Discussion in the TalkEMount photo forum had me a little worried about this lens and its possibility of being soft at the extreme end (200mm). I was pleasantly surprised however that it is crystal clear in this case with my Sony a6000. Its zoom lock is very useful, and the zoom is smooth and easy when unlocked. It is a little large for a small camera like the ILCE E-mounts, but given its wide range (18 - 200mm) in good light it dispences the need for other lenses to be carried. Its focusing after major focal length changes can be slow.

Not as good as the original.

This lens is not close to the original Sony in performance. The AF is slower and at times non existing with low light. Tried both side by side for three days.

This lens is not close to the original Sony in performance. The AF is slower and at times non existing with low light. Tried both side by side for three days.

Worst part is the softness at the 200 end. Very soft in the center. Did not run any tests with corner sharpness for either.

Size wise is so close to the original that can't see how it would make a difference getting this one over the other. About same price, two ounces heavier and same length.

Hope this helps with your decision

A capable and useful lens

Comments about Sony E 18-200mm f/3.5-6.3 OSS LE Lens:

I'm using this lens on an a6300.

I would have to categorize this lens as "sharp enough" and "good enough." I am happy with the photos I make with it while understanding that I am trading off some optical quality for the convenience of fewer lens changes. I think some have rated the focusing action as slow, however, considering the great range this focus must rack through it is once again, "good enough" in my opinion. The focus ring is smooth and manual focus is a breeze with it. There is no dead band before the camera realizes you are trying to adjust focus. The zoom ring is very stiff. I can't tell if the ring is loosening up a bit with use or if my arm is getting stronger with the exercise. I don't really know what the lock is for at 18mm. Pretty useless unless you are pointing the camera straight down and want it to stay, for certain, at 18mm.

I had one disturbing problem with the lens at first use. When I would hold focus on a subject the focus mechanism would vibrate alarmingly and squeal loudly. I was pretty sure the lens was going back to B&H as that was really alarming. I dismounted the lens and reattached it and the bad activity was somewhat reduced. Each cycling of the mount improved matters a bit. Now I'm thinking the contacts on the lens might be a problem. I took a dry cotton swab and burnished the contacts. The problem was then gone. Since then there is no hint of the problem.

Lens Mount Defect

Comments about Sony E 18-200mm f/3.5-6.3 OSS LE Lens:

I bought this lens about November of 2016 and used it a lot starting in about March 2017 prior to a trip to Australia.  On that trip the lens became loose when mounted on my A6000 and my 6300.  No other lenses had this problem on either camera. I do not see a decline in photo quality yet but will probably not use this lens again for any important travel photography.  I entered a review on the Sony site and as of earlier today it had not appeared on the web site.  I am very disappointed in this lens.
The lens has not been dropped or otherwise traumatized since purchase.
I do not recommend this lens.

Great Lens For Almost All Pictures

Comments about Sony E 18-200mm f/3.5-6.3 OSS LE Lens:

I am using the lens with a Sony a-6000 mirrorless camera. Previously, I used two lenses that covered the same range as this one, but changing lenses on a regular basis was a hassle. Additionally, the process of swapping lenses caused small dust particles to settled on the camera's sensor that required cleaning. With this new lens I no longer have either of these issues and my photos are better than ever!

MEETS A REAL NEED

Comments about Sony E 18-200mm f/3.5-6.3 OSS LE Lens:

Until Sony offered this lens, the best bet for the A6000 or 6003 was the 35mm prime. The previous zoom version f4-6.5, though cheaper did not perform adequately. This one does for $850.00 and adds surprisingly little weight to the whole which was my goal. I have a Nikon DSLR cropped sensor and some very nice lenses for it, but the18-300mm zoom begins to wear down the joy of street photography not to mention the 'it's obvious what you are doing' factor. For a lightweight travel camera and lens, this product does not disappoint.

Using the 18-200mm on a6500. It's a great performer. Pictures are sharp and the auto focus is fast for my needs. Got the import model and saved couple of bills. Overall very happy.

Great lens!

Comments about Sony E 18-200mm f/3.5-6.3 OSS LE Lens:

I wasn't sure if I should have gotten this lens or the other, larger, Sony 18-200mm (silver). I can't compare it to the other Sony but this one is smaller, a good build, it performs great. The focus is quick on my a6500 and it's very stabalized even when out towards 200mm. I was nervous when it appeared fairly shaky as I looked through the viewfinder but after I pressed record it was smooth and worked really well!

