I'm a Gitzo guy but I just couldn't spend that kind of money on a carbon fiber tripod when I have a metal Gitzo that works just fine although heavy. I looked at the CT-2391 because it has less joints to flex but again, the cost kept me from pulling the trigger. Then B&H put the CT-2491 on sale at a considerable discount and I jumped on it.
I removed the center post for the low angle option.Everything is very solid even when the legs are fully extended. It's half the weight of my metal Gitzo's and is shorter when stowed because of the four leg configuration as opposed to the three leg setup. I haven't taken it out on a hike yet but I'm sure I'll enjoy the lighter weight.
Again, very solid in any position I have put it in. The heaviest load I have tried so far is a Nikon D810 with a Nikon 80-200 f2.8d and an Arca Swiss B1 ball head.
I'm glad I now have a solid carbon fiber tripod for my hiking needs that doesn't weigh me down.

I like EVERYTHING about this tripod.......except its ability to carry out the primary function of a tripod; to hold the camera/lens rock steady. The overall fit and finish of the tripod is excellent, the height-to-weight-to-folded length trade-offs are all excellent, the padded carrying case is great and it accommodates both the tripod and a ball head, it has retractable spike feet as standard equipment (Gitzo Mountaineer does not) and the legs are remarkably sturdy and rigid, really more rigid than I expected.

However, where the whole picture (no pun intended) completely unravels is at the center column; it is unbelievably wobbly. We've all heard that the steadiest configuration for a tripod is with the center column fully down but with this pod, that's its loosest position. In this position with the column fully tightened, I can take the bottom end of the column between my thumb and forefinger and gently shake it back and forth nearly a 1/4 inch! Consequently, the top of the center column where the ball head would be mounted is also shaking back and forth like a bobble-head on a dash board. I tried taking off the shock absorbing rubber O-ring beneath the ball head mount so that the mount was in direct contact with the tripod and it is still wobbly. At full extension the column is just as wobbly. Oddly enough, the steadiest position I found was with the center column half-way extended.

I tested out the pod with the biggest camera/lens load that I have and the results confirmed my fears; the photos were soft. If you look through a very long lens while it is mounted on the camera and just lightly touch either the lens or camera, you can see the picture moving all over.

So, I returned this pod to B and H and ordered the Gitzo. I'll let you know how that turns out. Kudos to B and H for superb customer service; the return was a snap and they paid the return shipping, you just can't ask for more than that! Thanks! Note to Oben: fix your badly flawed center column and you've got a winner.

Great Tripod - Won't fit in a carry on bag

Comments about Oben CT-2491 Carbon Fiber Tripod:

Love this tripod's stability and weight. I've been running around NYC with it all weekend without any issues. It is sturdy, there is no shaking, etc. The only reason I gave it 4 instead of 5 stars is it won't fit in any standard airline carry on bag. It makes traveling with it just a little bit of a pain.

Comments about Oben CT-2491 Carbon Fiber Tripod:

There are a number of things to really like about this tripod. It's very compact and lightweight. It really COULD be a good tripod. But one of the the Non-Rotating Twist Lock Legs has failed, and a two legged tripod is useless. This is the second time in a month an Oben product has been a complete fail.

Comments about Oben CT-2491 Carbon Fiber Tripod:

I read all the reviews so I knew about the center column issue.
I though the issue had been fixed by Oben but no, the central column is still very wobbly.
I use the tripod to support a Wimberley gimbal and a large & heavy 400mm telephoto lens (6.3kg) so I do not need the central column.
The finish is nice but I think you should not use that tripod for more than 25lbs load.
The tripod is very light and the twist looks won't rust when use at the beach.
Overall a good tripod for the price but it does not equal my Manfrotto 057

Leg fell off on the third day I used it!

Comments about Oben CT-2491 Carbon Fiber Tripod:

What a terrible product. I bought this three weeks before leaving on a three-week birding trip. As I was hiking, with the tripod and the scope, the leg all of a sudden fell off. Because I was on a three week trip out of the country, I couldn't even try to return it until I got back. And now, B&H won't take it back because I'm outside of the 30 day return period. So I now I have a two-legged tripod -

Solid good tripod

Comments about Oben CT-2491 Carbon Fiber Tripod:

I’ve only had the opportunity to use this tripod for 2 consecutive days, used to take photos of birds of prey migration through southern Ontario (Canada)

At 6.1” I needed a tripod that reached eye level without extending the centre column, this was the one and for $300 how could you go wrong.

I had a gimbal head my Canon 70D and a rented Canon 300mm 2.8 lens mounted on this tripod.

That day there was a bit of wind and the tripod held it’s own, it was solid, didn’t move or vibrate.

Some of the comments mentioned that the centre column can’t be tighten enough and it wobbles a bit,

I have no issues with mine the centre column is nice and tight with no wobble issues at all.

On the bottom of the centre column there is a hook to hang stuff on the tripod to prevent shaking or moving, I took mine off, as the way it’s placed it sticks out a bit and most likely will scratch the tripod.

