I've been taking family portraits for almost 3 years now. I went from a Canon T1i, to the 7D, to 5D Mark III.

Anyone looking to upgrade from the 7D has a tough decision on their hands, as the 7D is a great camera. After reading hundreds of reviews, I decided to take the plunge.

I received my camera yesterday, and already used it for a family portrait session (natural light). All I can say is WOW! I use Lightroom to edit all photos taken ~ brighten eyes, soften skin, etc. Instead of spending hours in Lightroom, I was able to turn the photos around in a fraction of the time. The clarity is undeniable. I was able to crop the photos and not lose any sharpness (to the naken eye).

I performed a quick comparison between the two cameras using my Canon 100mm f2.8L IS USM. This comparison really doesn't do the 5D3 justice, but at least it will give you a good idea of the clarity, color, brightness, crop factor variation and sharpness difference between the two cameras.

Hope you find this useful, as I would have during my comparision shopping.

I shoot weddings professionally. I use a journalistic style where I need to respond to a shot quickly. Lots of useful new features. Focus seems to work better from a technical standpoint. To me, they are also holding back on some featurs so they will always be able to come out with something new on the next model. This I understand. What I don't understand is going backwards with features. The ability to see a highly visible focus point PRIOR to focus lock is gone. They have technical reasons for doing this but its hard to get used to if you had the Mark II, use manually selected points, and shoot where split seconds count. They made it better with firmware, but its still frustrating. Also apparently a fairly common issue is the joystick is fickle/inconsistent on many builds. The place where you rest your left fingers on the case while reviewing a shot is now angled, creating a very cool looking apearance and also making it much harder to hold in this position. You could hold it by the lens but if you shoot 1000's of images in one day you will know what I mean here. I wonder how much they tested it with real photographers. Overall I am happy (not thrilled) with it, so I am keeping it. It's the only option now at this price/preformance level.

This has obviously been one of the most iconic DSLRs of the decade, and for good reason. Solid build quality, works as expected, and the image quality is phenomenal.

Camera works great so far. I'm still getting used to a full frame camera and all of the other features available on this camera that I do not have on my 7D.

Got my tax return so I decided to spend the extra on this guy instead of the 6d. And boy am I blown away with this thing. The picture quality is insane. The low light is leagues above the t5i I used previously. The full frame makes it feel like I have all new lenses. Simply love this camera. So excited to continue to get better with it.

Still in a honeymoon state of mind

Comments about Canon EOS 5D Mark III DSLR Camera (Body Only):

The Canon EOS 5D Mark III is the first full frame camera that utilized gapless microlens technology to insure that all light reaching the sensor is directed into a pixel well. This of course means better image quality compared to it's predecessor specially at higher ISO.

Although I must admit I was hooked with my 5D Mark II (great camera) and took me a while to adapt, once I really got acquainted with the 5D Mark III there was no doubt in my mind that this is the one.

I don't know of any real serious pro photographer that utilizes Canon gear who has not owned, still owns or has bought another 5D Mark III up to this date.....

Reviews claim the 5D Mark IV and the 5D Mark III look alike, to me the ergonomics on the 5DIII is more enchanting and that is because of the addition of the WiFi on the IV, but who cares about WiFi in a pro level camera when you get awesome results from your Smart Phone.... Hey I ask myself who has time to be in a shoot and at the same time be sending photos??

Now realistically speaking, I am not going to say that the 5D Mark IV might not be a better camera because there is always room for improvement we all know that and if I was upgrading from a

5D Mark II or a 7D (version 1) and had money to burn yes I would go for 5D Mark IV, but in my case as far as moving on from a

5D Mark III to a 5D Mark IV spending that amount of extra money would not make any sense.

If you are a first time buyer for the highly ranked 5D Series and want to get a great deal on a brand new one, trust me the loved by photographers everywhere 5D Mark III will not disappoint at all!!

Finally in a full frame

Comments about Canon EOS 5D Mark III DSLR Camera (Body Only):

I finally decided to upgrade to the 5D Mark III from my 7D. I was always extremely happy with my 7D, but have been upgrading my lenses to L Series with the planned move to a full size sensor at some point. With the recent drop in prices on the Miii, I made the move. "Amazing" is the first reaction I had! The visual difference in the picture is apparent immediately, even without diving into specific technical information. There is so much more image data in each picture! With my 2 favorite lenses, 24-105 F4 L IS and 16-35 F4 L IS, I quickly sold my EF-S lenses, and will be selling my 7D body very soon. Being able to use the full capabilities of my lenses was worth every penny spent on the 5D. My dominant use of my camera in winter is long exposures of scale models for extended depth of field. I've had the camera less than a month and I'm being surprised every day with it's capabilities.

Still not the best at high iso range... but passable for most applications

Open Box - very happy!

By Allie

Comments about Canon EOS 5D Mark III DSLR Camera (Body Only):

I purchased an EOS 5D MkIII open box since money is a bit tight and even a savings of $250-350 is a big deal for me when this camera was a stretch purchase. I was a little nervous after someone at B&H referred to it as a floor model, but when it arrived it was in pristine shape and with a shutter count of 0. I honestly never would have known that it was not a brand new camera. In terms of the camera itself, it is exactly what I was expecting. I'm not going to gripe about features it doesn't have that I enjoy (like wifi and touch screen) because I knew its specs well when I bought it and I am guessing that most other shoppers will have critically considered them as well. It does a beautiful job at high ISO and I am loving the autofocus and number of AF points.

Love the Mark III!

By Avi the Photographer

Comments about Canon EOS 5D Mark III DSLR Camera (Body Only):

Love the Mark III. Super glowey when shooting at 1.4 and high shutter speed. The navigation is slightly different than the Mark II so taking a minute to get used to. Some updates I like and some I didn't need - but nothing too major that would effect my overall happiness.

Purchased 3x

By 1973

from Undisclosed

Comments about Canon EOS 5D Mark III DSLR Camera (Body Only):

This is my 3rd time purchasing a 5D Mark III. The first two were for myself and this last time was for my son. This camera captures great images!!! The focus wanders a little bit in low light situations but every camera I've ever used does. If you're switching over from a crop sensor and worry that this might be too much camera for you don't be intimidated. Canon cameras all work very similar so you'll feel right at home. This camera just does more of everything and everything better! I was using a 5D Mark III and a 7D Mark II and switched over to a 1Dx Mark II and a 5Rsr. I thought I would be upgrading and more happy but there are many times I miss my 5D Mark III. You can't go wrong with this camera. It's a great all around camera that is perfectly capable of all types of photography.

Nice Upgrade

Comments about Canon EOS 5D Mark III DSLR Camera (Body Only):

My backup camera for the Canon 6D was the 7D. I've had the 7D for 5+ years and it is beginning to malfunction regularly. With the price reduction on the 5D Mark III I purchased one, and this is now my main camera, with the 6D for a backup. I don't see much difference in the IQ between the 6D and 5D, but the 5D has a better focusing system and it is nice to have the white balance button back.
