I purchased this product while on a three month
vacation in Texas. The first time I used the tripod I was going to return it. Even tho it is rated to hold 17 pounds it looks a bit wimpy in the last leg section. However I thought I would test it a few more times. I'm glad I did. for my height 5'10" I don't even use the last leg extention. I really like the portability also how small and compact it folds down into. For me this has been proven to be a good choice.

I am a professional photographer and a wilderness guide and purchased this tripod for travel. At first it seemed to work fine but during light use a leg locking mechanism cracked - almost tumbling my camera into the dirt as it collapsed. The ball head is advertised as being able to carry 17.6 lbs. I was using barely 5 pounds of camera/lens and felt nervous. When wet, all the leg stops slip. It continually drooped unless I really cranked on the ball head dial. As a result I would have to compose well above where I wanted my eventual shot to be and it was a guess where the drooping would cease. It shook in a light wind and when using the hook the rubber gasket would always roll off. It was nerve racking to trust the strength of that hook to my backpack of lenses. Overall, it was over-exaggerated in terms of its capabilities, a light duty hobbyist product advertised as a semi-pro model. I owned a SunPak from Costco years ago that cost [$] and was more reliable. I tried to work with Customer Service at Oben for an upgrade and they defensively kept assuring me that this was the droid I was looking for. Not a good experience all around.

Comments about Oben CT-3561 Carbon Fiber Travel Tripod with BE-117T Ball Head:

I unbox tripod and loosen joints so I can extend legs. Two of the three open fine. Last section of 3rd leg pulls right out and two little pieces of plastic flutter to the ground. It seems they are the shims that fit around the leg and hold it from pulling out. (They are not visible on any other legs.) I place the shims back on and carefully reinsert the leg, slide it in all the way and then slide it out again. Same thing, pops right out and shims flutter to floor. Repeat. But now the leg is very stiff and does not move easily in and out. If that's what happens the first time I use it, no thanks.

On the plus side, price was good, it did come with a serviceable ball-head, came with a decent carrying bag, and it is light and compact. I wish it had worked.

Comments about Oben CT-3561 Carbon Fiber Travel Tripod with BE-117T Ball Head:

I decided to purchase the Oben tripod mainly because Inwas looking for a light Carbon Fiber unit with a Arca-Swiss type of mount to fit my Fuji XPro2. I used the Tripod in a shoot the very next day and I was very impressed with its lightweight yet sturdy built quality. The Ball head with Arca-Swiss type mount was just great with Fuji grip on my Xpro2. All in all I'm very happy with this unit and plan on using for every shoot.

Be Careful When Turning Leg Locks

Comments about Oben CT-3561 Carbon Fiber Travel Tripod with BE-117T Ball Head:

The positive is that the height is very good, although I haven't tested it yet with a very heavy lens. My concern at this point is that it doesn't take a very long turn for the leg locks to become disconnected from the leg. This allows the extending portion of the leg to just fall out completely. This happened to me outdoors at night and I was fortunate to find the plastic pieces which fell out and act as the stops when extending the legs. I'm used to clasp locks, so this may just be a learning adjustment for me. For now, I'm trying to find the sweet spot on the lock turns so that the legs extend smoothly without falling out.

Great size folded up, but too light without weighing it down

Comments about Oben CT-3561 Carbon Fiber Travel Tripod with BE-117T Ball Head:

The tripod is super light and really folds up into a compact package. It is not steady in any regard even in my living room I cannot imagine it outdoors. I would never trust my a7RII and a 24-70 GM or 70-200 GM and feel comfortable the thing would not fall over. That being said there is a retractable hook to hang your camera bag on it which weighs it down and makes for a steady platform. I am afraid if you put the last leg extended it would break with the weight you need to stablize it. I am keeping it for now because I think I will like it with a camera bag and a couple bodies and at least three lenses to make for a steady tripod and not experience camera shake. I think it could be very good for a RX100 or even a a6000/6500 with the kit lens but I would not trust it for fear of unsharp images or damage to my cameras. Any wind at all no matter how slight will move your camera enough to almost prohibit a tack sharp image not to mention slow or long shutter speeds. If they had not had a special for $199 or did not have the hook to hang my bag to stabilize the tripod it would go back. The ball head works suprisingly well it is good enough for a DSLR and 70-20 F2.8 but the legs are tooooooo flimsy to hold anything still and it is very tippy. It is a great lightweight compact package with a really nice carrying case and super for hiking etc. but you need something to weigh it down which defeats the purpose UNLESS you are already taking a camera bag which often is the case to that is why I am keeping it for now. The thing is cute and novel how it packs up but a tripod is used to get sharp telephoto (heavy) shots or longer exposures.
Without weighing it down, it cannot possibly perform unless indoors and it even moves indoors. It is the most unstable tripod I have ever seen unless weighted down.

Only used it twice so far but living in Montana along the Rocky Mountain Front I encounter plenty of wind and during my two uses it's been great. Spikes helped for stability and I was able to let it stand by itself in 20-25 mph winds with my camera on it. I like it so far

Used with a 400mm lens, at a short extension and 180mm macro (remote trigger) the tripod does well. Light enough to carry into the woods via pack. Not beefy enough for a heavy Canon 500mm lens though. Ball head functions well and has solid support/lock. Quality is spot on, aluminum fittings, with carbon thicker walled tubes . Didn't want to spring for the RRS branded tripod. To much money for my wallet, to see it get banged up on rocks or wet and salted at the beach. I pay to play and don't get paid to play. I do recommend the tripod but suggest a heavier option from Oben to support the heavy stuff.
