Now I know what a "fluid" tripod head really is. If butter could be manufactured from steel, this is what it would be like. None of what you have heard about this tripod is an exaggeration. It really is that good. Even the tripod is better than expected. I can perfectly balance my Sony PXW-X70.

We bought 7 of these earlier this year after digging around and seeing good reviews on them. The head is fantastic, and we've had zero issues with them. The legs however are simply not durable, where the metal leg sections fit into the plastic, after repeated use they start coming apart. I'm not sure if they were just pressure fit or if they used an adhesive that was too weak but they don't stay together. Of the 7 sets, 4 of them have had sections separate. I'm sending them in for warranty repair.

More natural than my Manfrotto

Comments about Sachtler Ace M Fluid Head with 2-Stage Aluminum Tripod & Mid-Level Spreader:

I got this to take the place of my Manfrotto 502 with a Panasonic GH4 on it. I typically don't have that much weight on it – the camera, lens, lens shade, ND filter, audio recorder – so the size of the Manfrotto head seems overkill. Plus, you need both hands to make pan/tilt/lock adjustments. The Sachtler is smaller and has better ergonomics. And it is super smooth. I'm happy.

Still getting the hang of panning, but this does everything, including being able to undo the long knob underneath to adjust to level.

Comments about Sachtler Ace M Fluid Head with 2-Stage Aluminum Tripod & Mid-Level Spreader:

I have to give this five stars. The head alone is worth the admission price for this. I consider the legs a passable addition to the package, and one that makes this thing very lightweight and portable. You will be hard pressed to find a TRUE fluid head for this price. And NO those $150 Ravelli and Cowboystudio tripods are NOT real fluid heads. You should not be panning and tilting the camera while rolling on those things unless you want your video to look like it was shot by an 8th grade A/V club. You are buying this tripod because it provides stunning video and is quick to set up, level, adjust, and lightweight enough to carry around. The legs are clearly the weak point, along with the plastic material used around the tripod, which should be mentioned. The legs are "good enough". They will do and will likely serve you well provided that you pack it away properly and treat it well. This is not a tripod you can toss in your trunk without thinking, like it's a $2000 Miller tripod. This is great for a film student and passionate video producer on a budget who still knows what makes footage look good. The spreader connections look like they might fail at some point. I wish the head itself was primarily metal construction but nearly all of it (that i can see from the outside, including the knobs) is made of very durable plastic, but plastic nonetheless. The reason that the majority of this review focuses on the shortcomings is because you need to be aware of these before purchasing and that these are still reasonable for what you are gettting. Truly stunning tripod for the price. I believe also, that in the case that the sticks fail on you, that you can pick up another sturdier pair of 75mm ball sticks as replacement. Highly recommended

Comments about Sachtler Ace M Fluid Head with 2-Stage Aluminum Tripod & Mid-Level Spreader:

For indie DSLR filmmaking, great price for a genuine fluid head to get started on.

The legs may lack some in stability/build, but this is a fair tradeoff for its lightness and compactness.

Solid investment, as in the event I move on to more substantial pro tripods, I'll still want to keep this at the ready for get-up-and-go/guerrilla projects.

I'm a pro of 35 years. All I've ever used in the video world is a Sachtler. All the knobs are in the right place. The fluid head is like butter. And now with the age of the DSLR this tripod is the perfect sized for smaller cameras. It's the best! I've done this at home.

Comments about Sachtler Ace M Fluid Head with 2-Stage Aluminum Tripod & Mid-Level Spreader:

I have used dozens of tripods. Everything from top end Miller heads to manfrotto kit. That said I have no desire to bash the tripod, instead I would say go buy a $ dollar manfrotto kit it's the same quality. Neither of them so hard stops, they both have the same fluid motion etc. their just charging for he name here the quality just isn't there. Sachtlers upper end kits are amazing but this kit doesn't quite live up to he quality for price.

Comments about Sachtler Ace M Fluid Head with 2-Stage Aluminum Tripod & Mid-Level Spreader:

After using one of these as a rental (was a pretty new piece of gear too) for a PGA golf tournament last weekend I have to pause to write a review.

Flat out, you get what you pay for. The head is decent and provides smooth motion. From the head down though...this will not last long in a rigorous production environment. Period. The legs were sticky so I constantly had to balance everything precariously to "unstick" a leg to extend it. Overall it felt cheap and flimsy. The ball adjustment was one of the worst I've ever used. Not only did it stick but it was extremely awkward. The adjustment is a really long hand grip that as you try to position the head ends up hitting the legs thus limiting the movement. There were several instances where I couldn't get my hand in to loosen it. When you are run and gun this is unacceptable.

