I love this recorder, but Tascam could have included some form of protection for carrying it, even if only a cloth bag. Looking around the internet I found that a Pelican 1040 case is just the right size to store/protect the DR-40 and an Audio-Technica AT8202 attenuator. The attenuator is a must have if you are going to tap into a dj or band's sound, for their signals are often too strong, even when dialing down external input levels to the DR-40's lowest setting. My unit came with an older firmware, 1.02, but upgrading to the current 1.20 firmware is very easy - Tascam even offers instructions on their website. In all I'm very happy with this purchase.

Let me start by saying my expectations for this product were set high from everything I'd read. Probably too high given the very affordable [$] price. It meets my expectations 100% except for the amount of noise it induces. I got Tascam support on the phone and verified that what I was seeing is normal. To make a long story short . . . with the input gain all the way up (had to do this for several mics I own) the noise floor is around -40Db. With no mics even plugged into the unit the meters and Db display show a -40DB, un-steady, signal. The noise comes out easily using post-processing (Adobe Audition in my case) but I did not expect to have to do this.

Meets but does not exceed expectations for price.

Comments about DR-40 4-Track Handheld Digital Audio Recorder (Black):

I've only used it as a recorder for my Sound Devices Mix-Pre D so I won't evaluate the on-board microphones or preamp circuits.

It records audio fine with enough connectors to make it useful for prosumer production work.

It's got some really, really bizarre design issues, though:
1) No built-in clock battery so _every time_ you swap out AA batteries, you have to reset the clock.
2) Shallow mounting point means I have to put a washer in-between screw and thread.
3) Inaccessible battery compartment when mounted.
4) The WORST: SD card slot is covered by a rubber flap that is very, very difficult to open. It would make sense if the DR-40 were weather-sealed but it isn't. So, be sure to put a big card in there, otherwise you're going to give your fingernails a workout.

Comments about DR-40 4-Track Handheld Digital Audio Recorder (Black):

For the money this is a decent recorder. The quality of the sound so far has been quite remarkable. I have used it primarily for interviews but will be using it for music events as well. It has a nice mix of simple easy to get to menus with some switches that would work for those things you might often change. For example adding phantom power is just the push of a switch. That is alot easier than my Roland recorder. I do prefer the rotary knobs on the Roland but you must remember the Roland is likely more than double the price of the Tascam DR 40. So that is a minor issue. The size and weight seem quite reasonable. I bought it for shoots where I did not want to carry a ton of gear.. Going overseas etc. But I would not compromise on sound quality and this Tascam is more than adequate ...very good sound quality... I am not sure how much abuse the plastic housing can take but then again the Roland is pretty much all plastic as well. All in all a great recorder, versatile and reasonably priced ODDLY enough this unit has gone up in price by $20. Nickel and dimers.

I've bought and used a lot of different recorders but this one has the best battery life by far. The 4 track recording is a big plus too. All around great run and gun field recorder.

Nice quality. It took a little time for me to understand how to work it and I thought about buying a more simpler model but after watching a few youtube videos I have mastered the basics. For the most part I like it..

It's cheaper than a Zoom and seems to have the same functionality. I'm not a pro, but for recording interviews for podcasting it works fine.

RF Interference Affects the DR-40 a lot

By Scott

Comments about DR-40 4-Track Handheld Digital Audio Recorder (Black):

In a general sense the unit sounds great and does what it's supposed to. I've put it head to head with the Zoom H4n and these recorders are more the same than they are different. There are plenty of reviews and demos of these devices online, so I don't need to mention what's already widely discussed. But one issue that does not receive a lot of attention is RF interference which these days is quite ubiquitous. Having used both the Tascam DR-40 and the Zoom H4n, both devices are susceptible to RF interference.  This was quite surprising to me and very disappointing.  When I was filming at an airport, both units picked up chirping noises from the airport radar at 4 second intervals corresponding to the sweep of the radar.  At home, laptops, cell phones, wireless routers, if placed too close to the unit, produces buzzing, clicking, and chirping noises that will ruin recordings.  However, I found that with the DR-40 this interference was worse, sometimes much worse than the H4n.  There's no easy way to test for RF interference since it depends on both proximity and orientation of both the interference source and the recorder.  Interference is often directional but can enter the unit from various points, and it's hard to know where those points are.  I experimented with this a lot and I determined that the DR-40 is simply worse.  The H4n isn't great, but it's much more manageable.  In the end, this was the factor that made me decide in favor of the H4n.  The DR-40 is a little bit more user friendly, but I have to go with performance, and for me the H4n is better.

We purchased this to replace a damaged unit. We liked that it came in bronze so it would be easy to distinguish as the new one. This is the second version of this model. We are very happy with our purchase.

A solid field recorder for folks on a budget

Comments about DR-40 4-Track Handheld Digital Audio Recorder (Black):

I've used a bunch of other Tascam products in the past, and this one lives up to the name. For the pricetag, it's a solid recorder that has a bunch of useful features (like optional 4-channel recording, repositional mics, etc.). Currently using it for podcast recording, and I like how small/lightweight it is. It does feel somewhat fragile (less sturdy build than higher-end recorders) and probably wouldn't survive much of a drop. But everything else about it is great.

Comments about DR-40 4-Track Handheld Digital Audio Recorder (Black):

I purchased this recorder a few years ago. It sat in my camera back and was only used a few times indoors. Recently I found that it will no longer turn out. Since the unit is out of warranty, Tascam will not fix or replace it. I would not recommend that you purchase a product that is so delicate. You don't want your recorder to fail at an important time.
