I'm an old professional who's owned several 85mm lenses in my career. I'm using this on a D600 FX body and it is now one of my favorite lenses of all time! It's lightweight and compact and has gorgeous image quality--sharp all the way out to the corners, great contrast, lovely color depth, and snappy autofocus. I use it mostly for portraiture and landscape work. The boheh at f2.8-4 (where I usually shoot) is beautifully smooth and creamy. This is a wonderful lens.I used to own the f1.4 manual focus version, but found that lens too heavy and not that useful at f1.4; for portraits you often need enough depth of field to get both eyes and ears in focus, so I never shot wide open anyway. The image quality of this 1.8 lens nearly matches the f1.4 version, and far surpasses the f1.8D version that I also oned. This 1.8G is definitely my favorite 85mm that I ever owned.

1st Copy: Severe Front Focus Issue
2nd Copy: Weather seal has a lot of micro cracks.

I give 3 stars for optical performance (substract 1 star each from 1st and 2nd copies). If Nikon quality control was tighten, this lens is a very good performer.

I would recommand this lens, BUT user needs to thoroughly inspect the build quality and check focus accuracy.

This lens blows me away

Comments about Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 85mm f/1.8G Lens:

I was a bit skeptical that I wouldn't use this lens that much given it's focal length. But recent I started doing in studio fashion/beauty shots and I have to say, the images I get with this lens and my D750 are just unbelievably sharp, almost to a fault (not really), but yes, with some people post processing is necessary to dull things down a bit. This lens has quickly risen to the top of the list of my go-to lens. When I bought it I was nagged by thinking I need to spend 3X more for the 1.4 - nah. I can't image there could be that much difference between the two. I love this lens.

Best Bang for You Buck!

Comments about Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 85mm f/1.8G Lens:

I had wanted to get an 85mm prime lens for some time but never did. I finally pulled the trigger in early Apr. 2017 and I couldn't be happier with this lens. I had rented and shot with the f/1.4G version of the lens but I was not happy due to its softness wide open. Once stopped down to f/1.8 it is amazing, but the softness at f/1.4 defeats the purpose of having it to begin with. Not to mention the cost. I really didn't feel the value in it. I had heard wonderful thing about this lens and even seen samples verifying that it is sharp wide open. Straight out of the box and onto either my Nikon D700 or D750, the lens is indeed tack sharp wide open. These are the pros and cons as I see them.

Pros

Tack sharp wide open. The reason I passed on the f/1.4 is the specifically because it wasn't tack sharp wide open and for the cost, you can get a Sigma 85 f/1.4 which is. I am a semi-pro so I can't dish out the cash for those. Let's be honest, unless they're told an image was shot with a specific lens, no one is the wiser.

Cost. Talk about bang for buck, this lens delivers, and it is well suited for any pro gig.

Build. The build is quite nice. It's not metal, but it will stand the test of time. Although any lens can be damaged if dropped, the lens will withstand some bumps and bruises without sacrificing performance. It is solidly built. The lens does not extend, rotate, or protrude when focusing. Moreover, both front and rear elements are static so no sucking in nasty dust.

IQ. Image quality is untainted. However, the f/1.4G produces noticeably warmer colors. I suggest always adjusting your WB correctly/manually. If you shoot RAW, there are no worries in this dept. I do adjust my WB in order to get the image temp just the way I like it and as much in camera as possible.

Cons

IQ. Although the bokeh is very good, it could be smoother when stopped down, but I am picking nits. This comes down to the 7 rounded aperture blades this lens has as opposed to the 9 on "pro" lenses. I use this lens for portraits. 97% of my shots are at f/1.8 so this really doesn't bother me.

Build. The lens isn't built like it f/1.4G older sibling so it does require extra care. Again, it can be considered nitpicking because I don't think anyone would intentionally damage their lens.

CA. Wide open, which is where I live, combined with a high contrast setting, calls up some serious chromatic aberrations. In full daylight, I usually use a Circular Polarizer which helps A LOT, you can use an ND filter if you prefer, but beware. Truth be told, the f/1.4G doesn't do much better controlling CA either.

Focus. This is regarding manual focus as I am trying to be as objective as possible. The throw is short and simply not made as a good manual focusing solution.

