I've owned this bag for 4 years primarily for commuting with my gear on airplanes and by car and for day hikes. I use this pack almost daily for carrying my work laptop and every weekend for hiking trips with my camera equipment inside. Needless to say, this bag has gotten heavy usage in the time I've owned it.

I'll begin by saying that the design of this bag is quite clever. I like that I can use this pack for so many purposes, from just a laptop pack to a camera + laptop bag to a more traditional backpack. The outermost compartments are great for organizing and storing smaller items for quick access. The laptop compartment holds a large 17" widescreen laptop. I actually normally carry two laptops in the compartment: one large and one small thin notebook.

This bag is not intended to be super protective as the padding is relatively thin and flexible, but I've never had any of my gear damaged by this bag even with flying cross-country every 2-3 weeks for the last 7 months (I use this bag as a carry-on). I just use care when putting it down, stowing, and handling it.

The only real downside to this bag is that I can't really carry my camera with lens attached in the pack. I don't really find this to be an issue most of the time, but I can see that it might be an issue for others.

Given the price of this bag, I hoped that it would hold up, and it has done so very well. After 4 years of almost daily usage, the bag looks almost new. The materials on the bag and fasteners are great quality, and I'm impressed with how good this bag looks for how much I've used it. The padding on the back support are still rigid and supportive. Not even the stitching is fraying, and the rain cover is really a great feature not only for rain but also for snow and for dry dusty environments as well.

I highly recommend this bag for anyone needing a good versatile commuter camera/laptop/backpack. I'm impressed with the quality of Think Tank products now and will likely consider them as a top choice for future bag purchases.

I was originally attracted to this bag for its versatility. Although it can take up very little room, it does not offer sufficient protection for expensive gear. I also noticed that if the bag is not filled up or packed tightly you can feel your gear shifting around inside. I think it is a great idea for a backpack but not if you are entrusting it with the safety of often expensive photo/video gear.

We all have priorities for the purchases we make. Obviously, I wanted a photography bag that would protect my gear. Equally important was a bag that didn't add unnecessary weight to the 30 pounds of equipment that I haul. Most importantly, I needed a bag that I can take on-board a plane, regardless of whether it's a 747 or a small regional jet. The Shape Shifter meets all these needs. But here's the surprise! Think Tank has really thought through the process. The Company provides input that ranges from how to adjust the load so it's centered on your lower back to a 4-color, full-size illustration of the bag showing how to pack your gear properly. I have two other brands of bags that will, going forward, never leave my closet.

This would be a great bag except for the pockets for the equipment to fit into. Maybe I'm just not getting it but my cameras stick out of the two pockets they are supposed to fit into and you they aren't wide enough. I checked specs before ordering and it said it would fit my Nikon f4 but it is a wrestling match to get the two cameras in. Once I do wrangle them in, the bag is great. I love all the pockets and how compact the bag is.

I was looking for a backpack that would hold quite a few pieces of photographic equipment for an upcoming workshop I am taking requiring me to take a wide range of images using several skills so needed several primes, body, zoom and tripod carrying without looking like I am moving cross country. This bag is perfect.

Comments about Think Tank Photo Shape Shifter (Black):

Being a night club photographer and dj many nights I'm double booked carrying everything I need to both dj then take pictures. I got this bag so I'm able to stuff it full of what's needed. It's form factor is great far from bulky. Straps well padded and size fully loaded is small. I had few other bags I felt like a turtle with a heavy shell lugging 1 camera body, 2 lenses, video light, Rhode mic, 2010 macbook pro, beats headphones, battery chargers, mac charger, note pad n so much more. Everything and j mean everything fits in bag with more room to spare without the added weight and bulk. Trust me you'll love this bag. Btw did I mention bag doesn't look like a camera bag unless you know the brand it's just a book bag at normal site.

