Overall, I am pleased with the construction and layout with the bag. Areas of improvement: The stretch pocket on the side of the bag. The bottom portion of the bag should have been made with the same material as the rest of the backpack to help with longevity. The straps to hold the tripod in work great, but are a little large for my monopod. I will probably use different straps or Velcro when mounting the monopod. The padding on the back and straps are comfortable. Straps also have built in keepers. If the cable and lock were removed from the pocket, it would make a great spot for keys. The interior is gray which helps to make the gear stand out. Plenty of dividers were included which allows plenty of adaptability. As seen in my picture, I was able to turn one of the main dividers to hold my second body with a lens attached. There is plenty of depth with a gripped body. I did not have physical access to the Airport Essentials backpack. I would have liked to know how a gripped body would have fit with the cover closed. The Commuter is 1 inch wider, same height and 1.5 inches deeper. This is exterior dimensions. Interior .5 inches wider and 1.8 inches deeper. This is according to the measurements on Think Tank's website. Small zippered compartment in front of bag. There are many pockets within the compartment. There are areas to hold pens. A strap to hold keys. There is a section in the "lid" to hold a laptop and Ipad. I like the fact that these items are stored on the lid and not the back of the back pack.I also like the fact that the back pack looks more like a suit case that does not scream out, "I'm a Camera Bag!".The zippers are heavy duty YKK's Side of bag has attachment points for straps to hold a tripod. There is also a pocket that stretches to accommodate the tripod legs.Very comfortable straps with a stretch pocket and D ring on each side. Adjustable sternum straps. Lots of padding on the back. Removable waist strap.Lock and Cable in it's own pocket. Very sturdy and padded handle.Front has two sets of lockable zippers.Top has sturdy and padded handle. Small zippered compartment along with card holder.Bottom has handstrap along with two "loop" straps.Three main zippered compartments. Two largest has lockable zippers. Small zippered compartment on top large enough to hold memory cards in a case.Card holder has plenty of room for business cards.Metal "D" rings, adjustable sternum strap with strap keepers and stretch pockets.Waist strap can be tucked under the padding to keep it out of the way.Inside cover has two zippered mesh compartments. Rain cover it included along with the two tripod straps.Plenty of room for two bodies with attached lens.Adjustable dividers provide enough protections between sections.ripod attached with provided straps with two legs in stretch pocket. Equipment can be accessed with the tripod still attached.

Great case, like all Think Tank bags. Concerned though this would not be considered a "personal item" buy the airlines, when added to my roll-aboard. Also no good way to configure the bag to use some of the space for non-camera items, like headphones and other items. Because of this I returned the backpack.

Very Well-Made Bag for a Large Camera Kit

By Joseph

Comments about Think Tank Photo Airport Commuter Backpack (Black):

This is an extremely well-made bag for a large camera kit. As advertised, it will accommodate a laptop and an tablet as well as a lot of camera gear. I took it on a long African trip and found it would indeed fit in every overhead bin I encountered (including an Embraer Brasilia prop plane), although you may have to remove your laptop (as stated by ThinkTank). It turned out to be too big for the gear I needed to take, I tended not to carry it around much due to the sheer size, and it was heavy, so that I had an issue with weight limits. That stated, when I was forced to check my camera gear for my return international flight, this bag is heavily built and protective enough that it kept my gear absolutely safe. I would buy this product again, but in a smaller size.

Comments about Think Tank Photo Airport Commuter Backpack (Black):

It is very well made and a quality piece. It has lots of space and this is good. It easily handles all my Nikon gear, including D810, 5 lenses and flash (and more). Be aware though, that it is heavy once fully loaded with camera equipment. It was a close decision between this item and Think Thank's similar case that is equipped with rollers. However, on balance, I decided the back pack version would work for me.

Comments about Think Tank Photo Airport Commuter Backpack (Black):

This pack fits all my gear with variability in how I choose to pack it. Really well made and thought out. It's boxy and not the bag I would take out on trails but definitely when I am traveling with all my gear (2 mirrorless and 5-6 lenses, plus accessories).

Good start!

Comments about Think Tank Photo Airport Commuter Backpack (Black):

Received this yesterday, transferred everything over from my other bag, and already used it today for a shoot. Would go 4.5 stars if that was available.

This bag is so much smaller and more efficient than my last bag (Ape Case 4000). I fit exactly the same stuff in and it's so much more manageable overall size-wise. The Ape 4000 is a big brute, but a lot is lost to inefficiency. The Commuter is more squared off so you can pack exactly as much (at least in my case) in a smaller overall package. I managed to get the Ape on many flights over the past year, but it wasn't pleasant. This Commuter bag will be a dream by comparison.

Already I DO wish it had at least one more water bottle pocket on the outside (I shoot a lot in the SW desert) and I did like the 2 outside webbed pockets on the back of the Ape (for either water or flashlights, maps, etc.) The only outside pocket here doubles at the tripod leg holder so it won't be available for water IF the tripod is taken...which it is 99% of the time.

I also wish there were more bags that zipped open with the straps facing UP so that sand, thistles, etc, would effect the outside (rear) of the bag when laying on the ground, and not the backrest and straps . I think Loewpro is the only one that offers this, but it didn't look big enough for my needs.

So no bag that I've ever used is 100% perfect. But I think this one is at least heading the right direction...

Absolutely the best photo bag !

