After reading many of the reviews here, I was leaning toward getting the 40mm f/2.8 Micro-Nikkor (as a birthday gift from my wife), but I wanted to talk with the B&H staff about macro lens use and get a recommendation. Steve showed me the four Nikkor macro lenses. He said that the key factor was how far away from my subjects I expected to be. He pointed out that my 18-300mm zoom Nikkor could function as a quasi-macro lens at full zoom. I tried the 40mm macro and the 105mm VR macro, both f/2.8 lenses. Largely because of price I decided on the 40mm, with the idea that I would try it out on the High Line elevated garden that very morning and decide whether I wanted to keep or return it. I'm keeping it. After using my lovely but heavy zoom lens with my D7100 for a year, I appreciated the lightness of the 40mm. The camera is also less conspicuous with the smaller lens, so candid photography was easier. I was able to get very close to the flowers I was photographing, making some perspectives possible by leaning over that would have been impossible if I'd had to be further from my subjects. What really impressed me after loading the pics into Aperture was how good many of the images looked when enlarged. See the two enlargements below for examples. I used auto-focus with normal program (P) metering on the flower pic and manual focus with aperture priority (A) metering on the bee pic.

I wanted to add a macro lens to my arsenal and this was a great little lens for that. This lens is pretty versatile, so I'll be keeping it in my bag with me on most of my shoots.

Very sharp photos from this lens. Worked great on our trip around Lake Superior taking fall color photos and taking water fall photos at 1/15 of a sec.

Comments about Nikon AF-S DX Micro-NIKKOR 40mm f/2.8G Lens:

I wasn't sure if I really needed a macro lens because I had another lens that I could use that wasn't specifically for close ups but I am very pleased and I have no regrets about buying this lens. Razor sharp images, beautiful colors and pleasing bokeh! The price was reasonable too.

Best in it's class.

Comments about Nikon AF-S DX Micro-NIKKOR 40mm f/2.8G Lens:

I have owed and shot the Nikon, 200, 100, and 60 mm micro lenses. I would say, for the money, this Nikon AF-S DX Micro-NIKKOR 40mm f/2.8G Lens is the best in it's class. That is, in the 40 mm micro class. It is exceptionally light and easy to use. If I was just starting my trip into Micro, this would be the first lens I would buy. Now, that said, when using this lens you have to get much closer than with the Nikon 200 mm. So, if your photographing snakes, bees, or other stingers you may want to consider a longer micro. But for flowers and other general close up work, this is a great lens. I have always loved my 60 mm micro and will always use it for product photography. But now when I am in the field shooting landscapes, this lens will now find it's way into my bag containing the Nikon 14-24 and 16-35 landscape lenses. The 40 mm has outstanding Image Quality and depth of field is super when stopped down. So, if your beginning your adventure into Micro, this lens is a great way to start. You will not be disappointed.

Excellent Lens, Good Value

Picked this up along with a Nikon ES-1 Slide Copying Adapter. The combo works very well, and the lens sharpness is excellent.

Great for jewelry photography

Comments about Nikon AF-S DX Micro-NIKKOR 40mm f/2.8G Lens:

I bought this lens to use for photographing jewelry, specifically pearls. It has been hard to capture the luster but I am noting with this lens that has changed. There is a color richness and clarity present in the photos; this lens even allows me to catch the glimmer of diamonds. A very good purchase! Very pleased!

Great for studio cat photography

Comments about Nikon AF-S DX Micro-NIKKOR 40mm f/2.8G Lens:

I've been using for a few months to do cat photography in the animal shelter. It is working well! Allows me some shooting in the lower light. The focal length and the minimum focusing distance allows me to stay near the cat ( so it doesn't jump off the studio table) but still get the shot even closer up.

Comments about Nikon AF-S DX Micro-NIKKOR 40mm f/2.8G Lens:

This lens, along with the slide copy adapter makes for a very good set-up to make digital images of slides. I have a lot of slides I need to transfer into a digital format. I am using my speed light with them. Fast. Easy set-up. I don't think you could improve on this combination.

Primarily I'll be using the lens for slide/film copying with my D7100. After an initial test it out performs all my other Nikon equipment in this area.