The one thing I found slightly annoying was the twist and turn to extend the legs, I found I needed t o turn at least half turn for the leg to extend and had to extend the leg manually.

Being used to my aluminum tripod where I had the flick lock and the leg extended by itself due to weight, I found that a bit annoying.

I’m going to give it a 4 star only because of the twist in turn leg release is not as efficient as it should, otherwise I could’ve not been happier.

Would I buy it again even knowing the leg release is not the most efficient, I would.

Update on Oben tripod issues by Randy

    By Randy

    from Denver

Comments about Oben CT-2491 Carbon Fiber Tripod:

Oben sent a new set of shims to see if it would help with the center column wobble. Unfortunantly it did not. The design for the center column is not capable. I did manage a fix by removing the entire center column and replaced it with a flat base that Kirk had for a similar issue with Gitzo tripods. With an Oben leveling base and my Induro bhl3 ballhead I now have a rock solid system, albiet my ballhead and leveling base are heavy. Without this fix, I would look elsewhere. With the fix I would give my setup 4 stars. If Oben made a lighter version ballhead, leveling base and flat base in one single piece they would earn a fifth star. Keep tuned, they called me and asked how happy I was with my solution and hinted a fix is on the way.

Comments about Oben CT-2491 Carbon Fiber Tripod:

As this is the first Oben product I have purchased I can only evaluate this tripod.
I purchased this tripod for a photo safari to Costa Rica. I was pleased with its many features including the weight it would hold and the height it would attain. The height was important for photographing animals in the jungle canopy.
I was pleased with the light weight and that it fit neatly on the back of my photographic backpack.
I was walking through the airport when I discovered that this particular tripod was a lemon. I heard a clank and turned around to find the lower segment of one of the legs had fallen off. I had not even used the tripod as of yet. As some sort of friction lock was supposed to keep the leg on the tripod this was obviously defective or absent. This cut the height of the tripod by about a foot. OK, I was willing to bend over a little for the high canopy shots and while I had brought a spare camera I had not brought a spare tripod, especially since this one was brand new. The first day in the field the center segment of a different leg became frozen to where it would neither extend or contract. I was missing many photo opportunities due to these inconveniences with the tripod. I was saved by a friend having a spare tripod his wife was not using which he loaned to me.
Upon my return home I contacted B&H. Due to the length of time I was out of the country I was just outside the 30 day return policy. I commend B&H service in working with me for the return of this tripod.
I cannot judge the quality of other Oben tripods, and to be fair, this one may have been a fluke- but it was a complete piece of junk. I will invest a little more in a higher quality instrument.

Comments about Oben CT-2491 Carbon Fiber Tripod:

The center column in my tripod is either missing a part or the design has a critical problem. My tripod has a significant wobble and it appears to be the mechanism that clamps the center column to the tripod plate. I hope it is missing a key part or it is severely under designed.i sent an email and left message with Oben support. once I know how they respond I will update or post again.

Bought this tripod as a kit with the head and was excited to get it but was not at all happy. The tripod is stiff and difficult to close, some of the leg sections stick and have to be nearly forced to close. Compared to my Benro this is a waste of money. What I did like is that it is tall enough for my purposes on uneven ground.

B&H took it back without any trouble (I love you guys :) ) and I wrote to Benro telling them what I was looking for and they recommended their Induro line. I bought one from Induro and couldn't be happier.

Comments about Oben CT-2491 Carbon Fiber Tripod:

This Oben model is quite sturdy, and a good value especially if you get it on sale. It does seem to have some odd design flaws, however. The center column clamp does not grip the post securely because the diameter of the post is slightly larger than the top fitting. This allows it to wobble slightly. If you detach the center column and clamp the fitting alone, the problem is solved, but of course you lose that vertical adjustment. The bigger problem is that the lower fitting on the center post has a sharp edge that damages the carbon legs when they are folded. There is a rubber o-ring just below the sharp edge and if it was a bit larger in diameter, it would prevent this damage from occurring. As is, however, it serves no purpose whatsoever that I can see. A very confounding design.

Comments about Oben CT-2491 Carbon Fiber Tripod:

I use this 'pod with my Canon 5d3 and various lenses ranging from the 16-35 to a 70-200. What I like aobut it is it's height--with the head--it's actually a bit too tall for me (at 6' 1-ish"), but for me, I'd rather have it be too tall than too short. I also love it's weight.

I also love the fact that it comes in a very nice case.

What I'm less thrilled about is the twist lock legs. OTOH, the 'pod is .6 lbs. LIGHTER than the same unit with flip locks and since I plan to travel with it, over time that will make a difference. I can get used to the slight inconvenience of the twist locks. My first unit had a twist lock that didn't function correctly and I returned it. The 2nd unit is fine.

Oben seems to make decent gear. Not as expensive as some, nor as cheap as others. This one will hold way more than I'll ever put on it, so it fits my bill.

This tripod is rock solid and can shoot from almost any angle imaginable and super light.

The 39lb capacity is probably over-kill, but experience with cheaper aluminum tripods made me want something more solid.
