FPS
This unit doesn't provide a great increase in frames per second - from 4 fps to 6 fps in DX mode, in FX mode the rate remains at 4 fps (for D800). This apparently is due to data transfer speeds rather than an inherent deficiency in the MB-D12.

AVAILABLE POWER
However, the gain in power endurance is highly valuable. Applications such as long shoots with high numbers of images, high AF and VR use, long exposures and overnight use of sensor triggers need a large bank of stored power and the MB-D12 provides this.

MAXIMISING POWER
The cost to maximise the usefulness of this unit, ie a couple of EN-EL18 batteries ($320 - outrageous), an MH-26 Dual Battery Charger ($320 - outrageous) and a BL-5 battery cover ($30)totals $670. This is quite ridiculous unless you also own a D4 and already have the MH-26 charger.

AA CELL ALTERNATIVE
The choice of AA batteries provides a cheaper (but less convenient) alternative. High output batteries such as the 2700 MAh PowerEx AA NiMH rechargeables perform extremely well in the MB-D12 (in terms of both available power and loss of charge when not in use). A friend gave me his MS-D12 AA Battery Holder. I keep this loaded with a second set of 8 charged PowerEx AAs. This allows a speedy change of batteries that is quicker than changing an EN-EL18 battery. Combined with an 8 cell charger, this system works extremely well. Total cost for 16 AA cells and charger was $AU 160.

HANDLING
The MB-D12 puts more camera in your hand. For me, this makes carrying and using the D800 easier. The increased weight provides more inertial mass and therefore, steadier hand held shots. The benefits of camera control placement for vertical shots are obvious in that you don't have to hold your arm high and wrap your hand over the body to reach the shutter button or aperture and shutter speed dials.

BUILD QUALITY
Excellent as you would expect from Nikon. (Considering the purchase price, you would also demand this.)

OVERALL
Expensive, but the benefits are significant for the the kinds of shooting I do. I wouldn't be without one.

Ridiculously expensive if you opt for the full EN-EL18 battery setup without the benefit of already having an MH-26 charger.

The design of this grip has one major downfall - you need to remove the grip entirely to replace the battery in the camera.

So if you were thinking of using the grip to give you longer use with two batteries - well, it does that, but you need to remove the grip every time you need to recharge the battery in the camera. In other words, the grip can't be used as a permanent attachment with the camera.

Great Back Up!

Comments about Nikon MB-D12 Multi Power Battery Pack:

I read the reviews about this battery pack and it seems that others are concerned with the rattle, but it is simply the screw that attaches to the camera and I don't have a problem with it once the pack is attached. This is my first Multi Power Pack and I am excited to use it with my new D810!

Surprisingly Useful

Comments about Nikon MB-D12 Multi Power Battery Pack:

This item was part of a package from B&H. I find it very helpful, especially when shooting people with a lot of vertical frames. Being able to hold the camera vertically in a secure way, with the addition of a shutter release designed exactly for that, is a boon, especially if you need the extra battery power for longer shoots or to improve the continuous shooting rate. Build solidly and attaches to my D810 very securely.

Faulty battery Pack for Nikon D810

By Ricardo

Comments about Nikon MB-D12 Multi Power Battery Pack:

Recently bought this battery pack for my Nikon D 810, I like the battery packs because they help me taking pictures in the portrait position, and it is easier to mount the camera on the tripod when in this position. However, after connecting the battery pack to my camera the wheels for menu and sub menu, and focus do not work at all in my D810. Too bad for a battery grip of this price.Since it is expensive, I considered first getting the cheaper version from Vello, but precisely went to the original Nikon in order to ensure I would not have issues at all. Now I have an expensive battery pack that does not work in my camera. Sending this to Nikon for repair.

Lousy Design

By Jmars

Comments about Nikon MB-D12 Multi Power Battery Pack:

A battery grip is a must for a full sized DSLR like the D810. It rounds out the feel, balances the camera and adds some convenient controls. This grip fails because the design is incredibly stupid.

You put one battery in the camera, screw on a grip and put 1 battery in the grip. Now when the battery dies in the camera you have to remove a grip, swap a battery, put a grip back on and set the clock.

This puts unnecessary wear on the camera body and connectors and is more work than it should be. previous generation grips allowed for 2 batteries in the grip and easy trap door access. The whole battery process took 20 seconds, this takes 3-4 minutes and you have to set the clock every time you swap the camera body battery which is super inconvenient when shooting in the field and easy enough to forget about if you are not used to it. I will be going aftermarket on this one and this is a fail for Nikon as far as I am concerned.

Comments about Nikon MB-D12 Multi Power Battery Pack:

I do not care about the extra battery capability as much as the convenience when shooting verticals, plus I like the feel and my l-plate fastens securely as well.

The other benefit is the ability to pick up and use AA batteries if I'm in a pinch somewhere.

Comments about Nikon MB-D12 Multi Power Battery Pack:

If you own a D810, Your body is not complete without the grip. I have 2 grips that I use on both 810's I own and the are almost attached continuously. The extra battery usage and couple extra FPS and ergonomic feel make this a must have for every 810 owner.
