I bought the Nikon D3200 as a replacement for my old trusted D80 and D40x combo. I also decided to downsize my lens collection to just two lens (for now) with the kit 18-55mm lens and the 55-300mm package lens for portability purposes. I have shot stills extensively for years now and I plan on do so on a ongoing basis but I am interested in doing motion work as well.

I notice that autofocus for still images is snappy in all sorts of lighting conditions (as long as there is some illumination, it can lock onto the subject). I used it extensively in a dark reptile conservatory at South of the Border and managed to capture quite a few good shots of the reptiles in their dark tanks.

As suggested on many DSLR filmography sites, I rely on manual focus for any video capture since autofocus hunts and creates a lot of audible noise. I tend to pre-focus on my subject and maintain a consistent distance from my subject.

As far as ISO noise goes, at 100% magnification, sure you are going to notice a lot of noise at higher ISO levels but once images are downsized, it is reduced drastically. Thankfully I have to do that for many of my images thanks to the 24 megapixels. In short, do not worry about any noise issues.

All in all, I definitely recommend this camera. The only things that I really miss compared to my D80 are the ability to autofocus with older lens, the Nikon CLS flash commander mode, and bracketing.

I recommend this camera for anyone who has never owned a DSLR and is looking to buy one for day to day needs.

Being a Canon user, I found certain aspects of this camera rather convenient.

I love the ability to change autofocus points on the fly, whether using the viewfinder or display.

I love how light and agile the camera is, and I found it really handy for indoor shooting at a family party.

Niw time for my complaints. I'm not an expert, but I found this camera way too simple.

The settings are very blunt, and don't offer the user choice that higher class cameras have. I only recommend this for regular shooting.

Sometimes I would experience lag with the shutter, and I missed a lot of shots. There was also sometimes lag with autofocus.

I only used this camera for about two hours or so, and I killed the battery. If you only have one battery, and plan on using the display often, you will drain the battery quite fast.

Sports mode is also a drag, but at an entry level, I expect nothing less.

One last complaint, the usb connection would not function. I hope this is an isolated problem.

This is a great over all camera for the soccer mom or aunt out there just looking to have high quality imagery at a reasonable cost. I give this a 3 out 5.

Great beginning camera, super easy to use, plenty of tutorials/guides. Primarily photographing product in a light box up until now on an old Nikon D80. This definitely feels like a step up and I appreciate all the available help as I use my camera for new things.

Still learning all the bells and whistles, but thus far I have enjoyed using the camera. One thing I didn't expect and didn't even think to check out prior to purchase was the fact there is no AC plug. I have found that there is a unit that fits the battery cavity that can be plugged in, thus providing the power. I like how the camera sits in my hand and some weight to in. Good camera so far.

Life Long Nikon FM10 Owner

Comments about D3200 DSLR Camera with 18-55mm Lens (Black):

First my compliments to Christopher of B&H Photo, the Pro who assisted my purchase. He was extremely kind and patient. He understood my trepidation going from film to DSLR and my need for a viewfinder rather than "live view" as in a point and shoot. Regarding the body of the camera: it gives me confidence that many components of the D3200 - the memory card, battery, shutter and on/off - are in my right hand grip. The feel of the camera is comfortable and natural for me. I love the Diopter. Regarding the Nikon direction booklet: it actually scared me, so I purchased "Nikon D3200: From Snapshots to Great Shots" by Rob Sylvan which calmed me way down. Sylvan's book made the menus of Manual Setting easier to find and navigate. Needless to say I started by taking a few exposures in Autofocus. The color saturation and balance are absolutely beautiful. Color just washes over you. I have only had the camera for two weeks or so and need to shoot a lot more in Manual Setting and also indoors. I would love to come back and give an update. Thank you very much.

I have worked in local television since 2003 and have had interest in photography for a number of years. But over the past year, my interest has become much more serious. And I could not have asked for a better learning tool than the D3200. The camera has great featuers and, while it has limitations, it has all the tools you need to make some beautiful images. I do a lot of street photography, but have been able to book a few portrait sessions here and there. While I know that with a better tool, I could do even better, I have been overall very happy with the camera's performance.

Comments about D3200 DSLR Camera with 18-55mm Lens (Black):

The two most important items for me on this camera are its ability to take JPG/RAW at the same time, and a remote for taking timed photos. I wish the remote would work for a full 10 or 20 second self-timed photo, as for my use I have to be in the photo for magazine fishing articles.
Quality wise it seems about equal with my Nikon P510, but with the RAW file I can tweak it a bit more.
The included View NX2 software is very nice, and simple. Great for quick edits and conversions.

I've had my D3200 for a few years now and it's been nothing but reliable. It produces great images (if you know what you're doing) and is light enough where it can be carried around all day. I would definitely buy this again (if the D3300 wasn't released that is).

Comments about D3200 DSLR Camera with 18-55mm Lens (Black):

When I received the camera it was inoperable. I called Nikon because I wanted to make sure that it was actually defective, rather than operator error. The tech confirmed that it was broken and had me send it to Nikon for warrenty repair. Since I was in a rush to get it out before the UPS office closed, I did not think about it enough to realize how bad the advice was. If I had sent it back to B&H, I would have had a replacement by now. Instead, I may have to wait weeks to get back my defctive (but hopfully repaired correctly) camera.
