Comments about Gitzo Series 3 6X Systematic Carbon Fiber Tripod (Long):

This replaces my well used tripod that required bending down to compose images (never used the telescopic column). This tripod is lighter and taller which both help my back. This tripod is a bit longer when collapsed but has not hindered my process. I am using this for mostly landscape photography but it will work for other genres.

Comments about Gitzo Series 3 6X Systematic Carbon Fiber Tripod (Long):

Being an outdoor wildlife photographer it is important to have a lightweight but sturdy tripod. I am happy with this one! My only complaint is that for the money this cost I feel it should have come with a nice carry case instead of a cheep cloth pull tie bag. My only reason for the 4 star instead of 5 star.

Comments about Gitzo Series 3 6X Systematic Carbon Fiber Tripod (Long):

Gitzo tripods are a sure thing. The advantage of the Systematic system is that you can have more than one plate with a different head. In my case, I have one with a Wimberley WH 200 Gimbal head, and one with Novoflex Classic Ball 5 II and one with Arca-Swiss Monoball Z1 with a Wimberley quick release clamp, that I attach a Wimberley Sidekick. Should you need a column you can add one as well. This tripod is very rigid and can accommodate a 300mm without a problem and depending on your head you could go up to a 500mm. I own both the GT3542LS and the GT3542XLS. You only need the XLS if you have un-even terrain; it weights 6.8 LBS vs. the GT3542LS 4.3 LBS. After a hike it does make a difference. For me the Systematic is the way to go for added stability. Yes, they are worth every penny.

Comments about Gitzo Series 3 6X Systematic Carbon Fiber Tripod (Long):

After owning and using many tripods, I found this one to be the finest in every way! It is very sturdy, reasonably light to transport, well made and easy to set up. No more snaps and clips and struggle to engage. Just a quarter turn of the collar and down the extension comes. If you get good, you can turn all colors at once with hand and the legs fall to the ground. When my camera is mounted, the camera feels solid and easy to use for photograph. The tripod came recommended to me and I highly recommend it to others. Don't mess with the cheap brands. You will end up buying this one!

Comments about Gitzo Series 3 6X Systematic Carbon Fiber Tripod (Long):

I spent a year - yup, one year - wrestling the tripod purchase decision. I'd already picked up a highly one that I thought would do the job but, alas, the workmanship didn't see it through two years. So, not wanting to be a tripod collector, a year was spent researching, evaluating, and procrastinating. Frustration with the existing unstable tripod finally pushed me to make a decision which was the Gitzo. The only good thing about waiting so long was that a sale happened along. Yes, I saved some money but boy did I waste some valuable shooting time with old cruddy. The Gitzo is a dream combination of light and sturdy. I was pleasantly surprised at the ease with which the legs can be extended; normally, I'm a fan of the locking not twisting type. I needed a tripod that would be used outdoors in all kinds of weather as well as indoors. I also needed something that would give me the down low capability of the existing tripod. This baby fits the bill perfectly!

Comments about Gitzo Series 3 6X Systematic Carbon Fiber Tripod (Long):

I would recommend this tripod for landscapes/cityscapes/portraits. I found it rock solid even for heavy body/lens combinations. Setup is easy. It is light weight for the amount of rigidity it provides which makes carrying it in the field acceptable. Unfolded it reaches eye level for a 5' 11" individual however folded length is about 23 inches which enables you to carry it an a suitcase. It is expensive but this may be the last tripod you'll need.

Comments about Gitzo Series 3 6X Systematic Carbon Fiber Tripod (Long):

This is an upgrade from a manfrotto C190 - that was a fine beginner tripod (even a bit better than beginner), but the Gitzo feels so much more solid. I also got the wonderfully designed and small footprint arca-swiss monopod P0 (highly recommended), which pairs very well with the Gitzo. I got the 4 segment per leg version for ease of use when traveling, even though I was told to get the 3 segment. However, even raised fully, the 4 segment tripod is as solid as a rock. It's completely reliable for the landscape photography that I like to do.I compared this tripod with the Induro 313 and 314 - the Induros seemed very solid, but were slightly heavier, and not as sleek as the Gitzo. I also looked at a comparable Oben. Gitzo definitely took the lead. I might have looked at an RRS tripod, but couldn't find a way to bring the price down anywhere near what I ended up paying for the Gitzo. As well, the RRS tripods were backordered. While this is by no means a backpacking tripod, I wanted something that I wouldn't feel to badly about carrying around on day hikes. It's not bad at all for that purpose - and I can either carry it in my hand, or, with an additional carabiner, attach it to the back of my LowePro 450. It's a little too tall and substantial for that backpack, but it will work fine.Maintenance so far is very minimal - just extending the legs fully when I get home from a shoot to wipe them down with windex and a rag. I leave the pod extended for a day or two to dry out fully.I'm also following the recommendation to always extend the fourth segment at least a little bit - to ensure that dirt, grit, etc., doesn't get into the twist locks.By the way, it is a total pleasure to grip all three locks, turn them slightly, extend the legs, and tighten. All of 10 seconds. I really, really like this tripod, and the fact that B&H price-matched, plus the Gitzo rebate, brought the cost down well under $700. Absolutely well worth it. A fantastic tripod that I'm sure I'll use forever. Thanks, B&H!!

