I've been taking family portraits for almost 3 years now. I went from a Canon T1i, to the 7D, to 5D Mark III.

Anyone looking to upgrade from the 7D has a tough decision on their hands, as the 7D is a great camera. After reading hundreds of reviews, I decided to take the plunge.

I received my camera yesterday, and already used it for a family portrait session (natural light). All I can say is WOW! I use Lightroom to edit all photos taken ~ brighten eyes, soften skin, etc. Instead of spending hours in Lightroom, I was able to turn the photos around in a fraction of the time. The clarity is undeniable. I was able to crop the photos and not lose any sharpness (to the naken eye).

I performed a quick comparison between the two cameras using my Canon 100mm f2.8L IS USM. This comparison really doesn't do the 5D3 justice, but at least it will give you a good idea of the clarity, color, brightness, crop factor variation and sharpness difference between the two cameras.

Hope you find this useful, as I would have during my comparision shopping.

I shoot weddings professionally. I use a journalistic style where I need to respond to a shot quickly. Lots of useful new features. Focus seems to work better from a technical standpoint. To me, they are also holding back on some featurs so they will always be able to come out with something new on the next model. This I understand. What I don't understand is going backwards with features. The ability to see a highly visible focus point PRIOR to focus lock is gone. They have technical reasons for doing this but its hard to get used to if you had the Mark II, use manually selected points, and shoot where split seconds count. They made it better with firmware, but its still frustrating. Also apparently a fairly common issue is the joystick is fickle/inconsistent on many builds. The place where you rest your left fingers on the case while reviewing a shot is now angled, creating a very cool looking apearance and also making it much harder to hold in this position. You could hold it by the lens but if you shoot 1000's of images in one day you will know what I mean here. I wonder how much they tested it with real photographers. Overall I am happy (not thrilled) with it, so I am keeping it. It's the only option now at this price/preformance level.

I did buy this camera again

Comments about Canon EOS 5D Mark III DSLR Camera (Body Only):

I currently use this camera as my everyday, everything camera. However I needed another back up camera for weddings and other events. I decided to purchase this again because I know what it can do and don't feel another less expensive camera will perform. If something works, stay with it.

My first child

Comments about Canon EOS 5D Mark III DSLR Camera (Body Only):

I am a film student at USC and am completely over-joyed to finally own this camera. It's very popular at my school because of its relative affordability, versatility (we millennials like to dabble in both photo and video), and ease of use.

The saturation and vibrancy of the video setting is one of the first things I immediately noticed upon graduating from a Rebel to a 5D. It's a far more professional body, design, and all-around feeling. Shooting RAW is obviously a huge plus. There seems to be a setting for just about anything, and of course, I love having all the lens options that Canon provides.

I would highly recommend this camera to any amateur or professional, especially if they were interested in both video and photo. So far my experience has been excellent, and each use of my camera instills in me a willingness to create work that is worthy of my camera. As dramatic as that sounds, I really believe that high-quality gear inspires high quality work.

Super value & image quality

Comments about Canon EOS 5D Mark III DSLR Camera (Body Only):

I'm a hobby bird photographer using 7D's with the new Canon 100-400mm. The 5DIII is not in a league with the 7DII when it comes to fast focus, back button focus patterns and shutter speeds per second but it's unmatched when it comes to high ISO resolution. I can use higher ISO's and faster shutter speeds without any affect on enlargement quality (printing). With a little work in Lightroom you can make some scary high ISO's look great.

The 5DIII is not really considered a bird camera but if you're on a budget it can get the job done nicely.

Great upgrade from the mk ii

By Chris

Comments about Canon EOS 5D Mark III DSLR Camera (Body Only):

Video and photography functions have improved with this generation, the most significant being the autofocus. The mk ii was slow at focusing but I immediately appreciated how sharp and fast the mk iii is. I have shot some pictures with higher iso's (10,000 - 12800) with the mk iii and it does very well. I am really happy with this camera. I shoot video and photography of people and landscapes.

I upgraded from a 6d. While I like the 6d, I wanted the features the 5d offered.

The camera does everything it's supposed to, and does it well

There's a reason this model is so popular..

Comments about Canon EOS 5D Mark III DSLR Camera (Body Only):

So many great features, navigating them all takes a bit of learning. But Canon's outstanding organization of menus and arrangement of controls makes you appreciate excellent design. Wish it had wifi and would trigger my flash without an additional purchase. But great build, quality camera, a bit heavy.

TOP NOTCH CAMERA

By JIM

from FL

Comments about Canon EOS 5D Mark III DSLR Camera (Body Only):

Just got my 5d Mark iii in yesterday. Bought it from BH and took advantage of their Open Box program to save a little cash.(Highly recommend doing) It feels like a tank, I haven't shot too much yet (I have a shooting coming up in 2 days, I'll update this after that). I knew upgrading from a Canon 7D to a 5D Mark iii would mean better ISO, but I didn't know it would be this GOOD!!! It's crazy, ISO 3200 is barely even noticeable, I shoot concerts a lot, and can't wait to use this for my next one. Also to add on, it feels like a TANK... One thing I was a little concerned about on paper was that I would be downgrading in terms of FPS, this had like 1 less than the 7D, well, I DONT EVEN NOTICE IT!! No problem there at all. I know the "magical" 5D Mark iv may be here soon, but they've been saying that for over a year. If you need/want a new full frame, get this camera, IT WONT DISAPPOINT! (PS: BH had super fast delivery for free, I appreciated that!)

A very satisfied photographer

By Chris of Vienna

from Falls Church VA

Comments about Canon EOS 5D Mark III DSLR Camera (Body Only):

I love the ergonomics of this beast. Every button is placed perfectly. The dynamic range is just flawless and I never have to worry about buffer speed as I did when i was shooting another full frame camera brand coz the buffer speed of this thing is comparable to an Italian super car. Overall this is a must buy. I will update my review upon further use.

Best DSLR I ever owned

By Hype

from Brooklyn, NY

Comments about Canon EOS 5D Mark III DSLR Camera (Body Only):

I upgraded from a Canon 5D Mark 2 and the Mark 3 to me is everything that I wish I had in the Mark 2. The number one thing that continues to amaze me is the focusing system. I shoot mostly portraits and late night events, not only do I see the improvements; I am receiving better reviews from my clients. The only drawback may be price and I wish it was faster (fps). Overall, this camera suits me well.

Awesome upgrade

By Becky H.

Comments about Canon EOS 5D Mark III DSLR Camera (Body Only):

Buying the 5diii was an upgrade from my crop sensor 50d. I looked at both the 6d and the 5diii. The AF system on the 5diii is what sold me. It was a great decision. Worth the wait. Highly recommend!