Comments about Think Tank Photo Airport Commuter Backpack (Black):

I wanted a bag for day trippin'. Not too big. Not too small. I tried similar bags from other manufacturers, but this one is just done right!

Inside dimensions are almost 2 " more in length and width that competitor's bags, yet the outside dimensions are about 1-2" less! Depth is inside where your gear is....not taken up by outside pockets and bulky shoulder harness and waist belt. Thus smaller lenses can actually stand up! Round soft handles makes bag easy to carry when full. Harness and belt put the weight on your legs and hips when walking for a while.

It even has a very nice area for a 13-15" laptop or tablet and a section for other small essentials.

I have used the largest Think Tank bag, the Airport Accelerator, for 5 years and still love it! This bag is just as nice, but more suited to shorter jaunts.

Never should have waited this long...

Comments about Think Tank Photo Airport Commuter Backpack (Black):

How many bags did I waste money on before I finally got this one... too many! This bag is perfect. 2 full sized bodies, 80-200 2.8, 16-35 4, 50 1.4, 105 2.8, 200-500 5.6 or 400 2.8 - they all fit in here plus ipad and 15 inch laptop. I love the locks, the fact that all of the above fits and it is still small looking and that I know I won't ever have to buy another bag unless I go over 400 2.8. I also know it will fit in the over head and that is crucial to me. Bottom line, don't wait - buy it.

Comments about Think Tank Photo Airport Commuter Backpack (Black):

Rugged yet light, flexible to accommodate all your gear. I use it to carry my gear without fear of having to check it in. Carries my 2 Nikon D810s, 24-70mm, 70-200mm, 85mm 1.4, 16 eneloops with chargers, 4 extra Nikon batteries and chargers, 2 battery grips, cables, manuals, and much else, yet its small profile easily fits overhead or under the seat. The backpack straps are comfortable and make running through airport terminals a cinch. Highly recommended.

Have been using the Think Tank Street Walker Pro, this is a great bag! Wanted a bag is just a bit small for those short weekend trips. This bag is smaller but holds a lot of gear for its size. It is very comfortable for the walk a rounds, allowing access to tight areas. Great bag, glad I bought it.

Comments about Think Tank Photo Airport Commuter Backpack (Black):

I needed to replace my Lowepro backpack because I just purchased several lenses that were too tall for it. The Commuter is perfect, it is an inch taller, which doesn't sound like much, but it makes all the difference between fitting nicely and being too tight to close properly.
It is very well made, very well thoughtout. I will never go back to lowepro. This is a pro quality product.

I am very happy with this bag which I purchased specifically for traveling with. It is extremely well made and holds a lot more gear than one would think based on the dimensions alone. I expect it to hold up well over time too. For some reason, the included lock did not work but the great customer support at Think Tank took care of that in short order. Overall, very, very pleased.

Comments about Think Tank Photo Airport Commuter Backpack (Black):

I bought this backpack specifically for a vacation to Hawaii. I already have a Think Tank Airstream, and the two made a perfect travel pair.

Between the two, I was able to bring my Nikon D750, 200-500, 14-24, 24-85 and 28-300 lenses, plus SB700 flash, backup batteries, chargers, cables, filters etc. PLUS my girlfriend's Sony 580 body, Minolta 24-105, 100-300 and a Tamron 17-50, a pair of carbon fiber monopods with heads, flashlights, backup drives…

The two bags are almost identical in size, meaning no problem for overhead airplane storage, or if necessary, under the seat in front of you. Once there, I was able to leave the Airstream in the room while taking what we needed for the day in the Commuter backpack.

Some nice features of the Commuter backpack: comfortable on the back (no matter how much I packed in it), plenty of padded strap adjustability, easy internal reconfiguration and the locking cable (handy for the back of the Jeep at Pearl Harbor where bags or cases of any kind aren't allowed).

The Commuter is the more flexible of the two – not soft-sided, but definitely able to pack (stuff?) more in, like hats and such in the outer lid.

The only thing I'd add (if anyone asked), is a side pocket or two (for sunglasses, etc) and the bag tracking system like the Airstream has.

          Great bag.

Comments about Think Tank Photo Airport Commuter Backpack (Black):

I have several Think Tank backpacks and I use them according to the type of plane I will be flying on when I take a trip. For example, the Airport Commuter will fit in the overhead bin of a Boeing 737 with a little bit of space to spare. I generally carry 4 lenses on 4 bodies and they all fit in this bag. If the smallest leg of a trip that I am going on is a 737, than this is my "go-to" bag. For a CRJ, Think Tank makes a slightly smaller bag that will fit in the overhead bin but it also means giving taking a lens and/or body. .

Comments about Think Tank Photo Airport Commuter Backpack (Black):

I use this bag to carry my gear when I am traveling. It fits as a carry on size and I use it to fit two canon 5d bodies, a 24-70 lens and a 70-200 telephoto lens. I love the compartments that can be resized to keep all my gear orderly. The side strap also allows a monopod to be attached to the bag so I can keep my hands free. The slot for my 15 inch laptop is also convenient as I speed through security at the airport.

The zippers on the bag are durable and the a lock is attached in the side pocket that allows me to feel secure with my gear.

I was doing a 12 hour shoot with no place to leave my gear, so I had this bag on my back. It got quite heavy after awhile so in looking for my next bag, I may be looking for more back support. I recognize though that my gear in itself is quite heavy, so this may not be so much a reflection of the bag.

All in all, I loved this bag. Good size!
