This has become my most used lens. Great for portraits, great for landscaping, even took it to the zoo and shot some fantastic photos. Crops at 100 percent look great with this lens. This lens is about as heavy as the 24-105 but much sharper. Outstanding in low light and razor sharp. The great thing about this lens, when traveling my backpack weighs a lot less. The only down side to this lens is the price. Price along will keep it out of reach of many folks. Don't forget, a great camera like the Canon 5D Mark III, requires good glass if you want your photographs to stand apart from the average photo. If you want to take snapshots, use your phone. If you want to take outstanding photographs that will be praised, save your money and get this lens.

I am a wedding photographer and pre-ordered this lens with a specific need; I wanted a wide lens that had the equivalent quality and sharpness that my 70-200 IS II produces. After months of staring at the amazing MTF charts & waiting for the lens to be available, I was under the impression that this lens was the "messiah" & that IF it produced images equally as breathtaking as my 70-200 IS II, then it would be worth every penny. (You'll have to pardon my fixation with the Canon 70-200 2.8 IS II; it is the best lens I have ever owned. If I was able to shoot an entire wedding with it, I WOULD. If you don't own it, I highly recommend purchasing one.) So far I've shot 2 weddings with the 24-70 II & have come to the conclusion that it is a GREAT lens. Great- NOT spectacular. It has fast & accurate focus, bokeh is beautiful, it feels well made & heavy, but it did not give me the "quality" that I was personally looking for. There is nothing wrong with this lens. The only negative things I could say about it is 1) the lack of protection from the redesigned hood and 2) price. At the full, introductory price, I see no reason to rush and buy one. If you can wait, THEN WAIT. If you have a perfectly working 24-70 mark 1, THEN WAIT. For the money, I had high expectations. Again, this lens is great, but was not impressive enough for me to keep (based on picture quality vs price). I previously owned the original 24-70, and do not notice a vast difference between them. My needs may be very different than yours; that's why I tried to describe mine specifically. I plan to return the 24-70 II and replace it with the Canon 24mm 1.4 II. I recently had the opportunity to shoot a wedding with the 24mm 1.4 & was very impressed with it; but I already had the 24-70 II on pre-order. I plan to "possibly" purchase the 24-70 II in 1-2 years, when the price equates the quality it produces.

Sharp, sharp, sharp!

Comments about Canon EF 24-70mm f/2.8L II USM Lens:

I have been toying with the idea of upgrading my walk-around lens (currently a Canon 24-105mm f/4 IS) with something faster. But I questioned whether the 24-70 price would be worth the difference in speed given the lack of IS. So, based on very strong recommendations from friends who own the 24-70 and who do similar styles of photography as I, I decided to give it a try..

I'm very impressed with the optics - very sharp (most of the images I got don't require extra sharpening) - and the bokeh is awesome. Rack it out to 70mm and open it up to f/2.8. Just amazing!

I was on the fence about keeping it - again the price is hard for me to justify - but have decided to hang on to it. I still have my 24-105mm and will likely keep that as well - at least until I get a better grip on how slow I can go with the shutter without obvious shake.

The only reason I don't give it a 5 star rating is the lack of IS. Seems for the price of this lens, IS should be included. Tamron's 24-70 has VC and is several hundred dollars cheaper. I tried a friend's Tamron and it just didn't feel right to me.

If you've got the dough, buy the Canon.

Comments about Canon EF 24-70mm f/2.8L II USM Lens:

I use this lens for half the wedding every weekend. It's sharp as a tac and the colors that come out of camera are perfect (even shooting RAW). I wished it had image stabilization for the dark receptions where we have to use slow shutter speeds and low apertures, but it still works great. I think it was worth spending the extra money, but that may be because I notice all the little details that most people tend to overlook.

Comments about Canon EF 24-70mm f/2.8L II USM Lens:

I have never experienced a lens so crystal sharp through all focal lengths like the EF 24-70mm f/2.8L II USM Lens. It's so undeniably superior to so many other luxury lenses on the market, both Canon and Nikkor. This will be a favorite for many years to come.

