I have several larger tripods(Gitzo) but I needed a smaller and lighter tripod for traveling, hiking and backpacking. Even fully extended it is stable enough for lighter cameras. For macro applications it can be used with legs reversed - column facing down.
It benefits from a high quality head. I am using an Arca Swiss P0 which works great on it. For transportation the legs can be reversed to achieve the smallest length and this also works with this tripod head perfectly (see picture).

This is a tripod I would love to love, but...

It is incredibly small and lightweight, making it perfect for travel or backpacking. A little short (even fully extended) so if you are pushing 6 ft tall it will leave you hunched over.

It appears to be very well made. Nice fit and finish, good appearance, quality materials, etc.

The downsides are significant. Sirui engineers have seen fit to make the leg angle too narrow which in turn has significant impact on stability. The footprint is just too small. Combine the small footprint with the long center column to bring it up to usable height (even longer when the extension is added) and the thing becomes unusabley unstable on anything but the flattest, firmest of surfaces.

Spreading the legs introduces a new set of problems since it not only lowers the tripod, but now the lowest/smallest leg sections begin to flex under the weight of attached gear.

To be fair, I am not using lightweight gear on this thing. Commonly a Canon 7d and 24-105 L or Tokina 11-16 lens. Forget putting a 100-400 L lens on it!

The best use I have found is for those low to the ground shots with the ultrawide lense, but I could use a mini tripod just as well at a fraction of the price for those.

All that said, a few days ago I carried this thing on a 7 mile hike through a wilderness area and loved its light weight. Got some good, low shutter speed shots of some waterfalls, but I just can't get over how unstable the thing feels set up when I have a couple grand of gear sitting on top of it.

If you buy, be very aware of the tradeoffs you are making with this tripod. It could be perfect for some, while others will find it of marginal or even poor functionality.

Makes other lightweight tripods seem heavy by comparison

By Lee O'C

Comments about Sirui T-1205X 5-Section Carbon Fiber Tripod:

I am super satisfied with this Sirui T-1205X tripod. It is the lightest tripod I could find and it folds up to a compact size that I can easily stash in a shoulder bag. I use a lightweight ball head on the tripod to keep it as light as possible. On hiking trips and visits to old bunkers it has proved reliable for holding up my Canon 5dmkii and Tamron 24-70mm lens.

Comments about Sirui T-1205X 5-Section Carbon Fiber Tripod:

This is a small, light and great quality build tripod I was looking for to take with me on my bike trips, but not only. I'm photo enthusiast, I shoot with Canon 6D with 16-35F4 for landscape and occasionally 100F2.8 for macro, this tripod was exactly what I was hoping for. I've found that fully extended (legs and long middle column up) it's not super stable for long exposure/timelapse, much better with the long column down or with the short column, or some sections folded, but considering the size and the weight - it's still performing better then expected, the shots are perfectly sharp. I've taken long exposure shots on a super windy days and they came out perfect. I've combined it with the Sirui K-10x ballhead, which is more then enough with the gear I use. The rubberized half-twist legs locks are making the open/fold operation super easy, no hassle at all. I really love this tripod as travel or for daily use.

Comments about Sirui T-1205X 5-Section Carbon Fiber Tripod:

I like this tripod because it's small and lightweight, perfect for the day to day work that I do with interior photography. Unfortunately, the inner parts of the legs that are made to help the legs tighten and loosen and extend are cheaply made. Mine began to break about 3 months into using it (I use it about 5 days a week). Today the final part of one of the rings that tighten and loosen a segment of one leg completely broke. I now cannot extend one of the legs.

I cannot recommend buying this tripod despite liking it for its weight and size.

Comments about Sirui T-1205X 5-Section Carbon Fiber Tripod:

This tripod is extremely light and compact. I used it with my Canon 5D2 for night shots of the Golden Gate Bridge. Although I got a few perfectly steady shots, most of the frames had at least some slight blurring. It seems this tripod is very sensitive to movement, at least with a heavy DSLR. I exchanged it for the slightly heavier Sirui T2005x model. I can still recommend this tripod for use with lighter cameras.

