...before you pass judgement on this lens...I imagine some will start blasting away right off the bat at f/1.8, and then pronounce the lens is "soft", or, they received a "bad copy" (I love that one). The fact is, f/1.8 has a RAZOR THIN d.o.f., and can trick some into misconstruing what's happening with the lens. I DID find I had to fine-tune the focus a tad (+3) on "my copy"...

SO, with all that out of the way, the lens is exactly what I needed...a replacement for my 35mm f/2D, which I was never happy with...too much c.a. wide open (and even stopped down a few).
This 28mm f/1.8 does just fine on my D300.
Why four stars instead of five? The price...that skinny brass ring they put on the end of the lens barrel must be REALLY expensive...

This is a great lens but it is very important to understand that it has a VERY bad issue with focus shifting at apertures between f/4-5.6. I typically use my 24-70 but ended up dropping it and had to switch to the 28mm. This was the first time I used this lens at apertures of 4-5.6 and it performed very poorly. Before purchasing this lens, I would highly recommend looking into the issue of focus shifting with this lens.
Unfortunately, I learned this the hard way - when I went to review the group images of a wedding I shot... all of the images were out of focus and this NEVER happens with my 24-70.

Comments about Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 28mm f/1.8G Lens:

If you are thinking to buy or not this lens, I would say go for it. This 28mm lens is unbelievable sharp, fast and lightweight. Fits PERFECTLY on my D700 and D750. First I wanted to go for 24mm but for what I do 28mm is wide enough. Very happy whith it.

Comments about Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 28mm f/1.8G Lens:

I really thought long and hard over this one. All of the online reviews indicated that this was a questionable lens with issues. I then noticed that virtually all of those reviews were from 2012. The recent reviews were much better. I took a chance, knowing the B&H would take it back, and ordered the lens. WOW!!! Great lens. Just the FOV I wanted. F1.8 fast and sharp. Looks great on both the D810 and D500. I highly recommend this one. This one is a keeper.

This is a must have lens as I enjoy what prime lenses bring to my photography.  Zoom lenses are great but this prime lens along with many other primes delivers.

Silver Medal for this Compact Little Lens

Comments about Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 28mm f/1.8G Lens:

I purchased this lens during one of the Nikon sale event ($100). Despite some passionate love-it or hate-it reviews I found online I have grown to appreciate this lens.

Let me be clear: this lens is not as sharp as a Sigma ART lens nor as versatile as a nifty 50. If you're the type that likes to discuss bokeh and microcontrast this lens may also not be for you. I see the audience for this lens as someone who wants a dependable piece of street glass or who would like an 'always on the camera' lens which get the job done and does it well. I doubt I'd ever use this lens for a portrait shoot, but I'll definitely be taking it with me on my next vacation or family visit.

If it seems like I am giving more 'cons' than 'pros', that's not the point of this review. I took over 400 shots with this lens and processed the keepers fully in Lightroom CC before I decided to keep this lens. I wanted to be sure this lens was for me.

Pros
- Lightweight
- Excellent center sharpness at 1.8
- Good contrast in 'fair' lighting conditions and excellent contrast in good light

Cons
- Longer lens length than expected
- Non-center focusing can be a little dodgy (using at D750)
- Focus speed/ accuracy could be better in Continuous focus mode (works great in single servo)

I hope this review helps. As a part-time professional I found this lens to be a pleasure to use once I understood it's strengths and weaknesses. This'll little guy sits nicely between my Sigma Art 20mm and 35mm primes, and I expect we'll stay friends for a while.

If you are looking for a general-purpose wide-angle lens this is it. The lens is sharp, fast and lightweight. This lens is by far better than my 17-35 at a third the price and weight. If you can get one with the instant rebate and from B&H you'll be happy you did.

Love this lens. I knew it would be good from the reviews I had read ahead of time, but I did not realize it would be this great! At f/1.8 it's so fast that image stabilization would only cause an unduly weight-burden. Thus, the lens is also super compact, light-weight, and very portable. Use it as my general purpose walk-around lens now for city photography.

Comments about Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 28mm f/1.8G Lens:

Purchased for a DX-size 7100, as an everyday lens. I'm currently using a 20mm f/2.8 D, with an equivalent FL of a 30mm lens. I was hopeful this 28mm would give me a slightly tighter view for more versatility, plus better low-light performance, in a lightweight, low-profile, weather-sealed package.

Given that the 35mm DX does pretty much the same thing, this lens isn't worth the $550 I paid used, and certainly not worth whatever it costs new, for a DX. I was hopeful the better build/optics (and N coating) would help contribute to pics with more contrast/pop but I couldn't really tell a difference.

Further, I echo what others have said: the build quality seems lacking. I ignored other reviews saying the same thing, believing it to be anti-China bias. Comparing this lens to my 50mm 1.4G, the 28mm 1.8G seems really loose. The autofocus is slow and oddly noisy, giving me no confidence in the long-term life of the lens.

And, its strangely long. Not sure why its so long, but it looks and feels like a cheap kit zoom lens and sticks out really far from the body. There's nowhere to grab it except the focus ring, which is really too big for a wide angle lens. Ergonomics are bad, is what I'm saying.

So, one star off for build/profile and another star for poor value, optically. Its not a bad lens at all, but not worth it for a DX body. If I had an FX body, I'd buy the 24mm that came out this year instead...

I'm a Nikon user from way back (more than 30 years), and I have never been disappointed with any of their products. Until now. I had ordered this lens a couple of months ago but didn't have a chance to use it until recently, only to find that it takes quite a bit of effort to get it mounted to my D810 (very tight), and the focus is not sharp -- not even close -- at any aperture. I'm currently working on a documentary film project and haven't had time to devote to troubleshooting the lens, so when I do I'll update this review if I discover the problem -- it may just be a defect with this individual lens, and not indicative of a problem with all of this model.

This lens is perfect for what it is. Warm and sharp, small and light. I used this a lot at first but eventually I sold because I already owned the 35mm 1.4g and couldn't justify it sitting around in my bag. If I didn't have the 35mm already this would be one of my main lenses especially at the very fair price. The AF might be a little slow and the construction isn't as "tough" as the f1.4 line, but its less than half the price. None of those reasons are why I sold it. Its just very similar to 35mm...

I use it for landscape and people and sports. I love that it's SO light weight... amazing. And it looks sharp corner to corner, which to be honest I was surprised at. On the down side, there is a bit of play in the focus ring which is a minor annoyance. It would be nice if this were a ED lens, but oh well.

Very nice lens. Crisp and sharp. Can't beat it for the price. Also, very light weight.

Comments about Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 28mm f/1.8G Lens:

I decided to purchase the 28mm lens specifically for landscape photography. I am quite surprised at how well this lens captures the image. Depending on what lighting condition I am shooting in (low light, natural light, etc) there is a slight vignette around the edges of the image. This has only happened in low light situations. If the vignette is very cumbersome, it doesn't take much with Lightroom to correct the problem. The deciding factor (aside from the reviews) was the example images from this lens. I watched many videos on YouTube comparing this lens to others that were similar. Honestly, for the price you can't beat it. The images that this lens produces are fantastic!