Extremely Pleased With This Purchase :-)

Comments about Sony E 18-200mm f/3.5-6.3 OSS LE Lens:

We're planning a long trip overseas. I'm planning to take my a6000 for packing and space considerations. I have several of the f/2.8 Sigma prime e-mount lenses (small and quite good!), but wanted a versatile zoom as well. Found a like-new lens at B&H which was delivered on time and very well packed (!) today. Have been out and about shooting at all focal lengths. Great color, detail, focus. Just the smallest bit of loss of focus at the edges out at 200mm. But really, that's a nit-pick.

Comments about Sony E 18-200mm f/3.5-6.3 OSS LE Lens:

I bought this lens thinking it would be a good all-in-one travel lens. 2 days later, after testing it out around my house, I returned it. It's not a great lens. It's not a terrible lens. It's an OK lens. Colors do not "pop," images are not sharp, contract is on the low side, and it's a bit washed out looking in low light. True - it's more versatile than a point-and-shoot or smart phone camera, but if you won't be happy with just "OK," then this is not the lens for you. If you're willing to pay a bit more, and don't mind a narrower zoom range, check out Sony's 16-70mm f/4 OSS Lens. THIS is a great lens. And with the extra digital zoom available on Sony cameras, you'll more than make up for what you lose by not getting the 18-200.

I purchased this lens for my Sony A6000 to be my everyday go-to lens. It fits the bill nicely. The 18-200mm focal range covers all of my needs. The lens is light and makes a perfect walk-around/travel lens mounted on my A6000. I wish it were a bit faster than the f6.3 at the telephoto end, but there isn't an e-mount lens out there that meets that need.

Comments about Sony E 18-200mm f/3.5-6.3 OSS LE Lens:

I have used this lens on an NEX-7 body for almost two years. It is an ideal all-purpose lens for a traveler who prefers to carry a single lens to cover most shooting situations. In my opinion, carrying a lens bag with multiple lenses negates the advantage of traveling with a small mirrorless camera. Image quality is surprisingly good for a zoom lens with an 11x zoom factor. I use this lens for outdoor daytime photography of mostly stationary subjects (predominantly cityscapes and landscapes), and have not noticed the slow focusing described in other reviews; the lens I have used acquires sharp focus quickly. I cannot address its performance for action photography.

It randomly "refuses" to focus. It occurs every once in a while, but is now occurring more frequently. When it happens, the shot is lost. This does not appear to be uncommon with this lens. And Sony is not supporting us - $[$] to look at it. I was using it on a Sony Nex-7.

In the world of super zoom this is better than most. Yes it grows to absurd lengths and yes it is slow but no worse that the other comparable on the market.

Images are crisp, sharp (relative to what the limitations of this type of lens are) and the IS works well.

It also is amazingly light and well balanced.

This is my go-to Lense. When traveling, minimizing gear is a must. I travel internationally about 4 months out of the year. After years of constantly changing lenses, I've found that this 18-200 and a super wide angle is all that I need. I couldn't be happier.

I bought this lens for my new little take everywhere Sony A6000, which has been quite impressive as a camera you can throw in the car, a backpack, or your purse, and pull it out to shoot at a moments notice. The quality of the images taken with this lens is great, but it tends to search a lot, and sometimes won't even focus. I've just started using it, so maybe it's just me, but the lag time doesn't make me happy.
When Sony finally makes a Zeiss lens to go with this camera, specifically one that will go from wide angle to super telephoto, I'm in. Because there's nothing else available in this size, I would recommend it to someone who needs a travel camera, and doesn't want to carry more than one lens.

Comments about Sony E 18-200mm f/3.5-6.3 OSS LE Lens:

              This is a nice-looking, nice-performing, easy-to-carry companion for my a6000.

This is not for protraiture or fine-detail work. This is for taking with you to the zoo, amusement park, dog park, vacation, etc.

Depending on your model NEX/Alpha, it may not be good for low-light/indoors, as it drops quickly from its maximum f3.5 as you zoom. (I don't have that much issue with the a6000, a pretty decent low-light performer.)

It is as good as or better than any of the newer "superzoom" APS-C and mirrorless lenses out there, such as the latest Sigma 18-200 |C or Lumix 14-140 II.

It works well with the NEX/Aplha hybrid AF. It's quiet for video (Although, you may prefer the PZ version, if that is your main use.) And, with the built-in lens correction of the a6000, I do not see any CA, and only a little bit of distortion at the wide end and for close shots.

The biggest con is the price. Similar lenses for Canon/Nikon from Sigma and Tamron are half the price! Even the Lumix equivilent is ~100 cheaper.

But, e-mount apparently demands a premium compared to other systems, as the Tamron version of this for e-mount is around the same price as the Sony. (and the Sony version is rumored to be a re-brand of the Tamron, which it certainly bears a striking resemblance to.)

I do recommend it, despite it's high price tag, as it is really the best way to enjoy your e-mount camera in a sightseeing environment.
