After reading many of the reviews here, I was leaning toward getting the 40mm f/2.8 Micro-Nikkor (as a birthday gift from my wife), but I wanted to talk with the B&H staff about macro lens use and get a recommendation. Steve showed me the four Nikkor macro lenses. He said that the key factor was how far away from my subjects I expected to be. He pointed out that my 18-300mm zoom Nikkor could function as a quasi-macro lens at full zoom. I tried the 40mm macro and the 105mm VR macro, both f/2.8 lenses. Largely because of price I decided on the 40mm, with the idea that I would try it out on the High Line elevated garden that very morning and decide whether I wanted to keep or return it. I'm keeping it. After using my lovely but heavy zoom lens with my D7100 for a year, I appreciated the lightness of the 40mm. The camera is also less conspicuous with the smaller lens, so candid photography was easier. I was able to get very close to the flowers I was photographing, making some perspectives possible by leaning over that would have been impossible if I'd had to be further from my subjects. What really impressed me after loading the pics into Aperture was how good many of the images looked when enlarged. See the two enlargements below for examples. I used auto-focus with normal program (P) metering on the flower pic and manual focus with aperture priority (A) metering on the bee pic.

Great for jewelry photography

Comments about Nikon AF-S DX Micro-NIKKOR 40mm f/2.8G Lens:

I bought this lens to use for photographing jewelry, specifically pearls. It has been hard to capture the luster but I am noting with this lens that has changed. There is a color richness and clarity present in the photos; this lens even allows me to catch the glimmer of diamonds. A very good purchase! Very pleased!

Great for studio cat photography

Comments about Nikon AF-S DX Micro-NIKKOR 40mm f/2.8G Lens:

I've been using for a few months to do cat photography in the animal shelter. It is working well! Allows me some shooting in the lower light. The focal length and the minimum focusing distance allows me to stay near the cat ( so it doesn't jump off the studio table) but still get the shot even closer up.

Comments about Nikon AF-S DX Micro-NIKKOR 40mm f/2.8G Lens:

This lens, along with the slide copy adapter makes for a very good set-up to make digital images of slides. I have a lot of slides I need to transfer into a digital format. I am using my speed light with them. Fast. Easy set-up. I don't think you could improve on this combination.

Primarily I'll be using the lens for slide/film copying with my D7100. After an initial test it out performs all my other Nikon equipment in this area.

Cool Lens

Comments about Nikon AF-S DX Micro-NIKKOR 40mm f/2.8G Lens:

This is not a professional lens. However, I would say it is in a mid range pro level due its versatility taking some macro photos and portrait photos. Shooting video the lens also works great. So far the lens has been working great so my rating is 5 mostly due its versatility even if its not a pro lens I could say the amateur or more experienced photographer can do interesting things with this lens "A nice lens in your learnign curve for being a professional photographer"

Excellent lens for macro with the DX camera

By Steven

Comments about Nikon AF-S DX Micro-NIKKOR 40mm f/2.8G Lens:

The size of this macro lens was the big draw for me, I have the 60mm and 105mm macro lenses for the full size señor but since I mostly use the DX sensor this lens fix better with my travel gear. So far it's sharp, even at ƒ2.8 so I know it will be even better at ƒ8 or higher.

Typical rugged Nikon construction and materials.

Comments about Nikon AF-S DX Micro-NIKKOR 40mm f/2.8G Lens:

Sweet lens for micro. Lightweight and crystal clear. No apparent distortion. Great for flowers, feathers and other still life compositions. Looking forward to candid environmental portraits and street scenes in the near future. B & H worked with my budget and suggested this lens. I appreciate their suggestion, because it fits my needs exactly.

Very good lens you should get this.

Comments about Nikon AF-S DX Micro-NIKKOR 40mm f/2.8G Lens:

This is an amazing lens that just about covers it from macro (although you have to get in closer to your subject but that is no problem} to portrait to street photography I have been using this lens exclusively for awhile now it is light weight compared to using the big zoom lens. 40mm covers a good range and the pictures are nice sharp and crisp just takes a little practice and patience to get that good macro shot. Overall this is a good buy.

A Little Gem

By kenlarry

Comments about Nikon AF-S DX Micro-NIKKOR 40mm f/2.8G Lens:

Great Nikon quality at affordable price. This little gem is light so you can carry it around all day with virtually no strain. Close up and macro shooting is a breeze with pleasant bokeh at 2.8. The 60mm focal length and the 2.8 aperture provide excellent flexibility if you're in a low light situation and in general if you want to walk around with just one lens for a day or longer.

Comments about Nikon AF-S DX Micro-NIKKOR 40mm f/2.8G Lens:

As a Semi-pro photographer who has shot over 100,000+ thousand pictures using a Hasselblad Lunar, Canon 5DS R, Canon 6D, Canon 7D, and now a recently purchased Nikon D7200. Along with the acquisition of the D7200, I also purchased a Nikkor AF-S DX Micro-NIKKOR 40mm f/2.8G Lens for its macro capability. I used the AF function on the lens to test the accuracy of its silent wave motor. From the onset, the lens has rendered beautiful and clear pictures as the two attached photos demonstrate. Nikon has deliver a quality macro lens at an affordable price that macro photographers will love.

a new addition to the dynasty

Comments about Nikon AF-S DX Micro-NIKKOR 40mm f/2.8G Lens:

the oldest nikon in my collection is a 1967-73 nikkormat ftn followed by a 1974 nikon ftn, a 1977 nikon f-2as, a f-3 & a f-4 I no longer own & I was ushered into the digital age by the D300 & the D7000. nikkor lenses to numerous to mention many of which I still own. the bottom line is my lifetime of nikon has only required one repair, (a nikonos III) I managed to break myself. the lenses are spectacular and the new ones seem to be better and better. I bought this micro nikkor because of the reputation of this lineage for distortion free image quality and it seem like the most logical way to digitize a life time of kodachromes
