I love this recorder, but Tascam could have included some form of protection for carrying it, even if only a cloth bag. Looking around the internet I found that a Pelican 1040 case is just the right size to store/protect the DR-40 and an Audio-Technica AT8202 attenuator. The attenuator is a must have if you are going to tap into a dj or band's sound, for their signals are often too strong, even when dialing down external input levels to the DR-40's lowest setting. My unit came with an older firmware, 1.02, but upgrading to the current 1.20 firmware is very easy - Tascam even offers instructions on their website. In all I'm very happy with this purchase.

Let me start by saying my expectations for this product were set high from everything I'd read. Probably too high given the very affordable [$] price. It meets my expectations 100% except for the amount of noise it induces. I got Tascam support on the phone and verified that what I was seeing is normal. To make a long story short . . . with the input gain all the way up (had to do this for several mics I own) the noise floor is around -40Db. With no mics even plugged into the unit the meters and Db display show a -40DB, un-steady, signal. The noise comes out easily using post-processing (Adobe Audition in my case) but I did not expect to have to do this.

Poorly shielded, noisy preamps, fails without warning or error messages. It's so bad that I feel bad for selling it.

Easy to Use, Excellent Audio

Comments about DR-40 4-Track Handheld Digital Audio Recorder (Bronze):

I write magazine articles and use this recorder when conducting interviews. I have used recorders less expensive than this one and those that are more expensive. The Tascam DR-40 strikes a perfect balance between affordable price and ease of use. It's relatively small and produces crisp, clear audio with the onboard microphones, but I'll be adding a AKG D230 Omni-Directional Handheld Dynamic Microphone next week to take advantage of one of two XLR ports on the bottom of the recorder. I use the RC-3F 3-Way Footswitch with this recorder when transcribing my interviews. These two pieces of equipment make recording and transcribing conversations about as easy as it is going to get. I don't plan to use anything else for the foreseeable future.

I needed a way to record audio at weddings and didn't want to spend the money on wireless lavs. This was a much cheaper, yet still very crisp way for me to do that. Awesome purchase and I reccomend it for anyone looking for one track audio recording

Just used this on a week long project last week. Tested it beforehand and the audio was great. The batteries lasted all week through 4 -20 minute interviews.
The price was great and I feel confident now that I have audio back up for this projects.

Disappointing

Comments about DR-40 4-Track Handheld Digital Audio Recorder (Bronze):

I was excited about this recorder's feature set, overdubbing capability, and xlr inputs. The price is great too... but with external dynamic mic inputs or line inputs, the sound quality was poor. Returned it.

Did live recording with the in-built stereo mic that you can listen at:

and

I did compress the audio when synchronizing and producing the video.

Comments about DR-40 4-Track Handheld Digital Audio Recorder (Bronze):

Good sound quality, many options, easy to use.
Should have bought a wind shield to go with it.
I had some difficulties getting it to turn on initially, but otherwise it has been rock solid.

Good Sound quality

Comments about DR-40 4-Track Handheld Digital Audio Recorder (Bronze):

Took quite some time to set up to where the quality of sound was good. Once setup it does an excellent job. I use it to record Church Sermons in mp3 status to post to our website. I use the line in from the sound board. Originally when I set up I was getting sound from the built in speakers also and it was very annoying. I searched the internet and found what I was doing wrong and now works fine. Support is not real good on this but overall it is a good recorder.

I was into Zoom but realise that they don't have actual line input on them.
This Tascam have it.
It's easy to work and very intuitive.

Comments about DR-40 4-Track Handheld Digital Audio Recorder (Bronze):

Downgraded from the DR60. Was too big and this does pretty much all the same stuff but easier to travel with. My only complaint is battery life (light years ahead of zoom) and the mini usb, they should update to micro and allow charging.

amazingly handy

Comments about DR-40 4-Track Handheld Digital Audio Recorder (Bronze):

The built in mics are not very directional. In a quiet environment, they're great, if they're close to the source they're great. The real trick here is you record the ambient and pull stereo off a mixing board using 1/4" TS cables. You'll end up with two stereo tracks. You can then mix down to a single stereo track with nice room feel. You can even dial in the delay between the internal and external feeds. Not really too complicated, but most settings are via a menu. There's also an internal mixer so you can overdub.

Comments about DR-40 4-Track Handheld Digital Audio Recorder (Bronze):

I have 10 DR-40's for my classroom and have had very little trouble from them. I teach grades 9-12 and some of the students are very rough on the equipment but these have held up. I have had some for as long as 5 years. The sound quality is excellent, especially for the price.

Noisy pre-amps

Significant noise floor when using phantom power with shotgun and wired lavaliere microphones. Required post-processing in Audition to remove sound. Forced to switch to another product.

Excellent Audio Product from Tascam

By Keyring

Comments about DR-40 4-Track Handheld Digital Audio Recorder (Bronze):

The DR-40 has been and still is being used for voice overs in radio program production. It is portable so it can be ported to a quiet insulated room to make the 30 to 60 second voice overs as needed.
The DR-40 can and does fit on a video tripod so it can be adjusted to the required height allowing hand free recording for voicing extended and numerous takes without having to pause the recorder. It has been used to play back downloaded programs and listened to on headphones for optimal quality reviews. The recorded clips can be downloaded into a DAW or audio software and edited accordingly with ease. It has a wide range of features which have yet to be utilized in the future.
Overall, it has been a wise investment and hopefully the only investment for now and in the near future.
