Over the years I've used two camera systems - high end DSLR and top notch lenses as well as other mid-range systems - primarily better quality 'point and shoots'. I am an admitted Fuji-fan, having many of their digital cameras over the years (and hanging on to them). I became quite interested in the X-System when it first came out, and decided to buy the X-E1 with the 18-55 'kit' lens. I was certainly impressed - not only with the camera, but with the quality of the lens - to the point where I decided to sell off some of my DSLR gear. I also purchased the 55-200 lens which is also top-notch. After some research, I decided to buy a prime - either the 14mm or the 35/1.4 With all the excellent reviews and feedback I knew I couldn't go wrong with either, so I decided on the 35/1.4. Many times I like to shoot in low-light as well as controlling the DOF on portrait shots. Given the crop factor on the APS-C sensor, this is pretty much a 'normal' viewing lens. This is the best non-full frame lens I've ever owned and certainly challenges the bokeh of many of the DSLR lenses costing at least twice as much. The build quality is excellent, and I am very happy with this purchase. I am a non-professional, but like having the best quality equipment that I can afford. This lens satisfies that requirement.

I traded my Canon 6D and great quality glass in for a X-E2 with three Fuji lenses, the 14mm, 35mm and the 55-200. I did this because I picked up an x100s and loved it. The 6D with my Sigma 35mm 1.4mm lens was a pixel peepers dream. Tack sharp, great color and contrast rendering, absolute magic came out of that combo. And while the x100s was technically inferior in almost every way, and lacking quite a bit of the magic pop factor, after walking around for two weeks and tacking tons of side by side comparisons, something dawned on me. The 6D was much better with low light, the Sigma much sharper wide open and stopped down, but at the end of the day, when I went to make 13x19" prints with my Pixma Pro-100 printer, nobody could tell the different between which camera was which. Right then I decided that while the Canon 6D is a technically superior camera, it wasn't worth the weight, bulk, expense, conspicuousness, etc.

Now my transition to the full on, full time Fuji setup has been a bit of a mixed bag. My images are generally speaking, not making me happy quite the same way they used to with the Canon. The good images are a little less good, and they seem a little less consistent to come by. I find the gear incredibly fun to use, way more so than the Canon, and I do feel like I'm getting more and more used to it and steadily getting more keeper quality images.

I initially HATED this lens. I almost sent it back and traded it in for the Zeiss 32mm. If I hadn't of had a bunch of unexpected expenses all pop up at once I probably would have. Compared to the Sigma 35mm 1.4 this lens is soft wide open, lacks character, renders color somewhat poorly and has blah contrast and micro contrast. It is way too soft and close focusing distances. It really doesn't suit how I want to shoot at all. I generally like the 35mm focal length more than 50 (what this is about equivelent to). When I shoot this focal length I want subject isolation, lots of out of focus elements, close focusing to highlight a feature or two and add to the bokeh. This lens is not good at this. If I want more things in focus and/or more environment, I'm going to go with the x100s and the 35mm equivelent focal length every time. BUT, I needed a fast lens, and everyone else on the planet seems to love this lens to I decided to keep it and see if over time I couldn't figure out what all the fuss was about.

Over the weekend I shot a live concert, and I started to get it. Obviously the aperture was a big bonus in a poorly lit space, but it actually performed better than expected. Then just yesterday I snapped a quick pic of a friend at his new apartment, and to my surprise, tack sharp, with good subject isolation (albeit at f1.8 and not wide open). I hate buying fast lenses and then not be able to use them effectively wide open, it defeats the purpose to me. So far this seems to do much better at 1.8 than 1.4. I still need a few more months to hopefully figure this lens out and make a final determination. But after a month or so, it is by far my least favorite of the bunch. The few shots I got with this lens this past weekend though, give me hope that the first month has been user error. Time will tell

It's a nice day to day lens to have. It's fairly light and compact and the 1.4 is sensual

Comments about Fujifilm 35mm f/1.4 XF R Lens:

This lens goes perfectly with my fujifilm xt2. It's sharp, but also small in size. The only down side I have is the noise it makes during focusing--something that might attract attention on the street despite the size of it being small.

Good but not currently great

Comments about Fujifilm 35mm f/1.4 XF R Lens:

This lens is pretty good, but not quite 5 stars. I was surprised to see that it doesn't internally focus, and that the moving part of the lens barrel isn't concealed by the lens hood (which attaches to the end of the lens and moves with the barrel). This looks and feels less professional.

Focus speed is definitely slower than other Fuji lenses, but the image quality is fantastic. The aperture ring is a little less firm than I'd like, its easy to bump the ring and all of a sudden be shooting 2/3 of a stop in either direction.