Comments about Canon EF 24-70mm f/2.8L II USM Lens:

I use this lens as a walk-around travel lens. I debated buying the Canon EF 24-105mm F4 for this purpose but I wanted the sharpness and quality I'm accustomed to with my Canon EF 70-200mm F2.8L IS ii. Although the the lens is heavy, I'll take quality over that. I love the lock switch to prevent the lens from creeping out while walking around.

The 24-70L II lens really is a pleasure

By Chicago Canon

from Chicago, IL

Comments about Canon EF 24-70mm f/2.8L II USM Lens:

After 797 reviews, I wonder what I might add that provides that 'critical' piece of review feedback the reader will need to influence their decision. I spent a few minutes just earlier reading reviews to get a sense of what has been said before. First, B&H showed again why they're the best. I ordered the lens and accessories on a Tuesday and had everything on Thursday with no charge for shipping. I don't know if this was a promotion or always. It certainly helped me in Aug 2016.

The 24-70L II lens really is a pleasure to use. I knew the filter size was 82mm so this wasn't a shock. I knew the sticker price too, no shock there.

I've rented this lens in the past. I had been determined to keep my much older 28-70 f/2.8L. But, the rich colors being produced by Canon's newer L lenses are starting to show the older lens to be lacking in 1 on 1 comparisons. The differences are subtle and probably something I could address in processing, but I decided it's time to move up. The older lens had also started to develop a bit of a creep. The lock on the new model doesn't stop creep. It stops the lenses from flopping open when carried which I see as a cause of creep in lenses without a lock.

The 24-70 already has me rethinking my primes where there's overlap. Not seriously rethinking ... but the idea did get in my mind. It's that kind of lens.

Comments about Canon EF 24-70mm f/2.8L II USM Lens:

This lens is truly impressive. It's extremely easy to use, even for a intermediate photographer. The quality is so clear and crisp while also offering a great background blur when needed. We have been using it for filming video and found it to be a major upgrade from our standard Canon lens.

I haven't noticed any issues w/ not having the IS, that was my biggest worry and all is well!

Not what I thought

By Upnorth Hiker

Comments about Canon EF 24-70mm f/2.8L II USM Lens:

I was very excited to get this lens, I have had it on my list for awhile. After reading other reviews I thought sure that it would be an upgrade from my 24-105. Not the case, after a few shots side by side with my 24-105 in most cases it was not as sharp. Very disappointed and the lens has been returned, maybe I got a bad lens but for that much money there should not be a bad one.

EF 24-70mm f/2.8L II USM Lens

By stuscale

Comments about Canon EF 24-70mm f/2.8L II USM Lens:

My first L lens was the original 24-70. My go to lens. My favorite lens. Always there and always sharp. I had that lens for many years until a recent photo trip. An unfortunate accident meant my most used lens went crashing to the ground and broke into pieces. Fortunately, my insurance covered the lens replacement and the EF 24-70mm f/2.8L II USM Lens arrived. It seems a bit lighter, has a barrel lock to keep the lens from extending during transport and the zoom has the lens barrel out for zoom and in for wide angle. Different from the original. Otherwise, an improved version of one of Canons best, clearest and most versatile lenses made. Still my go to lens and will always be packed and used. A lens that will always deliver clear, sharp images. Great for portraits, landscapes, panos, and also great for lightning when using The Lightning Trigger.

Great lens. Much better than its predecessor

By RobertM

Comments about Canon EF 24-70mm f/2.8L II USM Lens:

Great lens that's vastly superior in just about every way to the Mark I version, which I owned for many years. I'm tempted to rate it 4 stars due the lack of image stabilization, but I can't because the image is still better than the competition. I wish they'd make a version with IS and also a version where the barrel doesn't telescope when you zoom, much like the 70-200mm f.2.8 Mark II.
