Great Grid to Control the Light

By Shutter Avenue Photography

Comments about Westcott 40 Degree Fabric Grid for the 43" Apollo Orb:

I have used this grid modifier with the original octabank. I love I it can control the light for not spilling out and everywhere.
It did take some time to attach it the first time because it comes with velcro yet once you do this few times it's very easy to attach it.
The only thing why I could have give it a 4 starts but didn't is I wish it could come with a pouch that you can put it away when not using it.
Overall its a great modifier and I definatly recommend it for other.

Comments about Westcott 40 Degree Fabric Grid for the 43" Apollo Orb:

The only reason it doesn't get a five is that the construction is better than the umbrella Apollo Orb so it's a bit too heavy for the Orb I find. It's a beautiful piece though I don't think I'll use it that often.

Love this product and the light it produces. Works best with diffuser for bright soft light, and the sold separate honeycomb grid that focuses the light into a circular style pattern.

Comments about Westcott 40 Degree Fabric Grid for the 43" Apollo Orb:

The thing about grids is always their astonishing cost. This grid isn't too expensive for its size, or its nice level of focused control (40 degrees). Goodness knows, I have dropped much much more for my Profoto grids. But the way that Westcott achieves this "reasonable" price is by using a relatively heavy and inexpensive fabric.

You know those Re-use Re-cycle tote bags that get handed out at store openings, or you can buy in the checkout lane at your local grocer? That fabric, which is a kind of thin pressed spun-woven felt, is what's used to make this grid. It gets the job done, but compared to the lightweight fine silken ribbon of a high-end grid, it weighs a ton and allows a small amount of light to spill sideways. So that's the trade-off.

Also, there's only a small strip of velcro along the outer perimeter, which I think contributes to the lack of structure of the grid. I'm not too stoked about the sag this adds to my Apollo Orb, but other than that, the grid does exactly what it's supposed to do. And it works well. It's worth mentioning: the stitching on the Westcott product line continues to improve over time. Cheers!

          It's a Grid!

          By mushuhardy

          from Albany, NY

Comments about Westcott 40 Degree Fabric Grid for the 43" Apollo Orb:

The grid does what is designed to do...control the direction of light and control light spill. My only complaint is that it weighs down the top of the Apollo and makes it sag, which is probably more of an indictment of the Apollo than the grid.

Comments about Westcott 40 Degree Fabric Grid for the 43" Apollo Orb:

First I must say I have had a Wescott Apollo Orb for over a year now and love it so much I purchased a second and bought grids for both. With the grids on I use them for side lighting and because the Orbs are wide I use nylon fabric to cut the down to how much light I need. The grids are nicely made as all my Wescott products are.

They will add a little (not much) weight to your light stand so if you weren't using a sandbag (and you should always) you will now.

I have to say for side lighting these grids are so much more affordable than grids for strip boxes. With a little fabric to cut the light you can easily turn Orbs into 12x36 stip lights.

Comments about Westcott 40 Degree Fabric Grid for the 43" Apollo Orb:

This Grid accentuates the Orb's ability to control and diffuse light. After using the unit several times I find that the Grid seems to be of higher grade material than the Orb unit itself. I observed how the orb seemed to struggle under the weight of the grid.

while the orb's setup is super simple. its lightweight construction almost doesn't hold up the grid. I would say the grid is actually constructed better than the umbrella. came in a nice storage bag. although I can;t figure how to fold it back up to get in there again.

I like the dramatic affects I get when I manipulate the light around my subject and background, I am happy I purchased the Ord and the grid and also a beauty dish to top it all off. I use a PhotoFlex 650 Mono light along with a couple of Canon 580EXII speedlites, some Pocket Wizard III's firing from a Canon 5D Mk 3. Great buy!
