Considering the price, this lens is a real gem in my opinion. This is the second example of this 14 mm w/a lens from the Korean producer, the previous one was sold under the Rokinon brand, yet those lenses are identical. Both my lenses have been used on full frame DSLR cameras, the 5D MkII an now 5D MkIII, and my evaluation is purely based on its properties when used on FF cameras. Those who like w/a lenses and the effect they can give must like this lens. One has to be aware that this lens does not autofocus, nor does it communicate with the camera in any other way. Both focusing and setting the aperture have to be done manually, the latter by turning an aperture setting ring on the lens.. The most obvious camera setting is thus AV, and the camera will set the correct exposure according to the aperture setting. Everything is manual, and for the inexperienced, this can bebe a problem. However, getting everything in focus when shooting landscape in bright light is almost a no brainer; opting for f/11 and a focus distance of 2 meters brings everything in focus from 0,8 meters to infinity. Focusing on near subjects with the lens wide open can be tricky through the viewfinder, and is best done using Live view, if the camera has got that option. This lens is sharp from corner to corner, and C/A is no more apparent than on more expensive lenses. W/A or perspective distortion is as should be expected with a lens that wide. A "trademark" for this lens is a rather nasty phenomenon, "moustache distortion", not so much a problem in landscape photography, but a real party spoiler when shooting buildings and structures. This effect can be overcome when processing raw files in PS or LR by using a special lens correction profile for this lens. The profile does not work for cameras with APC sensors.Color rendition is generally good, the lens has its own character in this respect, and it takes a bit of practice in PPS to get the most out of it.Having gone through the initial learning curve, this lens is a real joy to use, and opens some exciting opportunities for creative photography. It will deliver fine results when in hands of a photographer that really knows how to work with w/a lenses, and who can master the old trade of operating a fully manual lens.

I tried four copies of htis lens (2 Sony E-mount, 2 Canon mount). One had a badly decentered lens producing softness along the entire left edge. The other three were more symmetric but all very soft in the corners on an A7R, even when stopped down. I get much better resutls on the same camera using a Nikon 14-24mm (at 14mm).

This lens was purchased with the intention of taking indoor/astrophotography/nightscape shots. Not only is this lens worth the money, but the value that you get is unparalleled. The quality of this lens could easily command double the price. Nighttime 2.8 is outstanding clarity and daytime shots are even better. Get this lens!

My only comment is that the infinity mark doesn't have a hard stop. I've seen this in sigma and canon so it's just something I wish was done, but maybe there's a reason for it.

Fantastic sharpness!

Comments about Samyang 14mm Ultra Wide-Angle f/2.8 IF ED UMC Lens for Canon EF Mount:

As the headline suggests, the images this lens produces are razor sharp. The manual focus and aperture are easy enough to deal with, although the focus ring turns very far, making it a little bit of a hassle if you want to take a quick image. This lens is fantastic for landscapes, even on APS-C. Minimum focus distance is 28cm, and even that close, the subject appears far away.

Comments about Samyang 14mm Ultra Wide-Angle f/2.8 IF ED UMC Lens for Canon EF Mount:

I bought this lens yesterday and went out to my city to take a few photos and it quite amazed me to see how good the photos were. There was slight softness on both sides and you do get barrel distortion since it's a very wide lens but it can be sorted.

I found it best at f5.6 to f8 and a one stop under exposed in exposure compensation.

I will be using this lens for a long time to come

The lens gave me the perspective I truly needed. I got amazing imagery and great depth of field. Great pictures for the price. Only thing that was expected was the manual settings. But other than that I love it for both pictures and video.

inexpensive, light weight. much sharper than i thought. i was looking for acceptable but got super instead.. i do not mind the loss of auto exposure. at this focal length i set it at f8-11, 1/250 sec and used the hyperfocal distance almost all exposures were workable in light room.

Great Value

Comments about Samyang 14mm Ultra Wide-Angle f/2.8 IF ED UMC Lens for Canon EF Mount:

I bought this lens after doing a ton of research. I was not disappointed. I got some great pictures inside mammoth cave and will be trying to capture some night sky pics in the Badlands soon. Keep in mind that it is all manual, but if you are even slightly familiar with how to manually operate your camera, you'll be able to get great low light pictures.

Comments about Samyang 14mm Ultra Wide-Angle f/2.8 IF ED UMC Lens for Canon EF Mount:

This is an impressive lens. Can be difficult to properly focus because it is manual focus, but you can use your live view to magnify in. Great lens for indoor work, vast landscapes and astrophotography. the lack of autofocus is why I give this 4 instead of 5 stars.

Great lens, great price

By Shawna

Comments about Samyang 14mm Ultra Wide-Angle f/2.8 IF ED UMC Lens for Canon EF Mount:

I compared this lens and a Canon 20mm and I ended up going with this one. The Canon was slightly sharper and had a bit of a warmer color tone, but I love how wide this lens is, both had similar distortion, and it takes great photos.

It has some distortion since it is so wide, but if you are doing landscape work (where you don't have too many straight edges) it is much less noticeable. There can be some dark vignetting at the corners as well.

i just took this lens to Iceland with me and loved it - I could get great shots of entire waterfalls while standing close enough that the other tourists were behind me and not in my shots. The pictures came out great, some had a few focus issues but that's on me since it has no auto focus and I need to practice more with a manual focus.

