I've been taking family portraits for almost 3 years now. I went from a Canon T1i, to the 7D, to 5D Mark III.

Anyone looking to upgrade from the 7D has a tough decision on their hands, as the 7D is a great camera. After reading hundreds of reviews, I decided to take the plunge.

I received my camera yesterday, and already used it for a family portrait session (natural light). All I can say is WOW! I use Lightroom to edit all photos taken ~ brighten eyes, soften skin, etc. Instead of spending hours in Lightroom, I was able to turn the photos around in a fraction of the time. The clarity is undeniable. I was able to crop the photos and not lose any sharpness (to the naken eye).

I performed a quick comparison between the two cameras using my Canon 100mm f2.8L IS USM. This comparison really doesn't do the 5D3 justice, but at least it will give you a good idea of the clarity, color, brightness, crop factor variation and sharpness difference between the two cameras.

Hope you find this useful, as I would have during my comparision shopping.

I shoot weddings professionally. I use a journalistic style where I need to respond to a shot quickly. Lots of useful new features. Focus seems to work better from a technical standpoint. To me, they are also holding back on some featurs so they will always be able to come out with something new on the next model. This I understand. What I don't understand is going backwards with features. The ability to see a highly visible focus point PRIOR to focus lock is gone. They have technical reasons for doing this but its hard to get used to if you had the Mark II, use manually selected points, and shoot where split seconds count. They made it better with firmware, but its still frustrating. Also apparently a fairly common issue is the joystick is fickle/inconsistent on many builds. The place where you rest your left fingers on the case while reviewing a shot is now angled, creating a very cool looking apearance and also making it much harder to hold in this position. You could hold it by the lens but if you shoot 1000's of images in one day you will know what I mean here. I wonder how much they tested it with real photographers. Overall I am happy (not thrilled) with it, so I am keeping it. It's the only option now at this price/preformance level.

Definitely worth the investment

Comments about Canon EOS 5D Mark III DSLR Camera (Body Only):

I photograph portraits as well as some real estate work. I was WAY overdue on a new camera, have two of the older Canon cameras plus three lenses, so I decided to break down and invest in the Mark iii. I love it. No regrets. The colors are vibrant, the exposure has been accurate and as far as minimal tweaking in photoshop, the images are already bright, clear and colorful. I wish I had done this sooner. In reading the specs, I had misunderstood that for AE bracketing, it'll shoot more than three bracketed shots for my real estate work. While the 2 and 10 second timer option for this is a huge help, it'd be great to be able to select 5 or 7 bracketed shots instead of just three. That's not a deal breaker for me, though considering its many other perks. Now to save for the 85mm F1.2!

Superb image quality

Comments about Canon EOS 5D Mark III DSLR Camera (Body Only):

I have the 5d MIII for two weeks and I took very high quality images. I own a 7D and the improvement is noticeable specially with high ISO where the photografy is incredible clean. The only thing I do not like it is very noisy when shooting in direct mode. Two weeks it is a very few time to have a complete opinion on this camara but the images are very good quality.

Comments about Canon EOS 5D Mark III DSLR Camera (Body Only):

I've always shot crop sensor, so the upgrade to the full-frame has been amazing. I'd love the wifi function on this version, but I can do without. Missing the tilt screen from my 70D. Certainly has its major advantages and slight disadvantages. GREAT camera though.

Comments about Canon EOS 5D Mark III DSLR Camera (Body Only):

I have a Canon 70D but wanted a full frame camera. I take a lot of landscapes and pets and people portraits. I haven't had the 5D for a month yet, so I am still figuring some of the settings and features out. Fortunately, a lot of the icons and buttons are the same as my 70D.

Got my tax return so I decided to spend the extra on this guy instead of the 6d. And boy am I blown away with this thing. The picture quality is insane. The low light is leagues above the t5i I used previously. The full frame makes it feel like I have all new lenses. Simply love this camera. So excited to continue to get better with it.

Still in a honeymoon state of mind

Comments about Canon EOS 5D Mark III DSLR Camera (Body Only):

The Canon EOS 5D Mark III is the first full frame camera that utilized gapless microlens technology to insure that all light reaching the sensor is directed into a pixel well. This of course means better image quality compared to it's predecessor specially at higher ISO.

Although I must admit I was hooked with my 5D Mark II (great camera) and took me a while to adapt, once I really got acquainted with the 5D Mark III there was no doubt in my mind that this is the one.

I don't know of any real serious pro photographer that utilizes Canon gear who has not owned, still owns or has bought another 5D Mark III up to this date.....

Reviews claim the 5D Mark IV and the 5D Mark III look alike, to me the ergonomics on the 5DIII is more enchanting and that is because of the addition of the WiFi on the IV, but who cares about WiFi in a pro level camera when you get awesome results from your Smart Phone.... Hey I ask myself who has time to be in a shoot and at the same time be sending photos??

Now realistically speaking, I am not going to say that the 5D Mark IV might not be a better camera because there is always room for improvement we all know that and if I was upgrading from a

5D Mark II or a 7D (version 1) and had money to burn yes I would go for 5D Mark IV, but in my case as far as moving on from a

5D Mark III to a 5D Mark IV spending that amount of extra money would not make any sense.

If you are a first time buyer for the highly ranked 5D Series and want to get a great deal on a brand new one, trust me the loved by photographers everywhere 5D Mark III will not disappoint at all!!