This is an amazing lens and well worth the price tag. IMO, if you shoot wide open all the time, or the majority there of, the f/1.4G is just not worth its cost. For its price tag, this lens is leaps above it. Why have f/1.4 if you have to stop down to f/1.8 to get a sharp image. Most images with the f/1.4 are almost always shot at f/1.8 or smaller. This lens takes the cake but you do need and/or want f/1.4, the Sigma is a better bet. However, this lens WILL give you pro quality images for any pro gig.

WOW!

Comments about Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 85mm f/1.8G Lens:

I wish it were possible to give more than 5 stars because this lens is a 10. I bought this because of all the rave reviews. Pro shooters already know about this lens For the non Pro's It certainly exceeded my expectations. I already own the 35mm and 50mm 1.8 and those are great lenses. This 85 mm 1.8 blows them away. Sharper and faster focusing than either of the other two. Also the bokeh is incredible. I bought it for portraits and indoor sports as a less expensive alternative to the 70-200 2.8. I shoot a lot of hockey and very rarely need reach out to 200. I have been using the nifty fifty and getting great shots in the rink. So I wanted this for a little more reach. As for portraits the 50 was good but isn't always as flattering to the subject as I want. I think 85mm on a crop sensor is a better focal length. This lens arrived the day before my sons prom. I literally took it out of the box on prom night and attached it to my D7100. Set it on appeture priority at 2.8 and started shooting. I am not a proffesional by any means but the results were so stunning I have been asked by everyone I shot pre prom to take their senior portraits. The images were tack sharp and bokeh incredible. This is definately a must have lens. Nikon makes great glass and this is one of their best. Certainly a great value for the money. I expect this will be on my D7100 most of the time now. As for B&H they never disappoint. Free Expediated shipping put it on my door step in 2 days. Prices are always great and I rest easy knowing if I have any questions they are there and I have called in the past with questions.

Comments about Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 85mm f/1.8G Lens:

Add this to the chorus of 5 star ratings. I bought this to go along with it's cousin, the 50mm 1.8 which is itself a fantastic lens. Like the 50, this lens is tack sharp, light and can auto focus as fast as you can frame the shot. To test it I used it to shoot my wire hair terrier as he fetched a ball. He's very fast and I was shooting in afternoon shadows on AF-C at 2.8. I believe I was at ISO 600 or 800. Anyway, "most" of the shots came out razor sharp when viewed on the rear LCD of my D750. His wiry hair, sharpness of the eyes were really other-worldly. The shots that didn't turn out so good was a function of the auto focus mode I was using at the time on the Nikon - not the lens' fault. In short, I can't image that the 1.4 version of this lens can take a better picture and it's nearly 3 X the price. I suppose someone here will debunk that statement with amazing shot from that lens but for me, for my studio work, it's a great lens.

Comments about Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 85mm f/1.8G Lens:

This is by far one of the best lens I have in my bag when it comes to portrait. Very sharp and consistent throughout.
Only drawback is chromatic aberration; when shooting under harsh light conditions you can easily notice it. Otherwise its a great lens.

Great secret weapon for basketball

Comments about Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 85mm f/1.8G Lens:

While this is a great portrait lens, this lens really shines as a faster alternative for basketball.  High schools gyms aren't the most well lit venues out there, and opening this lens up to 2.2 (as apposed to my 2.8 zoom) gives me 2/3 of stop faster shutter speed, and tack sharp images!  My favorite of the Nikon 1.8 primes, and definitely worth every penny.

Comments about Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 85mm f/1.8G Lens:

The lens is tack sharp wide open. It focuses fast on my D750, contrary to many of the reviews that claimed otherwise. Focus is fast even in low light. Many complained about the plastic build but I'd rather plastic to the extra weight that comes with metal. I use it mainly for portraits and it gets the eyes in sharp focus every time.. I love it and recommend it to anyone considering it.

I recently received this lens and took it out the next day for a beach engagement photo shoot. I used it on my D7100. It allowed me to stay a little further back and let the couple act more natural with each other. The pictures came out great. I can't wait to use this one again!

Comments about Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 85mm f/1.8G Lens:

This lens stuns in every way, from focus speed to wonderful balance on my Nikon D750,to second to none color rendition and amazing sharpness. The resolving power is actually among the class leading in the industry. If you really can deal with a little less shallow depth of field in this lens compared to its 1.4 sibling then by all means buy this and save torns of money.
I have 24-70 2.8,50mm 1.8 and 1.4,105mm VR macro but among them all my go to is the 85,it really has a subtle way to outshine others.