My only issues with the bag are:
            1-Price:
although I love this bag $250+ is alot for it. Yea it space saver and super zippers but price point should be a far less
            2-Non attached lense:
at first it bothered me however I got over it very quickly mainly since that's the purpose of the bag is having camera in hand anyway

Comments about Think Tank Photo Shape Shifter (Black):

Like most photographers, I have several camera bags, for all different occasions, but after inspecting the Shapeshifter, I know it will become one of my favorites. Like all Think Tank bags, (I have four different ones), they are all constructed with impeccable craftmanship and you can tell that quite a bit of thought goes into its design. It's evident that photographers have a say in what they're creating; products to assist the photographer. As with all their products, quality stands out. If this type of bag fits your needs, you will not be disappointed.
I just took my daughter to get head shots done with the famous NY head shot photographer, Peter Hurley, and what do I see laying next to his desk, none other than a Think Tank Shapeshifter. Turns out his Executive Assistant had just purchased one as well. Great minds do think alike!!

This is the best backpack ever for my needs. It holds a lot of equipment and not just what is advertised because of the clam shell enclosure. This backpack is brilliant all the way around, and I love the way it compresses down to a small size. Just get it and you will see what I mean.

As a run-and-gun filmmaker, this is a dream. I need to be able to pack light, and move quickly.I had been using the Think Tank Airport TakeOff Rolling case with Backpack straps for the better part of two years, and this shapeshifter backpack is so much more effective for my uses. Most of what I shoot are on-the-fly interviews, and bboy/breakdancing, and since most of it is out of town, it's nice having everything I need close by.In this bag, I roll with two bodies (5D, and 60D), 24-70 F2.8, 24-105 F4.0, and 14mm F2.8. A rode videomic pro, zoom H1 and wired lav, and a shoe-mounted light, round out the contents. My 15" Macbook Pro fits in the back laptop pocket, and tripod since snugly in the front pocket and provided buckles. The accessory pocket holds my computer and LP-E6 charger, 8 batteries, memory card wallet, filters, travel documents, etc.Best feature is that when expanded, no matter how much I put in the accessory pockets, it NEVER feels too bulky to zip up... and honestly, I'd say that I put a fair bit in.The only thing I need to carry by hand if I'm using them, are either my video monopod, or glidecam HD2000.Love this bag.

With some airlines recently reducing the size of carry on bags, the Think Tank Shape Shifter was the answer to conveniently transporting my gear. 5DM3 and 6D both w/grips, EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS II USM, EF 24-105mm f/4L IS USM, EF 16-35mm f/2.8L II USM, Extender EF 1.4x III and other smaller items. Did not bring laptop as it was not needed, but it would have fit. I was able to zip up the shape shifter to the smaller size and there was no question as to it being within specifications. On this trip I flew on a 757 to a single engine float plane and the size and weight of the bag was never a problem. I highly recommend this bag.

Since I hate to put my camera bag down in the sand I performed the entire 3 hour shoot with the Shape Shifter on my back. I was comfortable the entire time! I could not have asked for more.

Seems to be a Great Pack for airline travel (specifically carry on) and for packing gear on location. Durable and spacious enough to carry a 17" Asus laptop, two D800 bases; a 24-70,2.8; 700-200 2.8, 85, 1.8 lenses, 900 Flash and a few other small items. Biggest disappointment was that the lenses must be unattached, so plan on a little time to mount your lenses on location.

Used this to haul 1 camera, strobe, and 3 lenses in main compartment. Carried 2 spare batteries, rain jacket, memory cards, chargers, MAcBook Pro and tripod in the rest of the bag. Other than the tripod carry at night, the bag looked incognito with all the backpacks in Europe. No external give aways for contents. Fit perfectively into the aircraft on flight over. The RRS tripod was in the suitcase. Strap alignment was very comfortable.

Although I returned this bag after going through it and loading it up. The idea is very nice, but just didn't meet my needs as I thought it would. As with all Think Tank products, the pack is very high quality and will outlast most photographers.

Great bag. Carried a D3, 2 lenses, a flash, battery chargers, various filters, and all the needed accessories. Also packed a laptop, iPad, and all the associated cables and chargers. The bag fit perfect in the overhead bin of small regional aircraft. My only complaint is that everything is packed unassembled so it takes a second to get the camera out and snap a shot. Not the bag if you are walking around taking pics but perfect for traveling with your gear.
