summilux 25mm f/1.4 ASPH. Lens:

In the search for the best normal lens, I tried this one. Pluses: the image quality is good. It isn't heavy. The lens hood is pretty cool. The minuses: It's plastic. The image quality, while good, is not great. It's outdated.

Suggestion: Panasonic needs to make an updated version of this Leica labeled lens that is up to the standards of the 42.5, and the 12mm. Those are all metal and the image quality is a grade above the rest. All lenses with Leica on it should be made like this.

Comments about Panasonic Leica DG Summilux 25mm f/1.4 ASPH. Lens:

After trying all the available 25mm for mtf, I settled on the Leica for image quality build and the way it feels when I shoot with it. Lens lives up to Leica's name, beautiful bokeh and fantast contrast. Sharp images even at 1.4 With MTF I enjoy using the 25mm pov - for me this was good addition.

Great wide lens

Comments about Panasonic Leica DG Summilux 25mm f/1.4 ASPH. Lens:

I bought this lens to go with my Olympus OMD M1 MFT travel kit specifically as the lens for low light conditions. I also have the Leica Summilux lens on the Panasonic LX100 and have been very impressed. So far this new MFT lens has not disappointed. Build quality is very good. It is light weight and in conjunction with the M1 makes for a very lightweight duo. I have tested the lens in normal conditions and the IQ is great, so much so that I could almost travel with just this one lens. I like close ups as well and this lens does a great job there as well. AF with the M1 is lightning fast and spot on. Highly recommended.

Comments about Panasonic Leica DG Summilux 25mm f/1.4 ASPH. Lens:

Luego de tres meses de usarlo puedo decir que es un excelente lente.
La definición es muy aceptable y el DOF que se consigue es hermoso.
Para usuarios de M43 este podría ser un lente para todo uso.

Comments about Panasonic Leica DG Summilux 25mm f/1.4 ASPH. Lens:

Of course I like it on my Lumix GX8. I've been a Nikon guy for decades and decided to take the plunge in M43. Panasonic is playing with the big boys and is doing a very credible job. This lens is the equal to or better than the best glass in class. Light weight, fast & sharp, nice bokeh. What else could you possibly want? Stop deliberating and reading endless reviews like I did. Save your time and just get one.

Comments about Panasonic Leica DG Summilux 25mm f/1.4 ASPH. Lens:

This is my favourite lens on olympys omd em10. The IQ is very similar to leitz 28 2,8 R. An extra bonus is 1,4 apperature and a half decent autofocus.
It has some quirks. On olympuses the camera has to be adjusted right ( try google search). If not it makes rattlesnake sounds an autofocuses slow. The sun shade is enormous,so I replaced it with a chinese vented one which works great. If you only get on mft lens, this is the one.

This lens is light, sharp, quick, bright. I can't say enough good things about it. I had to order an ND for it though, to shoot video at 50th shutter speed in bright sunlight. All I needed was one stop so a 0.3 ND was perfect. (I uploaded sample photos and now see my exposure compensation needs to be reset back to 0 now that I have a ND filter) Both photos shot without the ND.

I read great things about this lens, so I got a used one on eBay. I thought that it would have considerably better resolution and clairty than my current 14-45mm zoom lens. I took test photos from both lenses, with the zoom lens set at 25 mm. And both lenses were set in the neighborhood of f/4. I then zoomed in on the photos on iPhoto, and I was surprised to find that the Leica lens was just slightly better than the 14-45 mm lens.

My primary weapon is my E-M1 with grip loaded with either the 12-40 F2.8 or my new behemoth 40-150 F2.8. But I also carry an E-M5 loaded with a prime lens for targets of opportunity at weddings and indoor events. For all things indoor natural light, this lens is my goto glass. The zoomies just can't touch the performance of a quality fast prime in these situations. I avoid flash in these situations every way I can so I can capture the ambience of the environment. I'm an unrepentant gear junkie, and so the idea of 'if I only had one lens' is alien to me. If I only had ten lenses is more my style. But hypothetically, if I only had one lens then I must reluctantly confess this would be the one.

Perfect match to my Olympus E M5. Fast, accurate focus in high and low light. Clean, lovely images at all apertures. The Olympus lens stabilisation and the low light performance of the Summilux are a fantasy to this old shooter who grew up pushing Tri-X and shooting the Leica at 1/15. I'm confident getting detailed shots at 1/4, possibly lower. It is quiet, solid and, to these old hands, weighs nothing. What's not to love ?