Comments about Gitzo Series 3 6X Systematic Carbon Fiber Tripod (Long):

The GT3542LS is a terrific tripod. It is very stable, it is easy to set up, and the leg locks are fast to use and easy to secure. It is rated to 55 lbs., which is sufficient for nearly all super-telephoto lenses.

The platform is very stiff, which is needed for maximum stability and especially for shooting big lenses on gimbals. I found that my leveling base introduced vibration into my gimbal and therefore into my camera gear. Now I install my gimbal directly on the GT3542LS and the head is much more rigid with less vibration.

The platform has a built-in ratchet to tighten it to the tripod, so there are no tools to lose (which apparently was an issue with earlier model 3-series Systematics). Also, once loosened, to remove the platform, you must still push in a button. Hence, Gitzo built in a redundancy system to guarantee that your lens will not pop off when flipping your lens over your shoulder.

Size-wise, this tripod is longer, thicker, and heavier than my Gitzo Series-1 and 2 travel tripods, but it compresses down to 22" long, which is fairly compact. The weight is comparable with the RRS Series-3 tripods. When the legs are extended, it is too tall for me (I am 5' 10" or 178cm). My guess is that it would be at ideal height for someone 6' or slightly taller. If you are shorter than 6', it can provide reasonably normal height on angled surfaces.

The feet are rubber nibs, which can be removed. Under the rubber are spikes. The bag includes snow feet, which look like old-style ski pole baskets, grease, extra locks, and other goodies.

Under the platform is a hook for hanging gear or weights for extra stability.

All in all, this is a quality tripod. It has innovative design features. It is rock solid stable with a very rigid platform. It is expensive but worth every penny.

Comments about Gitzo Series 3 6X Systematic Carbon Fiber Tripod (Long):

This is a very sturdy tripod with modest weight. It is tall enough to be at eye level for at 6 feet. It has a convenient midway mark on the top section so if you need it to fit a person a few inches shorter it is easy to match the legs. It is as steady as other reviewers note it to be. I use it for a Nikon 200-400 f4 lens and find that it is very steady though it is still best to use the VR if shutter release is by hand. It seems to be very well made and I expect many years of perfect service.I recommend it as a super tripod.

                  Bit the bullet

                  from Torrance, CA

Comments about Gitzo Series 3 6X Systematic Carbon Fiber Tripod (Long):

Finally bit the bullet. Going back and forth between RRS and Girzo. Then I read a couple of threads where these guys did a test comparing the gt3542ls against the rrs. A vibration test and the gitzo was better. So that made me choose the gt3542ls and I have to say I'm totally blown away on the quality and solid performance of this tripod. I did a test myself with my manfrotto 055cxpro and a arca Swiss z1 ball head. 6+ seconds to control vibration after hitting the tripod compared to <2 seconds with the gitzo and the same ballhead. I'm sold !!!! No regrets. I highly recommend this tripod.

A very good tripod, very solid and strong but very light.

The Center Column is NOT the Enemy

Comments about Gitzo Series 3 6X Systematic Carbon Fiber Tripod (Long):

I resisted even considering a Gitzo for many years, figuring they were way overpriced. But I came to realize that my previous 'pods, by Manfrotto and Feisol, simply weren't giving me the stability I needed for consistently sharp photos. It doesn't take much research to reveal that "everybody" knows that center columns are incompatible with sharp pictures. But for the work I do as a nature photographer (primarily in and around water), a center column is key to precise framing, and is necessary for attaching my ultralight rain umbrella (I wish somebody would create and market an off-the-shelf version of that).I needed to see for myself so I did extensive testing with a 500mm lens on two tripods--the Gitzo Mountaineer GT3542L (with center column) and the extra long Gitzo Systematic GT3542 XLS (no center column). I photographed a page of text from a magazine at 40 feet, which enabled easy and effective pixel peeping. The difference was stark. The center-column tripod compared poorly, even with the center column collapsed. But I looked at the two pods and wondered if the stability difference had less to do with the presence of a center column on the Mountaineer than on the beefy leg-connecting spider assembly on the 3542 XLS.So I ordered a third Gitzo tripod from B&H (I love B&H's return policy that makes possible this level of careful shopping). And I compared the column-less extra long 3542 XLS against the shorter 3542 LS with an accessory GS 3512S rapid center column. I am VERY pleased with this setup. It is super stable, even with the center column extended, and gives me the extended height and flexibility I need. The downside is the price ($ for the legs) and the weight (pushing 7 lbs with my Arca-Swiss ballhead attached) but I have finally learned that You Get What You Pay For applies to tripods as it does to most other gear purchases. And I still have my superlight Feisol tripod for travel and less-demanding applications.