BE CAREFUL with that metal lens hood. Fujifilm currently doesn't sell it separately from the lens, so if you mess it up, you can't buy a replacement from Fujifilm. I really hope they package and sell it separately in the future (as they currently do with the 16mm metal hood).

Overall you're getting good build quality, slow focus and great image quality.

Anything but "Normal"!

Comments about Fujifilm 35mm f/1.4 XF R Lens:

I used to own a Canon 50mm 1.4. I found it boring. As I am transitioning over to more studio work I needed a wider focal length for portraits than the 56mm. I had heard about the "magic" inside this lens. This lens is anything but boring in comparison to the Canon field of view. It is sharp and has character. At f2 with a head and shoulder portrait, the falloff is gorgeous from the eyes to the ear. I'm in love with this "normal" beauty!

nice optical quality - fairly slow AF motor and a noisy

By John

Comments about Fujifilm 35mm f/1.4 XF R Lens:

Optically very nice - but like so many Fuji lenses - the focus speed is slow - and it is a bit noisy - yes there is the 35mm F2.0 - but of course not the same -
Why cannot Fuji produce a new version of the 35mm F1.4 with a faster AF motor and quieter ??

but for stills - it is manageable - end results are nice image wise -

Panasonic makes the 42.5 F1.2 - with IS - and is quiet and motor faster - and yes with Image Stabilization - awesome
No Fuji body has IBIS and will not according to Fuji - so IS in lenses is a must - Yes even primes

you will not be disappointed with optical quality - but do not expect to use it for sports or fast moving objects - and even with the XT2 :)

Lightweight Sharp Little Lens !

Comments about Fujifilm 35mm f/1.4 XF R Lens:

It's F1.2 - what else can I say !!! It's my street lens from dawn till late in the evening. Just love this lens. I'm currently using this lens on a Fujifilm X-T10. This lens paired with the Fujifilm X-T10 is fabulous. I had considered buying a Ricoh for street photography but this X-T10 gives me interchangeable lens capability. The combination is really lightweight, fast, sharp and discreet. This lens is a keeper ! When I only want to carry ONE LENS this is the one I put on the camera.

I have had the X-e2 for over two years and have been using the 18-55 kit lens. It was and is a good lens...made me sell all my Canon DSLR gear just based on the IQ and the lightweight factor, but this lens...for me changed my whole way of thinking in the Art. It stays on my x-e2 95% of the time

Expected a lot but

By bnedumudi

Comments about Fujifilm 35mm f/1.4 XF R Lens:

The lens doesnt create dramatic improved images as many other reviewers suggested. it provide some decent photos. but focusing is a concern. In the night , if it is dark and camera is kept on the lens continues to hunt the focus with you touching the shutter button. If it is left like that, it would drain the battery and also would damage AF systems soon.

Comments about Fujifilm 35mm f/1.4 XF R Lens:

I have been shooting this lens for about 10 months. This is my most used portrait lens, gets more use (for me) than the 56, 90 and 16-55 combined. Sometimes I'll shoot an entire session with just this lens.

This is the first lens into my bag for paying gigs.

my mini Noct

Comments about Fujifilm 35mm f/1.4 XF R Lens:

bought this lens and the 35/2 WR

while the WR lens was smaller, quieter
it was ,in my mind, boring

the 35/1.4 has more character
maybe because it isn't perfect, I don't know

I liken it to my old Nikon Noct, which everyone loved to knock
"not critically sharp", vignettes, not so smooth OOF etc...

but it, like this lens just has that look that I love
really special for BW, IMO

Good, with faults.

By Jeffsper

Comments about Fujifilm 35mm f/1.4 XF R Lens:

This lens is everything I expected. It takes beautiful photos with great bokeh. But it is noisy and slow to focus in low light, as stated in every review I've read. It was a bit of learning curve coming from the kit lens....but I am loving it more and more every time I shoot. I don't care about weather resistance. The noise that comes from it doesn't bother me too much. The biggest criticism is the slow focus. I use manual focus a lot...so I thought this point wouldn't matter to me... But turns out it does. That being said, it is a great lens and I think it is a keeper. It hasn't come off my camera since I got it.

Beautiful Photographs in Hands of a Beginner

By Luke Life

Comments about Fujifilm 35mm f/1.4 XF R Lens:

Less than 2 weeks out of the box this Fujifilm X-T10, coupled with the Fujifilm 35mm f/1.4 XF R lens, has produced beautiful photographs in the hands of our 11 year old son. We bought it for our family specifically because he had became interested in photography and wanted something more than the camera on his iPhone 5s. A professional photographer friend had recommended the X-T10 body with the 35mm f/1.4 XF R lens and advised we buy them from B & H in particular. We simply followed his advice and so far, we couldn't be happier.