I really wanted to like it. But I have to admit that I'm really glad I rented one before I bought one. Granted it's going to cost me alot more but when getting that shot is all that matters....your sticks can't be a problem. And this one was.

I guess its my fault for using a light duty tripod in a high pressure/demand environment but I expected more from Sachtler.

Comments about Sachtler Ace M Fluid Head with 2-Stage Aluminum Tripod & Mid-Level Spreader:

I used the tripod heavily for just over a year and loved it. Great size and weight. Traveled all over and mostly shooting on a C100. I have both this and the CF Ace L.

The fluid head is truly great but I the lower section of the leg fall out. It's a hard piece to repair yourself and customer service was so-so. It's currently being sent in for repair but just thought I'd write a review to let people know.

The carbon fiber version is worth the money if you can spare it. much lighter and more durable. super flexible and can be used in many scenarios. nice bag too.

Comments about Sachtler Ace M Fluid Head with 2-Stage Aluminum Tripod & Mid-Level Spreader:

Overall, I'm very happy with these sticks. the head is very fluid and of high quality -as I would expect from a sachtler. The legs are sturdy enough for a light, run/gun rig and I love that I can use the spreader to snap them open and closed quickly (can't do this with manfrotto spreaders), though I'm not a big fan of the wing-nut stage locks -I prefer latches or -even better- a quick release latch that unlocks all stages of the tripod at once as I've seen before. Also, although I like a ball claw, when I'm running and gunning, I'd prefer a neck, so I can raise/lower the tripod quickly (I may be alone in that, but it's all about speed when I grab my light sticks). One note: the ball claw doesn't have much range of motion.

I really wish somebody would design a good, light set of sticks that is really built with speed in mind. This, as with most light sticks I've found, is just a lighter design of most heavier tripods out there. When I grab my heavy tripod, I don't care about speed -I just want fluidity and stability. But when I grab my light sticks, I need to be able to move, adjust, balance, spread, raise, etc. with speed. Having to unscrew each leg lock to extend the legs if I want to raise the camera a foot takes too much time.

However, I'm still giving it 5 stars because these are my needs/wants -and others may want different. For the price, this is a great tripod.

Smooth pans and tilts, and the legs are pretty sturdy for a DSLR, as long as you don't have a bunch of other gear rigged up onto it.

Can't beat it for the price.

I have 5 tripods, used for recording veteran stories, community documentaries, and family histories. The Ace fluid head has rapidily become my favorite. I've found it to be smooth, stable, and user friendly. If care is taken, it even yields acceptable performance with cameras heavier than the advertised 8 pound limit.

This is my first Sachtler and so far I love it. I have it for location work with a small lightweight 4k camera. I have a need to set up quick shoot and move on. This baby levels quick, the legs expand quick and movements are super smooth. Wish it was a little lighter, but I can handle that until it makes me more money and I can upgrade to carbon.

I'd bet there is not comparable option for under $1000. The head is worth more, so smooth, even panning with 200mm lens. The legs do the job, and if you are doing a lot of run and gun, you will like the mid level spreader for quick collapses and getting the legs out even quickly.Excellent. [$] is a steal.

My first four tri-pods were rather inexpensive Sanford & Davis models with fluid heads. They worked nice for a few months, and then they got loose. And zoom video work was impossible without annoying shake and drift.I needed a good tri-pod and head for an upcoming wedding, but I just couldn't afford the $+ cost of the great sticks... so I bought this Ace.Overall, it's pretty nice. The dampers and friction knobs are nice. The lock-down tabs are convenient and can be used without camera shake. It's light enough, easy enough to move around. But it clatters a lot on tiled surfaces (ie: churches). It's a good buy -- and definitely an upgrade to the $ tri-pods I've burned through. Save yourself the trouble and get one if you're looking for an inexpensive workhorse. Sachtler quality as cheap as it's gonna get.

I own and have use many different tripods, for this price range you can't beat the Sachtler Ace M. If you are a professional or know tripods, this is the BEST choice in it's price range, look no further! It has the smoothest head of any tripod in it's price class that I've used, and it is a true fluid head. The drag on both the pan and tilt are a little tight, but then it's not fair to compare it to a multi thousand dollar Sachtler 18 II head which I own, or even their thousand dollar heads, and expect it to be as fluid. If you can afford it, the Sachtler Ace L is better, lighter, has more and smoother drag control, and holds heavier cameras.