Comments about Samyang 14mm Ultra Wide-Angle f/2.8 IF ED UMC Lens for Canon EF Mount:

This is my first real astrophotography lens and it really hasn't disappointed. I've only been out a couple of times with it but at F2.8 the amount of light and sharpness it captures in total darkness is astounding! For such a low price, I very much recommend this lens.

Comments about Samyang 14mm Ultra Wide-Angle f/2.8 IF ED UMC Lens for Canon EF Mount:

I wanted a decent wide angle lens with a manual aperture ring for a good price, and this one fit all my needs. I'm using it on an adapter for a MFT camera, hence the need for manual aperture, but I can also use it on my 5D or 550D with no problem. I kinda wish it had autofocus for when it's not on the MFT adapter, but that's a minor nitpick as I like to manual focus more often than not anyway.

Comments about Samyang 14mm Ultra Wide-Angle f/2.8 IF ED UMC Lens for Canon EF Mount:

I was looking around for a great wide angle lens to use, and decided to give this a try. I like it, it has a nice sturdy feeling to it. I use it a lot for landscape shots and just walking around town. It would have been nice for an auto focus feature though when I want to snap a quick picture. Sometimes when I think its focused the picture is still a little fuzzy. The focusing thing is just a matter of practice though. I used to shot manual all the time, but I have been lazy since using auto focus features. But in short, it is a nice inexpensive lens without that cheap feel. This is great for landscape pictures, or when you're shooting in a cramped area.

Comments about Samyang 14mm Ultra Wide-Angle f/2.8 IF ED UMC Lens for Canon EF Mount:

As an Ultrawide, not having any electronics is a bit of a downfall, most notably the lack of autofocus often forces you to use a camera's LCD zoom feature (if it has one) if you're working at any ranges from your subject other than infinity.... However, the image quality is fantastic, and for my typical use in the studio or for landscapes, it wasn't much of an issue. Certainly worth the $[$] price range!I even managed to catch some great domestic animal pictures outside, simply by setting my focal point to where I wanted it, and using my camera's multishot burst mode while moving within focal range.Barrel distortion in most situations is minimal, and if you are shooting architecture or other settings that have lots of straight lines, I found that a software distortion correction filter, even in something free like GIMP, is more than capable of correcting for it.

Comments about Samyang 14mm Ultra Wide-Angle f/2.8 IF ED UMC Lens for Canon EF Mount:

I own a lot of L Glass and I have to say this lens is superb! I've been using this lens for about 2 years on a 6D. I find it to be extremely sharp! I don't think sharpness is all about resolution, microcontrast helps make images look sharp and this lens has it! Even when I pixel peep, I'm very happy with the sharpness. There is a "glow" about the photos and it has wonderful skin tones as only some of the best primes can produce. And to get normal looking faces (undistorted) at 14mm in a circle covering a good section of the middle area is an amazing achievement. My son has very white caucasian skin and most lenses have problems giving pleasing results. This lens delivers in ways that oftentimes the 16-35 L f/4 IS can't!! Much less post processing involved too! Sometimes none. Leave it at 3m/10ft and shoot at 5.6 or f8 and take the exposure compensation down 2 steps or even one full stop and just shoot! Everything is in focus. No effort required! It also has that "look" that only a bulbous front element can achieve. It still looks totally rectilinear, I don't like the look of fisheyes and this isnt one, rest assured. This is why I came to love wide angle in the first place. The photos obtained with this lens make me feel like "I'm there!". My 16-35 has a pretty sharp flat field and no coma either but this, I have come to realise, is at the cost of losing that special "wide look". There is a lot of distortion with the Sammy but the best part is you can work around it when you take the photos!!! There is weird distortion with the 16-35 L IS, and although subtle, it doesn't give me that ultimate satisfaction when I look at the images. And you can't correct it. With the Sammy 14, take your time composing if there are straight lines present and it's usually possible to get them all straight by moving an inch this way or a millimeter that way, and it's not difficult.

And this thing is WIDE!!! I can stand in a corner of a room and capture ALL 4 WALLS!! Interiors look better than with my 16-35, sorry to say Canon. There is a fair amount of vignetting wide open (usually only apparent at night) but the images are still great. Flare is extremely well controlled. Colour rendition is very warm, sometimes (only sometimes, not an issue most of the time) too warm but usually I don't get the purplish tone at all. And you don't need a polarizing filter as the skies are a deep blue. Lens cap is sturdy and for some reason, dust doesn't seem to accumulate on the lens. In fact, I don't think I've EVER wiped it!! It looks 100% clean after a lot of use. The built-in hood is small and seems to do a great job protecting the lens element. Solid build just over 500g, not light but not super heavy. Don't drop it on your foot though. It doesn't have IS so when things get to twilight stage, a tripod is handy. But in reasonably low light, you're fine at 2.8, just use the focus scale to get your subject in
focus at this aperture. With a bit of practice, you won't even need live view. You will be able to eyeball the distance. It's a real gem! I connected with it from day one and I have no regrets.
