I have finally had a chance to test this Tiffen 77mm Variable Neutral Density Filter.

1) This filter is able to use 77mm lens caps on the inner ring to protect the glass from damage. You do not need to purchase another cap to cover the external diameter. However you cannot attach any other filter in front of it. But you still can behind the filter.
2) I have tested this filter in a constant lighting room and was able to get 5 to 7 stops of light fall off . This is fantastic as you do not need to carry multiple filters or a lens filter system. For the convenience of space and weight this is ideal for travel photographers. The box claims 2-8 stops (ND 0.6-2.4) of light drop off. My Cokin system has a set of 3 ND filters of 0.3-0.9. I tended to use the 0.6-(0.9+0.6) range so this Tiffen filter still has a better dynamic range.
3) Once you start towards darkening the filter towards the extreme there are some things to consider. a) The color shifts towards magenta at darkest extremes. I noticed this only at the 6-7 stop extreme of darkening. b) When you start to darken to 4 stops you start to get vignetting, and at 5 stops you start to see the bend of an X starting to cross the frame. I tested this vignetting on a APS-C camera sensor with a Tokina 11-16 lens at 13mm. The manual claims that this is a limiting factor while using 2 separate polarization filters on top.
4) When you keep the same density constant, but physically rotate the filter, color will change from yellow to blue. I am guessing these are the 2 polarization's that Tiffen used for the extreme colors to meet evening while in use. Thus I suggest that you properly tighten the filter to be the most even color before you take any pictures or video. Or if you change your camera from landscape to portrait, be aware this could shift the color. I mostly notice this color shift off reflective surfaces.

I personally can find the following uses for this filter:
1) You are now able to reduce your flash sync speed to a level you can now use your flash under the 1/200 or so speed outdoors
2) Able to use shallow depth of field apertures outdoors.
3) To use slower shutter speeds for silky motion of clouds and water.
4) For video work, you can now use the ideal frame rate speed.

I am overall giving this filter 4/5 with the intention of if you know exactly what type of density you need, then I would suggest getting a single filter, especially at such a darker density as the light will be more even for the exposure, and the color won't be distracting. Otherwise I find this filter a great bargain for having the ability to include such a large dynamic range of light for a single filter.

The design of this filter is compact in comparison to stacking ND filters, however it is large enough that I cannot use it with my lens hoods.

The "Max" setting, combined with f/22 aperture, allowed me to shoot into the sun. There is considerable vignetting, though. On my 5DmkII, the edges of the filter are in frame at the corners below 40mm.

This filter will allow you to turn beyond the "Max" position. doing this introduces anomalies of uneven exposure across the frame - just as warned by the package enclosure. This effect is not seen within the normal operating range.

When doing long exposure images during sunset this failed me. FOr really darkening down its okay. But in between you do get the x or vignetting. Might stick to graduated filters for now.

I was aiming to avoid using HSS on my flashes during bright sunny days and this ND filter does exactly that. Thanks to the tip from Anthony Scott, this filter extends battery life thus the amount of flashes during sunny days.

Solid nice filter

Comments about Tiffen 77mm Variable Neutral Density Filter:

Very good filter, I use variable nds for video as it's faster and easier to expose for your shot on the fly. Especially when using a gimbal. Try to avoid the max of the filter or going past it as you will get vignetting. I also own the tiffen 4 pack of nds which are beautiful but tough to use for critical moments with extreme differences of light. That is why I decided to go with the variable.

Comments about Tiffen 77mm Variable Neutral Density Filter:

Nine settings of ND is great, but it's a pain that you have to remove the Hood off of the 70-200mm 2.8 lens in order to first mount it and once on, the lens hood remains off.

Just an FYI about the trade off.

Comments about Tiffen 77mm Variable Neutral Density Filter:

I'm going to the Arctic, land of the midnight sun, and after playing with this lens, I believe it will be perfect and allow me to only carry one ND filter for slowing down water and waterfalls. So far, so good as long as you stay within the min/max. Otherwise, past "max" you get weirdness.

Just didn't Work

Comments about Tiffen 77mm Variable Neutral Density Filter:

This filter gave 1.7 to 3.5 more or less usable stops of attenuation on my 5D3.  Beyond 3.5 stops, the light attenuation was just unacceptably blotchy with a diagonal bright bone shaped bar.  I'll stick with my conventional neutral density filters.

Huge ND range

Comments about Tiffen 77mm Variable Neutral Density Filter:

1-9 stops of ND is insane! Although right out of the box the filter when turned felt 'gritty' as if there was some sand in there. This obviously doesn't affect picture but is slightly annoying. Easy to use and bigger than I was expecting.

Great Product Only One Problem

By George

Comments about Tiffen 77mm Variable Neutral Density Filter:

It does the job. Hard stops would be nice. only problem is that I have the filter stacked on a uv filter and the dot used to know approximately what your current stop is at is located at the bottom of the lens and is hard to know what you are at without straining your neck. I wish that part Of the filter was adjustable otherwise great quality and works like it should.
