FPS
This unit doesn't provide a great increase in frames per second - from 4 fps to 6 fps in DX mode, in FX mode the rate remains at 4 fps (for D800). This apparently is due to data transfer speeds rather than an inherent deficiency in the MB-D12.

AVAILABLE POWER
However, the gain in power endurance is highly valuable. Applications such as long shoots with high numbers of images, high AF and VR use, long exposures and overnight use of sensor triggers need a large bank of stored power and the MB-D12 provides this.

MAXIMISING POWER
The cost to maximise the usefulness of this unit, ie a couple of EN-EL18 batteries ($320 - outrageous), an MH-26 Dual Battery Charger ($320 - outrageous) and a BL-5 battery cover ($30)totals $670. This is quite ridiculous unless you also own a D4 and already have the MH-26 charger.

AA CELL ALTERNATIVE
The choice of AA batteries provides a cheaper (but less convenient) alternative. High output batteries such as the 2700 MAh PowerEx AA NiMH rechargeables perform extremely well in the MB-D12 (in terms of both available power and loss of charge when not in use). A friend gave me his MS-D12 AA Battery Holder. I keep this loaded with a second set of 8 charged PowerEx AAs. This allows a speedy change of batteries that is quicker than changing an EN-EL18 battery. Combined with an 8 cell charger, this system works extremely well. Total cost for 16 AA cells and charger was $AU 160.

HANDLING
The MB-D12 puts more camera in your hand. For me, this makes carrying and using the D800 easier. The increased weight provides more inertial mass and therefore, steadier hand held shots. The benefits of camera control placement for vertical shots are obvious in that you don't have to hold your arm high and wrap your hand over the body to reach the shutter button or aperture and shutter speed dials.

BUILD QUALITY
Excellent as you would expect from Nikon. (Considering the purchase price, you would also demand this.)

OVERALL
Expensive, but the benefits are significant for the the kinds of shooting I do. I wouldn't be without one.

Ridiculously expensive if you opt for the full EN-EL18 battery setup without the benefit of already having an MH-26 charger.

The design of this grip has one major downfall - you need to remove the grip entirely to replace the battery in the camera.

So if you were thinking of using the grip to give you longer use with two batteries - well, it does that, but you need to remove the grip every time you need to recharge the battery in the camera. In other words, the grip can't be used as a permanent attachment with the camera.

Don't go shooting without it !

Comments about Nikon MB-D12 Multi Power Battery Pack:

If you own a D810, Your body is not complete without the grip. I have 2 grips that I use on both 810's I own and the are almost attached continuously. The extra battery usage and couple extra FPS and ergonomic feel make this a must have for every 810 owner.

The MB-D12 is a perfect companion to my Nikon D810.
I now have all the camera controls for hortz. And vert. Shots along with additional power capacity.
Yes it's expensive but so is the camera and lenses.

Comments about Nikon MB-D12 Multi Power Battery Pack:

Easy to attach and worked perfectly from the start. Love it for vertical shots especially. Worked great on a tripod and helped with stabilizing for short, handheld video shots.

well-made - big help! - but a scare

By rstorrs1

Comments about Nikon MB-D12 Multi Power Battery Pack:

Having that extra shoot time without having to worry about swapping batteries is great. The hardware is made to high tolerances to fit on my D810 well. It does add weight when you are hiking up a mountain for that sunrise shot, but your biceps need the workout as much as your lungs and quads. The only flaw I have encountered so far is the battery tray. Without a jarring shock or misaligned loading, my camera went dead after shooting 300 images out in the woods. It turned out that the battery became dislodged within the battery tray, disconnecting the contacts. It was a simple fix, reseating the battery, but it was startling.

Worth every penny

Comments about Nikon MB-D12 Multi Power Battery Pack:

Need the grip for a wedding shoot for a friend of mine, shop around for third party and trying to see some cash.. Turns out Neewer md-D12 does the job however I can't afford the chance to having a renneconntion issue. So went with Nikon official grip, and it sure tell the difference! Not only it more reliable but also the grip/shutter button are comfortable to use! Thr battery boost sure is a plus!

Just a heads up, if wondering why fps doesn't go 7 with grip is because EN-EL18 or EN-EL18a is needed (or AA battery)

Overall, highly recommend for those need reliable and extra juice for a long photoshoot!

I probably would not have bought this grip. But it was included in a combo with the D800. Now I am glad I have it. Great to use when the camera is hand held.

Comments about Nikon MB-D12 Multi Power Battery Pack:

Added it to my D810. It works great. Added size helps me to grip the camera better. And I can go out for a full day without change the battery. I give 4 stars is because you need to remove the battery pack to replace the battery in the camera.

Comments about Nikon MB-D12 Multi Power Battery Pack:

Essential for the long outings where a second battery might be needed and regular flipping of the camera from horizontal to vertical is likely. Well made, secure screw attachment, fits my hand well.

Comments about Nikon MB-D12 Multi Power Battery Pack:

I really enjoy using my D810 with the battery pack attached. It is much easier to hold and use when turning the camera 90 degrees. Plus with the extra battery many more photos can be taken before changing batteries. The only bad point is the battery pack has to be removed to replace the battery in the camera. I wish Nikon made it like the MB-D200 for the D200 camera where both batteries are in the grip.

Solid and functional

Comments about Nikon MB-D12 Multi Power Battery Pack:

I use this when I either know that I will be shooting mainly portraits, or if I want extra battery life during the day. It pretty much doubles the d810 battery life. It fits on the camera body nice and snug, and feels good in your hand. Kind of pricey but worth the money if you know you will use it. Luckily mine was included free with the camera body purchase, so that's an even better bonus for me.
