This has become my most used lens. Great for portraits, great for landscaping, even took it to the zoo and shot some fantastic photos. Crops at 100 percent look great with this lens. This lens is about as heavy as the 24-105 but much sharper. Outstanding in low light and razor sharp. The great thing about this lens, when traveling my backpack weighs a lot less. The only down side to this lens is the price. Price along will keep it out of reach of many folks. Don't forget, a great camera like the Canon 5D Mark III, requires good glass if you want your photographs to stand apart from the average photo. If you want to take snapshots, use your phone. If you want to take outstanding photographs that will be praised, save your money and get this lens.

I am a wedding photographer and pre-ordered this lens with a specific need; I wanted a wide lens that had the equivalent quality and sharpness that my 70-200 IS II produces. After months of staring at the amazing MTF charts & waiting for the lens to be available, I was under the impression that this lens was the "messiah" & that IF it produced images equally as breathtaking as my 70-200 IS II, then it would be worth every penny. (You'll have to pardon my fixation with the Canon 70-200 2.8 IS II; it is the best lens I have ever owned. If I was able to shoot an entire wedding with it, I WOULD. If you don't own it, I highly recommend purchasing one.) So far I've shot 2 weddings with the 24-70 II & have come to the conclusion that it is a GREAT lens. Great- NOT spectacular. It has fast & accurate focus, bokeh is beautiful, it feels well made & heavy, but it did not give me the "quality" that I was personally looking for. There is nothing wrong with this lens. The only negative things I could say about it is 1) the lack of protection from the redesigned hood and 2) price. At the full, introductory price, I see no reason to rush and buy one. If you can wait, THEN WAIT. If you have a perfectly working 24-70 mark 1, THEN WAIT. For the money, I had high expectations. Again, this lens is great, but was not impressive enough for me to keep (based on picture quality vs price). I previously owned the original 24-70, and do not notice a vast difference between them. My needs may be very different than yours; that's why I tried to describe mine specifically. I plan to return the 24-70 II and replace it with the Canon 24mm 1.4 II. I recently had the opportunity to shoot a wedding with the 24mm 1.4 & was very impressed with it; but I already had the 24-70 II on pre-order. I plan to "possibly" purchase the 24-70 II in 1-2 years, when the price equates the quality it produces.

I received my lens and used it the next day. It was just what I had hoped for. I needed a lens for toddler portraits. Toddlers are on the move, so this lens helped me keep up. The photos are just what I hoped for. My subject was clear and the background had a nice bokeh. My friend was pleased with the results too. I can tell this lens will be on my camera a lot!

Purchased this lens as a gift for my spouse who shoots with a Canon 5D Mark IV (I'm a Nikon D5 shooter). This is her new favorite lens for portrait work after her Canon 70-200mm f/2.8. Excellent focus right out of the box!

Great Lens!

By Kaylee

The quality of this lens is excellent! I'm not a beginner and I'm not a professional photographer so this was a big jump for me lens purchase wise. I was looking for a lens I could keep on my camera during a vacation and still get decent landscape shots along with portraits without having to switch between my 50mm and 24mm. I'm looking forward to trying it out in Alaska in a couple of weeks!

Exactly what I expect from a Canon "L" series lens

By eRegal Studio

I added this lens to my equipment list to fill the gap between my 14mm and my 70-200mm to accompany me on an upcoming photographic assignment in France. I had originally planned on taking my 50mm 1.2 prime along as well, but after working with this lens, I've decided I don't need to take the 50mm. The lens is razor sharp and produces the creamy smooth bokeh that I've come to expect from Canon lenses. I can see that this is going to be a real workhorse for me and will save me from carrying one extra lens when traveling.

This is a superb lens. Very sharp and is recommended for the Canon 5DS-R. Process the raw images in DxO Optics Pro and achieve even better results from the lens.

Images look as though taken with prime

By Carlos

Verified Buyer

I hadn't thought of purchasing this lens because primes have always seemed to have an edge over zooms and this earlier model seemed to be a boring lens but, this lens now stays mounted to my 5d iv, the 5dsr has a 70-200mm f/2.8L ii. Outstanding I Q with Canon system and durability as always.

I am loving this lens! I have a 50mm lens now and I wanted to be able to take photos at different distances. This lens makes it very possible! Also I live in AZ so I must be able to take inside photos so the f/2.8 makes it very possible!

I am loving this lens! I have a 50mm lens now and was not liking being stuck at 50mm... Now I can take more photos of my children at the distance I want! I live in AZ so with this lens it is easy to take inside photos with good lighting using f/2.8. I am very happy with this lens!
