I maybe can open a leason and talk about the pros of Canon's newest speedlite – 600EX-RT, and that is how much I like this unit.

I heard people said some like like "If you don't take advantage of the radio transmition of the 600EX-RT, you are simply just using a more expensive 580EXII". I strongly disagree with the statement like this. These people might have never used 600EX-RT, and review it based on its specification. You don't give comment like this if you have never hands on with these 2 speedlite.

Well, everyone know about how good the radio wireless is, so I am not going to talk about it. I am going to talk about how good 600EX-RT is even if you only have one unit and use it on the camera hot shoe instead of wireless. The pros are (in comparison to 580EXII):
1. Better GUI
2. Easier to operate based on new designated buttons.
3. Better Auto White Balance.
4. Support 61 points focus system.
5. Wider and Farther
6. Sound to remind you battery cycle complete

I believe there are more pros, and I think it is worth the price difference in between 580EXII and 600EX-RT for use stand alone. So please stop saying the 600EX-RT by itself is just another 580EXII, it's not, it's much better than 580EXII. and it is even better if you have more than one of it, or have a ST-E3-RT.

So if you do not have an external flash for Canon cameras and thinking about buy one, get this! If you already have only ONE 580EXII, 580EX, 550EX, sell it and get this one before you invest more in the old technology. If you have MANY previous version of Canon flash, maybe stay with them with the 3rd party wireless trigger because they might not have great resell price in used market while they are still functioning well.

The 600EX-RT upgraded my older 430EX. During the first 6 months the flash worked exceptionally well. During the next 6 months, the flash began to fire intermittently. The Power reset and Clear reset became increasingly necessary for the flash to fire. During this behavior the pilot remained "red". The LCD display was bright and working; all functionality of settings and modes was as expected.

The initial conversation with Canon's phone support insisted the problem was specific to using rechargeable AA batteries. Within a few weeks of that discussion, the flash head failed completely. Canon's repair facility diagnosed the problem as hardware failure, and replaced the flash head. Now, a year later, the same failure is back. This is Canon's best Speedlite flash ? When you consider the cost of repair and shipping to Canon, then add the initial cost of buying the 600 EX-RT; I could have purchased a Quantum flash instead. Granted, the first hardware repair was warranty. But, (2) catastrophic failures in two years is too much.

My advice is this: if your business depends on your flash working. Even reasonably well. And, your clients demand "no excuses - you own it" , consider other Pro flashes. Any additional money spent up front is well worth it.

In closing, my older Speedlite 430EX ( bought open box) is still working) like the first day I used it. At nearly half the price of the 600EX-RT.

Good build, great light but very expensive, I also have 6 YN speedlights that seem to work about as good, but are a fraction of the cost.

Comments about Canon Speedlite 600EX-RT:

This flash does not differ much from previous versions which, like this, boat great quality. Compared to other flashes (e.g. NIKON), I would rate it with 6/10.

Comments about Canon Speedlite 600EX-RT:

Sturdy, strong, light weight flash. I use this on and off camera and I love it. It does eat up battery quickly but as long as you have rechargeable batteries you'll be fine. The flash is strong and easy to manipulate. It comes with a high quality case to protect it as well.

Comments about Canon Speedlite 600EX-RT:

Bought the flash in preparation of a family photo shoot of a close friend.
Used it for the outdoor portion of a large family photo shoot with a Canon 5ds and 24-105 l series lens.
Performed great with the wide angle setting outdoors in a very dark near rain setting.

No battery indicator

By The_Digital_1

Comments about Canon Speedlite 600EX-RT:

This flash does not have a battery level indicator... it just has a symbol that comes up on the screen when the battery is completely dead, and stops you from using the flash.

On top of that the completely dead battery symbol seems to be random when it comes up. I have had it come up, had to turn off the flash and turn it back on. I was able to continue to use the flash for many more shots before it came back again. When the batteries are truly low it doesn't give you the dead battery symbol, it will just work for a while then completely shut off. I am using regular Alkaline batteries, not rechargeables.

Perhaps I just got a bad unit... but it seems I am not alone. Do a google search for "speedlite 600ex-rt battery problem", you'll find hundreds of results.

Other than battery issues this flash has been great so I'll still give it 3 stars.
