The Canon BG-E11 was added to my list of must have accessories for my 5dmiii the day I bought it. I had purchased battery grips for my Rebel XSi and 7d before and loved them so life without one for this new camera seemed like a non-option...until I saw the price.

I have to admit I was fairly upset initially. Frankly the grip seemed overpriced but what are you going to do? Once you get used to a grip you can't go back so I shelled out the money and placed my order. Now that I have had a chance to do a shoot with the grip here are my pros and cons:

Pros

The build quality is excellent. They've used rubber that is quite close to what's on the camera and as such the grip really feels like part of the camera as opposed to an accessory or afterthought. The extended battery life is an obvious pro but the extra tray for AA batteries is perhaps an underrated bonus, being a valuable feature for trips into the wilderness for example where recharging may not be a viable option as well as those times when they want you to shoot two more hours of party than what you were prepared for.

I expected all of that though having had two other grips prior. What I didn't realize about this grip is the fact that it has a multicontroller! You don't see it in the main picture but it has that wonderful nipple on the back of the grip just like the one found on the back of your camera. If you program that button to trigger your focus points it makes life so much easier its amazing. When you turn the camera vertically you have access to all of the main buttons, you can still access the quick control dial plus you've got a multicontroller on the grip. Win.

Cons

The battery compartment opens on the side (like my old XSi) rather than the back (like my wonderful 7d). At first I thought what a fail until I realized they wouldn't have been able to fit the multicontroller on there without moving the battery compartment door back to the side. This means swapping out that second battery is a royal pain in the...neck, but for that nipple it's well worth the sacrifice.

Ultimately, if you're serious enough to buy the 5dmiii, you will not want to be without this grip. It really shines the most when shooting events where speed and stamina are important as it allows you to maintain a natural shooting position while having access to all the important functions involved in composing your shots. Bite the bullet and buy this grip. You can thank me later ;-).

I found this to be considerably overpriced compared with comparable grips for other Canon bodies, especially considering that it does not even come with an extra battery pack. Adding the grip and a battery to your 5DIII is a considerable expense.I'm not thrilled with the new end-loading design style for the batteries. While it probably makes the weather sealing easier than the rear-door designs, changing batteries now requires more time and care. Instead of just popping the batteries in directly in a couple of seconds, there is now a battery tray that must be used (yes, even with the Canon battery packs, just like the AA trays). This tray is accessed by a 1D-style lift-and-rotate latch. The latchs is less likely to get popped open accidentally like the rear door slide latches on other grips, but also less fun to use with gloves, and looks like something that may break easily. The fit of the batteries into the tray is finicky, as they are very easily put in crooked. They like to jam on the electical contact tabs. The batteries load so simply into the chargers that it leaves me wondering why a similar care-free interface wasn't possible here. Overall this design simply seems cumbersome and like something that may be prone to breakage. Only time will tell. The 8-way joystick is now included on the grip, in contrast with the other Canon grips I've used. This does come in handy if using the 5DIII's option to set the selected AF points independently in horizontal in vertical camera orientations---the point must be selected while the body is in that orientation, and so the second joystick on the grip makes this easier for the vertical AF point setting. The body's battery door is now attached to the storage spot on the grip's stem in the same way as it is on the body. I.e., instead of simply sliding the door into a slot as on other Canon grips, you have to work the little hinge pin to attach it in place. It's cute, but it's also slower and more finicky to use. I'm not grasping what gains were made by using this more complicated interface. The main thumbwheel that attaches the grip to the body continues to be a weak point, working itself loose as on all Canon grips I've used. Compared other grips, it seems to lose electrical connection to the camera sooner when coming loose, thereby rending the grip inoperative and causing the action shot in question to be missed (for which I'm already a victim). Check the thumbwheel regularly.Overall, the grip functions as needed, and general construction seems relatively solid (except as concerned above). Its design is not the greatest, especially for the silly price that is charged for it. But there aren't many alternatives, are there? I'm forced to give it a "recommend", for anyone wanting the functionality of the vertical grip and extra battery, but I would be thrilled to do otherwise if there were another product available to recommend instead. As always, "your mileage may vary". Those new to battery grips will likely love it for the added functionality. Those who've used grips extensively for years may find themselves in a more grumbly mood about the design details, like I am.KDJ

Quality

Comments about Canon BG-E11 Battery Grip for EOS 5D Mark III, 5DS, & 5DS R:

Well made battery grip. Magnesium alloy shell makes it rugged and strong unlike the cheap plastic wannabes that flex with hand pressure. It feels like a camera body extension rather than an extension attached to the body.
Buttons and shutter release feel just as the ones on the body were when new. Grip helps balance and support body and larger lens for shooters with large hands.makes vertical shoots way more comfortable and precise. Horizontal shots allow for better and creative hand positions. Plastic battery tray fits like a precision unit rather than a slide in holder. When using a battery grip on a ultra high resolution body, like the 5ds r, the quality of the grip becomes just as important as does the glass and tripod. Dont skimp at this point or it will eventually cause you to miss your best shot !!!

Great for extended battery life.

Comments about Canon BG-E11 Battery Grip for EOS 5D Mark III, 5DS, & 5DS R:

I purchased this grip to use with the 5DSR. When I'm out shooting the last thing I want to think about is the battery. I shoot a mix of pro and semi pro bodies. The pro batteries generally last all day, but the semi pro bodies need two batters to last that long, especially if GPS is used.

I also like the feel of a bigger body that is the result of adding a grip, especially when used with large telephoto lenses.

Comments about Canon BG-E11 Battery Grip for EOS 5D Mark III, 5DS, & 5DS R:

I've had battery grips for all my Canon systems since 2009, and this grip for the 5D MKIII keeps the trend going. It's durable, responsive, feels good in the hand, and has the same quality as the camera it attaches to. The ability to turn my camera to portrait orientation and not have my wrist bent at odd angles all day pays for the grip by itself.

I've only had this for a couple weeks and I'm still getting used to it. I love the extended battery life and the option to use AAA batteries but still trying to get used to the extra bulk.

The Grip was easy to install, and had some nice features. I was surprised by how much weight it added to the camera.
All in All, I am very happy with it, gives me much more shooting time.

I love the upgrade from the battery grip for the MK II. I feel like the batteries are safer. Other than that it's pretty much the same and works great.

The price is a little high, but very high quality battery grip. Great for extended shoot. I bought it to use on time lapse sequences and it performs as expected. typical Canon quality. Its worth it.

I am on my third Canon digital camera and have used a battery grip on all three. It does add a bit of weight and bulk but the extended shooting time and additional balance when using larger lenses is worth the extra wt. and bulk.
My experience in dealing with B&H was once again a pleasant experience. Shipping was prompt and free and B&H will continue to be my primary source for all my camera and photography needs.
Thank you B&H

Works perfectly on my 5DS. Does add a considerable amount of weight to your camera, but nonetheless, a great accessory. Much better overall feel for shooting in both horizontal and vertical positions. Option to use AA battery cartridge is a bonus.

Comments about Canon BG-E11 Battery Grip for EOS 5D Mark III, 5DS, & 5DS R:

I've used various off brand battery grips. A few Vello and a Vivitar. I had replaced two of the Vello brand. Once by sending in for repairs and the second buying a new one. The Vivitar didn't last more than a few hours before failing. Being a professional photographer it's more important to have gear that works 100% of the time rather than saving a couple hundred dollars. I should have saved myself time and money years ago and just paid up front for this.

Looked at a lot of aftermarket grips but if you spend the money on a great camera, don't void the warranty with a knock off accessory. This Canon Grip functioned properly and feels good in the hand

Comments about Canon BG-E11 Battery Grip for EOS 5D Mark III, 5DS, & 5DS R:

I've used Canon SLR and DSLR camera bodies and lenses for many years. I've owned original F-1's with motors all the way up to my 1D X! The 5D bodies I have are great ( 5D II, 5D III, 5DS R ) but, there always seems to be something missing in the feel! I add a vertical grip and the system becomes more balanced!

Comments about Canon BG-E11 Battery Grip for EOS 5D Mark III, 5DS, & 5DS R:

Disclaimer no 1; Although a great accessory for any camera, the battery grip should be chosen only by those who really need it as it adds volume and weight to the camera body.
Disclaimer no 2; I have original Canon battery grips for the following cameras I still use on a regular basis; 5D mark II, 7D mark II, 550D (Rebel T2 I think).
All original Canon battery grips are of the highest quality, weather sealed, and when attached to the body they give a feeling of certainty and assurance like no other. None of them has ever failed me, or has broken in any way, even after abuse. Most of the time the battery grips remain on the cameras for several months, until I decide to clean the equiment or use it for a lighter task.
Still, this specific bettery grip, is in a whole different league of its own! The build quality is beyond superb! It is amazing! It is exactly as good and as weather shield as the camera bodies it is intended for: It has more controls than most will ever need and it is the first time that I definately propose to people to buy it, especially if they shoot a lot vertically or under special conditions -given that the extra volume and weight is not a problem.
I was a bit disappointed by the high price of this item. Still, as soon as I opened the box and held it in my hands I could not believe the quality, the heavy duty construction how perfectly it fits the camera body. All original Canon battery grips are of the highest quality and fit the camera bodies perfectly, but this one is even better, even greater, the perfect accessory!
Disclaimer no 3; The 5Ds R with a brand new LP-E6N managed 1300 50 megapixel shots recording on both cards separetally, 80% of the pictures taken at ISO 1600 and above, and in the end still had a quarter of the battery remaining according to the camera indication. Weather was warm, mildly humid and it involved both indoor and outdoor shooting. So, think twice before deciding if you need this awesome yet heavy, bulky accessory!

This is the perfect accessory for anyone that does long shoots on location. Most of my photography centers around air shows and the few seconds it takes to swap a battery can mean a missed shot. It also helps to balance the weight of my 100-400.
