A very light, moderately wide, very sharp lens with fast autofocus. I got a little spoiled with L lenses, but there are times when something smaller and lighter is preferable (pointing an L lens at someone can be sort of like pointing a bazooka at them, especially the F/2.8 zooms - not for the faint of heart), and that is where the new 28mm IS lens fits in. It may not be as sturdy as the 35mm L, but it focuses just as fast, and has IS to compensate for 1/4 as much light it lets in at the widest aperture.

I first tried to go light with the 40mm pancake, but the AF on that lens was way too slow.

IS on the 28mm helps a lot in low light, while keeping reasonable depth of field (the L lens often has to be stopped down to make sure more of the subject is in focus, negating its bright aperture advantage).

Downsides: vignette seems to be quite heavy wide open; or at least peripheral illumination correction makes images A LOT brighter. Distortion is pretty minimal, so vignetting is the only significant downside of the Canon 28mm IS F/2.8 lens.

I shoot mostly video on a 5d mark iii and 60d. This lens worked out great. Because it's so light and it has the image stabilizer I was able to do some great hand held work. (With the help of a monopod) Would be great if it was a little faster but 2.8 is still pretty good. Nice Bokeh. Also the lens seemed very sharp so it was easy to catch focus on the fly. I noticed some bedning or distortion on the edges but i was able to live with it. Also it's not the best build but I guess it's a trade off for the lightweirght. This was my best over the holidays purchase from b&h for sure.

Great lens for the money.

Comments about Canon EF 28mm f/2.8 IS USM Lens:

I'm very pleasantly surprised with this lens. Produces beautiful colors, crisp images and a shallow DOF I would expect from a faster lens. I wanted this lens for street shooting and I'm very happy I went with this one. I'm using this on my 5D Mk2 and so far am very happy with it. My favorite lens had been my 50mm f/1.4 L prime but I think I'm beginning to favor this one.

Comments about Canon EF 28mm f/2.8 IS USM Lens:

I bought this lens to use with a Sony a7R II and a Canon 5D Mark III. It works great for both cameras! It's especially nice to use with the Sony mirrorless on a gimbal.

My favorite travel lens

By James King

from Willits CA

Comments about Canon EF 28mm f/2.8 IS USM Lens:

I have had this lens about a year. It is very light, yet produces clear, crisp images. I use on both my 5D III and on 7D II where it functions as a normal lens. The f/2.8 + IS makes it great for low light situations. It's great for street photography, also for landscapes. I use it more than my L lenses.

Sharp and fast

By EJ

from Seattle

Comments about Canon EF 28mm f/2.8 IS USM Lens:

This is the sharpest lens I have ever owned, not just from Canon but also compared to other prime lenses from Pentax, Nikon, and Fuji. It focuses fast too but that's expected of a wide angle lens. It fits perfectly when you cradle the camera in your left hand unlike many flimsy zoom lenses that feel like there are a million small plastic parts about to break at any moment. The image stabilization works well, keeps you out of trouble down to about 1/8 second, very handy for indoor shots or after sunset shots.

May Be The Best Lens I Have

Comments about Canon EF 28mm f/2.8 IS USM Lens:

I was a little concerned about the lens being "only" f2.8, but this lens is nothing short of fabulous. Beautiful color, sharp as a scalpel, IS, and able to capture it all indoors, as well as out. This is the prime I've been looking for, and has taken first place in my kit from my 35mm f2.0.

I love this lens, especially for the money. I'm an intermediate level, and now have several L lenses in my pack. Don't be deterred this is not an L series. It's a steal piece of glass at this price point. It's quiet, IS is very effective, AF fairly quick. There is good reason this lens has a constant 5 star rating. You will be very happy with the performance of this lens, guaranteed. I love it.

    High quality, compact lens

    By James King

    from Willits CA

Comments about Canon EF 28mm f/2.8 IS USM Lens:

I have had this lens about a year. It has not received the recognition it deserves. It is sharp and has IS. I use on both a full frame (5d III) and on crop body (7d II and SL1). On a SL 1 it's about as minimalist as you can get. A truly great street lens which produces high quality images. I take the SL1 / 28 mm combo hiking and have produced some of my favorite images. A good travel lens. Always in my bag.

Great travel lens on crop body

    By James King

    from Willits CA

Comments about Canon EF 28mm f/2.8 IS USM Lens:

I bought this lens about a year ago. I mainly use it on my SL1, which is perfect for travel. The 28 mm f/2.8 IS ends up being a normal lens on a crop body. Excellent image quality, light weight, inconspicuous.

I use this lens most of the time on my Canon 7D Mark II (before that on my 7D) and I love it for its size. It is the perfect walk around lens. The lens is sharp, even wide open and therefore its fast enough in low light conditions.

Realizing that most DSLR are big and heavy, I decided not to upgrade, but put together a small, light and fun camera. The end results was a Canon SL1, EF 28mm F2.8 IS lens and 270 Flash. Great pictures and video, and fun to use and carry around.

Comments about Canon EF 28mm f/2.8 IS USM Lens:

I am using this on my Rebel 650. It's a great combo for having a nice lightweight camera lens combo to pack along easily. I am very pleased with the quality of the images. In general, I have a lot more keepers that have the clarity that i just don't seem to get with my zooms ( 24-105 and 16-35). I took a long time for me to decide between the 24, 28 and 35 and I'm very happy with this on a crop sensor. I might consider the 35 2.0 next for either my Rebel or full frame Canon. My wife, who loves to use this camera and lens, took this with her for her work to do some photography for a VIP visit and I was very impressed that she got so many wonderful photos without that much experience as a photographer. That, in itself, is a great testament to the value of this lens. Bought the Vello lens hood and it's also excellent.

I bought this primarily for taking photos of my now one year old son. It delivers well in low light.

I am currently living in SE Asia and kudos to B and H for getting this lens to my 'courier' so quickly before her departure from the USA. Impossible to find this lens here as it is not that popular.

Comments about Canon EF 28mm f/2.8 IS USM Lens:

Beautiful image, the stabilization in a prime lens is extremely helpful, useful, and works perfectly. The only major downside is that because it's only f/2.8 (compared to most prime lenses, that are f/1.8 or lower), it doesn't have the best low light performance, but it's certainly not terrible, and much better than most zoom lenses.

Overall, for the price, it's an incredibly buy, and especially with the OIS.

Also, it's very well made and feels high quality.