Comments about Sirui T-1205X 5-Section Carbon Fiber Tripod:

This lightweight and compact tripod folds down to easily fit into a backpack or carry-on bag. I've used it to successfully take long exposures up to 30 seconds with a Canon 5D2 and 24-105 lens. Like all light tripods, slight movements near the tripod can cause even tiny picture blur. You have to be careful to stay clear while the shutter is open, and be careful how you let go of the cable release. For long exposures I used it half extended. It comes with a very well made case and also a strap you can use with any tripod, plus hex wrenches to firmly attach a head.

Comments about Sirui T-1205X 5-Section Carbon Fiber Tripod:

I ordered this tripod along with three FEISOL tripods (3332, 3441S, 3442T) to determine the best sanely priced carbon fiber tripod for a particular use case—specifically, supporting a Fujifilm X-T1 with primes and smaller zooms when hiking and/or traveling with weight and/or size restrictions.

Coming in at exactly 2 lbs, the T-1205X is my choice. Mated with the fantastic Markins Q3i ballhead, it is a mere 2.5 lbs and folds to only 14" long. This is less than half the weight and size of my already light Gitzo GT3541LS tripod with Acratech head and leveling base.

The T-1205X is the first 5-section tripod I have tried. I was a little worried about the extra hassle of another 3 twist locks but I needn't have been. It did not prove to be a big deal. I also didn't find there to be an obvious reduction in stability because of this. The FEISOL tripods were all four section models and the T-1205X was competitive with them.

Of course, the T-1205X is not as tall or stable as my Gitzo; it is a tool for a different job. But it is tall enough and stable enough to be useful in those situations where taking my Gitzo with me is just not an option.

The tripod comes with a short center column that can replace the longer column or attach to it for added length. Because the legs don't fold back compactly with the short column by itself—they are significantly splayed out—I can't imagine a scenario where I would leave the short center permanently attached except if using the tripod as a dedicated macro tripod where folded length is not important.

The included tripod case, made of a heavy duty cordura-type fabric with heavy duty zipper, is very nice. It is well padded and large enough to store the tripod with head attached and short center column in an interior pocket.

This tripod is not inexpensive but it offers significant value to the buyer with quality construction and the inclusion of the bag and short center column, extras that you would pay for with some other brands. At some point I will publish [elsewhere] a longer, more comprehensive review of all four of the tripods I considered but for now I'll just say that this Sirui represents a solid choice where size and weight are significant factors in your choice.

Comments about Sirui T-1205X 5-Section Carbon Fiber Tripod:

This is a great lightweight tripod. It feels amazingly stable given its size and weight.

I use it for my 2 mirror less systems with great results.

The main reason I decided to submit a review is a recent great experience with the customer service. I often use my tripod as a walking stick when negotiating rocky seaside terrain in Maine. I got the leg wedged between two rocks with my full weight on it and cracked the lower leg. I called customer service and had a new leg in 2 days. It was easy to replace so I'm now back happily shooting.

The Sirui fit the bill because it is light, yet seems comfortably stable for my D600 w/24-70. I've not taken it outdoors yet, but inside it allowed me to take some wonderful shots so far.

Comments about Sirui T-1205X 5-Section Carbon Fiber Tripod:

I bought this item specifically for backpacking trips. As advertised it is light and compact, it fit easily into my backpack and added little weight. I did find it is not the most stable when used with the legs opened at their smallest angle from vertical (fyi, my camera and lens weighed approximately 4 lbs). I caught it a few times tipping over on this setting. After that I made sure to spread the legs more or to keep the camera strap in my hand to make certain it didn't tip over. Despite this issue it met all my needs and I'm glad I purchased this item. Good value for the price.

Comments about Sirui T-1205X 5-Section Carbon Fiber Tripod:

I purchased this tripod because I wanted a lightweight, compact tripod I could take with me pretty much anywhere, but particularly on hikes for landscape photography. I also wanted something with a decent load weight and good quality so it would last a long time as I upgrade equipment over the years (I currently have a Canon Rebel T4i). This tripod has filled this need very well. I know with a larger, heavier tripod, I would leave it behind. Adding a ball head adds weight but the I purchased the G-10 and it fits almost totally within the legs when folded so does not add to the folded length. I also found the twisting legs very quick and easy to setup and back fold-down. It also comes with a good quality carrying case. Only negative is it can be a tad unstable when full extended was the last section of the legs are quite thin. There is a hook to add extra weight (e.g. hang your backpack) to help with that if needed.

Comments about Sirui T-1205X 5-Section Carbon Fiber Tripod:
